Reception: The Reception Class enjoyed a great visit from the fire fighters last week. They explored the fire engine and used the huge hoses in the playground. We had a most enjoyable time learning all about Shrove Tuesday and of course eating pancakes! Ms Stoner

Year 1:What a wonderful week. We have been continuing with traditional stories and followed this through into our Science lesson. Your child may have mentioned how they had to work as a team to build a house made out of different materials: either straw, bricks (lego!) or sticks that could withstand the wolf (my hairdryer!). Great fun was had by all and a huge amount of discussion was generated about the properties of the different materials. The class worked superbly together in their groups and took great pride in their finished house. We have worked ‘practically’

this week in Numeracy, measuring objects in the classroom using non-standard units. The children have been comparing and estimating lengths using cubes. In RE, our topic of Special People continues and we learned all about the Queen, each designing a crown for her. In Art, we have begun our own versions of Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ using mixed materials, and in History we wrote our own Van Gogh fact-files.Mrs Kent and Mrs Moore

Year 2:This week, the children in Year Two focussed on money. We began by adding up coins, and two different amounts, and then moved onto giving change. We set up a pretend toyshop in the classroom and took turns in being the cashier.

In Literacy, we looked at newspapers. We learnt about headlines and then used our knowledge about the Great Fire of London to write our own newspaper front page. We had to use speech marks and imagine that we were in Pudding Lane when the fire happened.

In RE, we continued to learn about Lent and celebrated Shrove Tuesday in class by making pancakes!

For Science, we looked at materials and how they can be changed. Firstly, we looked at different materials that could be squashed, bent, twisted or stretched and then we made predictions about what would happen to different materials when they are heated in an oven. Next week we will look at reversible and irreversible changes by heating and cooling different materials.

For Geography, we continued to look at Iceland with a focus this week on the weather. We talked about the different things we would need to pack if we went on holiday there, writing lists and drawing pictures of the items we would pack.Ms Rosen

Year 3:Year 3 were real stars this week when they performed an assembly for the whole school. The theme was about becoming an anti-bully. They were able to act out a story to show what can happen when somebody is bullied at school and how everybody can be an anti-bully and stop bullying when they see it. A really important message - well done, Year 3!

In Maths this week we have been looking at addition and subtraction and started to look at using the column method. Everyone is excited about using this new method and worked really hard to practise this new skill.

In Science, we have looked at the work of Marie Curie and found out about the amazing things that she did. Some of us even had a go at creating a picture of an x-ray.Ms Hayward and Mrs Watkins

Year 4:What a brilliant day we had at Hever Castle. The rain stopped soon after we arrived and the sun came out. We were greeted at the portcullis by a friend of Anne Boleyn’s that showed us around the castle and told us all about its history. We were able to dress up for our time travelling and we learnt lots of new information about the Tudors, including that they sat on three legged chairs. Then all the children tried to get lost in the hedge maze but were able to find their way out. After lunch, we were able to visit the miniature house exhibition and we tried our hand at writing with quills. The children loved this, but it was rather messy and we were all glad that we don’t have to use them at school! Ms. HaywardHead of History

In addition to our fantastic trip, Year 4 have been involved in lots of other great learning this week. We finished our topic about inspirational people in R.E. and Anne Frank was a popular figure with the class. In French, we have been learning vocabulary to describe the instruments we play and the type of music we like, whilst in Speech and Drama, we have been working on our improvisation skills. Our English work has focussed on exploring the features of explanation texts this week. We studied a humorous explanation for how dragons became extinct, learned the text off by heart through the creation of text maps and performed it aloud. This means that we all have a memorised

model of an explanation text to draw on when we start our own independent written work next week. Mrs Gann and Mrs Ash

Year 5:Another busy week! Year 5 enjoyed a trip to Hove Museum with Ms Hayward to attend a Victorian artefact handling session. All the objects were originals from the era and some had our Year 5s really puzzled. The children had to really think about the questions they needed to ask in order to find out about the mystery objects: a critical skill in History! The objects included mousetraps, irons, bird catchers and butter paddles. This led to lots of questions about how people lived during this time and the children gained a lot of knowledge about this era. Well done, Year 5 - you were brilliant detectives! The Year 5 School Council representatives attended the School Council meeting on behalf of Year 5. They made valuable contributions to the discussions which focused on the pupils’ ideas for improving our school. It’s great for our pupils to experience the power of democracy and to have a greater involvement in the school community. The two Year 5 pupils were excellent ambassadors.

In Mathematics, Year 5 pupils were excited to learn a new method for short division, nicknamed the ‘Bus Stop’ method. When remembering the steps correctly, it proved to be a really quick and easy way of dividing. To take their learning to the next step, the Year 5 pupils learnt to convert any remainder from the division into a fraction and even noticed where some fractions could be simplified. They have also begun to multiply fractions by whole numbers. Fantastic work!Ms Hayward, Mrs Croucher and Mrs Gann

Year 6:It was an important week for many of our Year 6 pupils; the long awaited news of state school places was released and most pupils in the class now finally know which school they will be heading off to next year. This milestone highlights how little time we have left together at Deepdene, so it’s definitely time for us as a class to make every moment count! We certainly have lots of fun in store for the next few months.

Nina led a fantastic School Council meeting, giving pupils across the school the opportunity to discuss the school issues that are close to their hearts. She did a wonderful job and was joined by the Year 6 council representatives, Blossom and Seth, as well as Louie who attended in order to propose plans for a water fountain and some fundraisers. What a pro-active bunch! Well done to all the Year 6’s who were involved in this very successful meeting.

In Mathematics this week, Year 6 were tackling Algebra. Although it is one of Mrs Gann’s favourite topics in Maths, it seemed a little scary to look at in the beginning. However, the pupils were all soon writing and simplifying basic algebraic expressions, working out the value of a letter in an equation, finding all possibilities of numbers that would satisfy a given equation and calculating the nth term in a sequence. Good work, everyone!Mrs Croucher and Mrs Gann

The Peacock Poetry Prize 2017- In association with the Brighton FestivalWe are excited to invite all our budding poets to take part in this year’s Peacock Poetry Prize which runs as part of the Brighton Festival. Pupils are invited to submit a poem on Kate Tempest’s chosen theme of ‘Everday Epic’. In other words, to write about something or someone from every day life that is special in some way.

The prize category age groups for primary aged children are

8-10 years and 11-13 years and all pupils attending schools in Brighton and Hove are eligible to enter. Our pupils can submit up to three poems with a maximum length of 20 lines per poem and we’d love to enter the work of as many Deepdene pupils as possible! Year 5 and 6 pupils have already written theirs – well done, everyone. Please encourage your child to see Head of English, Mrs Croucher, if they would like any help or support.

Pupils wishing to enter should submit their poems to Mrs Croucher by Wednesday 29th March. Good luck, Deepdene poets!

As Year 4 were out on a school trip this week, Year 5 competed amongst themselves for the top times table time, score and improvement on the 77 question grid.

The person with the fastest time this week was Luca with a speedy 2 minutes and 52 seconds.

Ethan bagged the most improved time, with an improvement of 25 seconds. Great!

Eliana, Jack, Luca and Ethan all scored full marks and everyone finished the entire grid in under five minutes. Impressive!
