As the Captain of the South African Test Cricket team was in the news this week, the International toast was to the Rotary club of Hatfield, Pretoria, where he comes from. It has 21 members and meets at the Sheraton. As President Noel was absent, Vice President Kevin Safe then took the Chair. He welcomed Rotarians and our guest, Paul Quigley, from the Uniting Church. There were 9 apologies. ANNOUNCEMENTS. Could we please have some children’s books donated, to fill out “Little Book Box”? Leo Cummins had a run-in with a sheep, and now had a broken ankle. He is getting along ok. His transport is a wheelchair and he is being spoilt by Liz. The District NZ Earthquake Appeal is on now, so please donate if you can. Could you please return the Raffle books/stubs and unsold tickets, as soon as you can? Could you also return the questionnaire to Noel next Monday.

REPORTS:EventsandFundraising,LesSeiffert:WehavethefirstbbqthisSundayat1pm.HelpershavegiventheirnamestoLes.ThesecondbbqisforCarolsbyCandelightonDecember9th,at6pmintheGardens.SecretaryBobPenny:TheCharitableTrustistobereviewed.HarnessRacing,WillisDuncan:ThankyoutoKevinSafe,forhelpingoutatthelastmeeting.ThenextmeetingisDecember15th.GUESTSPEAKER,PAULQUIGLEY,VOLUNTEER,UNITINGCHURCH.PaulinitiallyworkedatthePVI,andin2005hetookanearlypensionandjoinedthevolunteersoftheUnitingChurch’sCSI.(ChurchofSouthIndia,whichstartedin1947)Thevolunteersarefromvariouschurches,andtheyhelptheneedypeopleintheDioceseofMadras,mainlyChennai,whichhasapopulationofaround12million.Forthelast5years,PaulhasbeenworkinginNagari,about40kmsfromChennai.HehasbeenteachingEnglishtochildren,andhelpingthesechildrenwithgrowingvegetablesandfruit,notonlytoeat,buttosellatthemarkets.Therearehostelsforboys,andgirls,primaryandsecondaryschools,andschoolsfordeafanddisabledchildren.Alotofthesechildren’sparentshaveleprosy,soareoutcastsandtreatedbadly.Sometimesthecastesystempreventsthechildrenfromprogressingwiththeirschooling,sotheygotolowertypeschoolsinstead.Thechildrenareveryenthusiasticabouttheirgardens.PaulteachesEnglishtwicedaily,7-8amand7-8pmin4villageswheretheeducationisreallypoor.Hetutorsoverthesummerperiodinordertogivethechildrenagoodstartatsecondaryschool.Thereareabout70-80childrenineachclass.TheMissionariesalsoprovidemealsfortheelderlypeopleandthepeoplewhoaredestitute.InSholinghur,theMissionariesboughtlandforschools,andalittlepartofthiswaskeptforgrowingvegetables,mangoesandrice.Someofthelandwasalsousedtobuildachurchon.Therearelotsoflittlechurchesinoutlyingvillages,wheretherearemanygroupsofwomenandchildrenwhoproducegoodsformarket.Thegirls’hostelsaretheonlyonestohaveagoodsurplusofvegetablestosell.Thepeopleofthesevillageslovetodance.Theyareveryself-reliant,learningtocuthair,cook,andmendclothes.AtChristmastime,choristersvisitabout30homespernighttosingcarols.Theyaregivenfoodandtreats,andsometimestheyarestillsingingat3am.Thechildreninthehostelsstarttheirdayat5.30amandgountil10.30pm.Theirchoresarenotonlystudy,buthouseholdworkaswell.Averyinterestingtalk,aboutaveryinterestingplace.ThankyouPaul.
