Dear Friends of the Paulding Exempted Vil-lage Schools,We are currently in the middle of the 3 rd 9weeks already here at PEVS, and the 2015-2016 year is quickly coming to the end so
plans are already starting for next year. Wehave our calendar for the 2016-2017 schoolyear under the “Calendar” tab on our web-site, www.pauldingschools.org . Be sure tocheck out the dates for school next year and
plan ahead! The winter activities are comingto a close and we see some of the spring ac-tivities getting ready to begin. Our SpringBreak is scheduled for March 24 to March29, 2016 . The next regular BOE meeting isscheduled for Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at7:00 PM in the Administration BuildingConference Room. All Board meetings areopen to the public, and community residentsare invited to attend. As far as calamity days for this school year,we have missed 15.5 hours of instruction, which includes hours missed for delays aswell as full cancellations. Make up days will
be needed after missing 47.5 hours ofinstruction, therefore we have no makeupdays at this time. You may keep track of ourcalamity hours by looking under the “ParentLinks” tab on our website. The determiningfactor for delaying or cancelling school isalways the safety of our students. The Hon-eywell Instant Alert System has been veryhelpful for keeping families informed ofdelays, cancellations, and event changes. Please keep your contact information up todate in the system. The district continues to upgrade technologyfor our staff and students. Oakwood andPaulding Elementary are the latest buildingsto get some new laptops. The goal is for ac-cess to technology for all students Pre-K to12. The High School and Middle School arecurrently in the second year of having a 1 to1 for students who are enrolled in grades 7-12. Our buildings continue to provide oppor-tunities for our students to succeed. The Paulding Middle School will be hosting
a Career Day on March 23. There will beguest speakers coming in to speak to our 8thgraders about their career and the preparationit took to get there. The 2015- 2016 school year con nues to moveforward in a smooth manner. Unlike the past twoschool years, when Mother Nature and Jack Frostwreaked havoc on our part of the world, we havebeen fortunate to have many fewer disrup onsto our regular schedule so far this year. As of thiswri ng, we have missed just 27 hours of instruc-
on due to weather, giving ourselves a fairamount of cushion heading into the nal threemonths of school. We’ll con nue to keep our
ngers crossed as spring is right around thecorner. However, many weeks s ll exist for possi-ble winter weather, so we encourage everyone tocon nue exercising cau on when traveling.
Speaking of days and hours of instruc on, theWayne Trace Board of Educa on has recentlyapproved the school calendar for the 2016 -2017school year. Important dates to note include the
rst day for students – Wednesday, August 24;Christmas break – December 22 -January 2; springbreak – April 13 -17; and gradua on – May 28. Acomplete calendar is available to the public onour school web -site.
Turning to academic ma ers, this year’s state -mandated tests are quietly creeping up on us.Before long, we will be in the tes ng season. Toincrease our students’ chances for success, ourteachers con nue to introduce, develop, andassess their students on the academic contentstandards as outlined by the Ohio Department of
Educa on. Two of our primary goals for this yearare to have a district -wide Performance Indexscore over 100 points and to have a vast improve-ment on our value -added measurement. Parentscan help make these goals a reality by con nuingto support our teachers with their children’sschoolwork and by encouraging their children toput forth their best e ort on these tests.Although no one is excited to take tests, theseassessments are a barometer that allows us todetermine if our students are making a year’sgrowth in the core academic subjects. Withoutaccurate data, we will not know in what areas weneed to improve. Remember, success at school isa team e ort between home and school. Every-one plays a vital part in the educa on of our stu-dents.
Time s ll exists for you to nominate a formersta member for the Wayne Trace Sta Hall ofFame Class of 2016. If you wish to obtain a nomi-na on form, contact Ann Olwin in the centralo ce, and she will assist you. The Hall of Fameevent has become very popular in the commu -
nity, and you can play a vital role by nomina ngone of more worthy former sta members. We would like to thank everyone who a ended
the annual Wayne Trace FFA pancake andsausage breakfast on February 20. Your supportis greatly appreciated, as proceeds from thisevent bene t the many agricultural programso ered at the high school. Special thanks go outto Miss Lori Heiby and her students for all thework they put in to make this year’s event anoth-er successful one.
