As fall approaches students, including the children of many MAP
recipients, begin to think about
returning to school. School has the ability provide homeless
children with a much-needed sense of
stability in their otherwise chaotic lives. It also provides
them with the close relationships they may not
have at home and self-confidence through their successes. Upon
completion it is the single most
important step they can take to bring themselves out of poverty.
However, if these children are not
provided the simple tools necessary to be an active participant
in their education it is a very likely
possibility that school will become yet another worrisome burden
to add to their list, including housing
and hunger. In MA 75% of the 50,000 youth facing homeless drop
out of school.
In an effort to assist these children in gaining the education
necessary to succeed academically MAP is
holding our 6th Annual School Supply Drive. Last year we were
able to provide 73 students with
backpacks and school supplies. This year we aim to increase that
number to 100. Please consider
contributing to our 2013 School Supply Drive; donations may be
dropped off at MAP during our hours of
operation, Tuesday & Thursday 9am-3pm or on Sundays if you
are member of Cambridge Friends
Meeting through Tuesday August 27th. If necessary, other times
may be arranged for drop off.
