Together Our Vision” Capital Campaign Update as of 5/18/18: Total Pledged: $890,078 Total Paid: $661,733.85

Catholic Social Teaching Corner At the heart of this great celebration is the reality of Christ’s total gift of himself to us! Christ not only gave his life on the cross for our salvation, but continues to give himself completely in the Eucharist. This feast is also a reminder that through Christ we are intimately connected to one another as members of his Body. If Christ is willing to give himself to all of us, saints and sinners, what sacri ice for others are we willing to make? Are we willing to give of ourselves for those in need: the poor, the imprisoned, the unborn, the undocumented immigrant, the refugee, the homeless stranger?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The origins of today’s solemnity lie in thirteenth-century Bel-gium. In those days, people seldom received Holy Communion, and never from the chalice. A nun in a troubled convent, Juliana of Li-ege, devoted her life to stirring up love for the Eucharist, lobbying for a feast day to honor the Blessed Sacrament with Masses and processions.

Juliana may have been inspired by the Ascension Day proces-sions in nearby Bruges. Crusaders brought a treasure home to Bruges from Constantinople in 1204: a reliquary said to contain a cloth from Joseph of Arimathea with which he had helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial. The stain on the cloth was said to be the holy blood itself, and so the people of Bruges built a great basil-ica to house the relic. Bruges became a great center of pilgrimage because of this treasure, and the procession of the Holy Blood is still one of the greatest festivals in Belgium today. The bishop car-ries the relic through the narrow streets, and the people wear me-dieval costumes and act out scenes from the Bible. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