Congratula ons go out to several of our varsityathle c squads. Our boys’ basketball teamcaptured its twenty -seventh conference tle thisyear, while our wrestling and girls’ basketballteams each nished as conference runners -up.With the OHSAA tournament seasons now underway, we wish our athletes the best of luck as theypursue success down the tournament trail.
Finally, please be aware of some 2015 -2016school calendar reminders: 1.) School will operateon a two -hour delay, district -wide, on Friday,
March 11 for the purpose of a teacher in -service.Buses will run two hours late that day. 2.) Schoolwill not be in session for students from March 24 -April 1 due to a full -day teacher in -service (March24), Good Friday (March 25), and spring break(March 28 -April 1). Also, please be reminded thatseveral Paulding County vo ng precincts will beusing the JH/HS building on March 15. School willgo as usual that day with several precau ons inplace to assure a safe learning and vo ng envi-ronment for everyone.
As always, if you have ques ons or concernsabout your child’s educa onal experience atWayne Trace, feel free to contact your buildingprincipal or superintendent. Go Raiders!

Sports Physicals for $20
The month of March is a very busy time period for our students and staff. Wintersports are winding down and students partic-ipating in spring sports are gearing up for anew season. A sizeable number of our stu-dents have also been busy in preparation forthe MS/HS musical “The Little Mermaid.”Performances will take place March 11 & 12at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 13 at 2:00 p.m. From an academic standpoint, the thirdnine-week grading period ends Friday,March 11. Likewise, our seniors are busy planning for their future by finalizing plansfor college, work, or the military as they begin the last quarter of their high schoolcareer. During the last quarter of the schoolyear, students in grades 3-11 will also en-gage in state assessments. Additional infor-mation regarding the state assessments isavailable on the Ohio Department of Educa-tion website: http://education.ohio.gov/.
A couple of building improvement projectswill get underway during the next fewmonths. Near the end of March, we will begin to replace the lights in the two gymna-siums with energy efficient LED lighting. The new lights will reduce our energy cost, provide a brighter environment, and provideflexibility with dimmer control settings. The other project involves improvements toour HVAC system. The improvements tothe system will begin in late March and car-ry through to early August. The improve-ments will also reduce our energy cost andimprove the comfort level in our educationalenvironments.
Traffic flow and volume levels with the drop-off and pick-up of students around the largecircle drive vary from day to day. Duringdays of high traffic volume, it is imperativethat we remind ourselves that our concern isthe safety of our children….not how quicklywe can get our children picked up ordropped off. There are some things in lifethat require our patience and unselfish atti-
tude, and this is one of them. Please contin-ue to follow the directions of the school staffsupervising the circle drive and pull aheadas far as possible prior to letting your childout of the vehicle or picking up your child.Using the entire circle drive will allow us tounload and load children more efficiently. If possible, have your child get in and out ofthe car on the sidewalk side. If you do notuse the circle drive, please park your car in a parking space and come up the sidewalkwith your child in the morning or to meetthem at the sidewalk in the afternoon. The police department has asked us to reminddrivers that they cannot stop along the roadon Harrmann Road. If that situation devel-ops, you may pull into the parking lot bor-
dering Harrmann Road and complete yourdrop-off or pick-up. Additionally, elemen-tary students should not walk through the parking lot by themselves to get in a waitingcar. Thank you for assisting with providinga safe school environment.

LUNCH/BREAKFAST PROGRAMIf you have had a change in your family’sincome and you feel that you may now qual-ify for our Lunch/Breakfast program, pleasefeel free to pick up an application in any ofour offices. The applications are availableall year.

Students must pass all five parts (reading, writing, mathe-matics, science, and social studies) to beeligible to graduate. Attendance plays amajor role in academic performance; it isvital the students are present this week.
Assessments —During the 2015-2016school year, the Ohio Department of Educa-tion will develop new tests in mathematicsand English Language Arts with the assis-tance of Ohio educators. To build these newtests, the department will use its existingcontract with the American Institutes forResearch (AIR), a well-known test vendor.AIR will provide Ohio’s English, math, sci-ence, and social studies tests. The followingwill indicate which grades and subjects will be assessed:Grades 6-8 English Language Arts
and MathematicsGrade 6 Social StudiesGrade 8 ScienceHigh School: Class of 2018 and beyond
English Language Arts I & IIAlgebra I & GeometryBiologyAm. History & Am. Government
Antwerp will begin its testing sessions onMonday, April 11, and will test for 15 con-secutive days. The testing sessions will beadministered online, which will be brokenup into two 90-minute segments. Again, itis vital that students are in attendance fortheir assessment. The Ohio Department ofEducation will use the assessment results todetermine if the school is providing a high-quality education for all students.

AP Exams— Students taking the AP examscan submit final payment of $77 per exam toMrs. Rogge anytime during the month ofMarch. Visit the school website for the2016 AP exam administration schedule.
Red Flags— Mrs. Jama Cline (school nurse)and Mrs. Rogge will be presenting the RedFlags Program to seventh graders during themonth of March. This program explainsmental illness. Your seventh grader will bring home more information in the comingweeks, or visit www.RedFlags.org for moreinformation.
As we begin the month of March, we lookforward to hopefully some warmer weatherand less interruptions to our students’ learn-ing opportunities. We encourage you tocheck the weather and dress your childrenaccordingly, as weather can change veryquickly throughout the course of the day.As long as it is not raining outside, the play-ground is not icy or flooded, and the windchill is above 10 degrees, our students will be going outside for recess.
Preschool for 2016-2017— Parents who areinterested in having their child attend pre-school for the first time at Antwerp mustattend a child screening. The next screeningis scheduled for March 11, from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church inPaulding. Please call 1-877-473-8166 toschedule your appointment. Children must be 3 or 4 years of age by August 1, 2016 to be eligible for the Antwerp Preschool.
In March— We have many presentationsscheduled for the month of March. Hopeful-ly these presentations give our students andteachers a much needed break in the monot-ony of winter. On March 2, we are pleasedto welcome the Columbus Children’s Thea-tre, who will present Rumpelstiltskin. This presentation is being co-sponsored by thePaulding Area Support Society (PASS).Then, on March 8, we welcome Kerry Ka- zaam, Safety Man. This presentation com- bines magic and common sense safety tipsfor students. Thank you to the PauldingCounty D.A.R.E. program for sponsoringthis event. A third event is being sponsored by the 21st Century Program here at theschool. We look forward to an engagingscience presentation on March 11. Onceagain, thanks to the three sponsors for these programs.
Testing— Over the last couple of years,Ohio’s testing program has transitioned toonline tests that are more rigorous and in-
depth than the previous Ohio “AchievementAssessments (OAA).” There are a couple ofchanges for this year to the testing. Onechange is that the American Institute of Re-search (AIR) will be the company that is the“testing engine” for all of the testing. An-other change is that testing this year willonly consist of one test that is broken intotwo separate sections for grades 3-5 math, grades 4-5 ELA, grade 4 social studies, andgrade 5 science. The only exception to thisschedule is for 3rd grade English LanguageArts, which is tested in the fall and willagain test in the spring at the same time asthe other grades and subjects. These testsare broken into different sections so that thestudents are not testing for extended periods
of time in one day. Our teachers and staffhave done an excellent job of helping to prepare our students to be successful onthese tests. We plan to begin this testing theweek of April 11, so we ask that you make aconcerted effort to have your students toschool on time during this testing session.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION2016-2017 kindergarten screening and regis-tration will be held Wed., March 30, andThurs., March 31, here at the school. If yourchild will be five years old before August 1,2016, please call the elementary office atext. 2200 to schedule your appointment.
