Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

THE LORD, OUR INHERITANCE As wise men and women of faith have always done, when today’s authors needed to look forward in faith, they also looked back. We look back at their writings today for our

hope, and like them, we can also look at the psalter—Israel’s prayer book—for help. Today’s psalm text reminds us that with the Lord at our side, nothing can truly shake us. We know that God will not abandon us, and that if we walk with the Lord true life will be ours. We are at that time in our Church year when we hear much about the coming

of Christ in glory as we get ready to re-enter Advent, our season of preparation for his return. Most likely we are not undergoing the extremes of persecution or trials that the first audiences of today’s readings were; but we can, through a deep praying of the psalms and a fervent hearing of their words, be reminded to keep our lives and our faith focused only on God, the one source of our being and our life. **********************************************

PRAYER Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, establish and confirm us in Your truth by Your Holy Spirit. Reveal to us what we do not know; perfect in us what is lacking; strengthen us in what we know; and keep us faultless in Your service; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever (Daniel 12:1-3). Psalm — You are my inheritance, O Lord! (Psalm 16). Second Reading — Where there is forgiveness, there is no longer offering for sin (Hebrews 10:11-14, 18). Gospel — Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away (Mark 13:24-32). All rights reserved.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK . Monday: Rv 1:1-4; 2:1-5; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 18:35-43 Tuesday: Rv 3:1-6, 14-22; Ps 15:2-5; Lk 19:1-10 Wednesday: Rv 4:1-11; Ps 150:1b-6; Lk 19:11-28 Thursday: Rv 5:1-10; Ps 149:1b-6a, 9b; Lk 19:41-44 Thanksgiving Day—Suggested: Sir 50:22-24; 1 Cor 1:3-9; Lk 17:11-19 Friday: Rv 10:8-11; Ps 119:14, 24, 72, 103, 111, 131; Lk 19:45-48 Saturday: Rv 11:4-12; Ps 144:1b, 2, 9-10; Lk 20:27-40 Sunday: Dn 7:13-14; Ps 93:1-2, 5; Rv 1:5-8; Jn 18:33b-37 All rights reserved.

ENCOURAGEMENT This Sunday’s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus’ teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel’s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ’s love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

GOOD THINGS IN THREES On this Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, we get a three-fold consolation from the scriptures. All Three readings today were written in times of duress or persecution, and all three offer their original readers and us today were written in times of duress or persecution, and all three offer their original readers and us today the message of hope. Daniel’s audience was in desperate need of assurance that God would be their source of salvation, for Israel was undergoing one of its most violent periods of per-secution at the hands of the Greeks, a time that produced the Maccabean revolt and the familiar Jewish festival of Hanukkah. The author of Hebrews was writing to a group of people un-sure about leaving behind the faith and rituals that they had been told for generations would be their source of forgiveness. In return, they received the strong message that they would be able to find everything in Jesus Christ. Mark’s readers were under Roman persecution, rekindling the fear and confusion that they felt immediately following the death of Je-sus. These three authors facing tough times were still able to provide optimistic messages.

St. Albert The Great Diocesan News

Centennial News

Bishop O’Donnell—Eight Years on November 8, 2018-On November 8, 1994, Bishop Edward O’Donnell was appointed the fifth Bishop of the Diocese of Lafayette. O’Donnell had been serving for over 10 years as an Auxiliary Bishop in his native Archdiocese of St. Louis, Missouri. His appointment filled the vacant seat that was a result of Bishop Flynn’s move to the Archdiocese of Minneapolis-St. Paul in February 1994. Bishop O’Donnell was installed December 16, 1994 and served until his resignation was accepted on the anniver-sary of his appointment: November 8, 2002. On that date, his successor, Bishop Michael Jarrell, was announced as the sixth Bishop of Lafayette.

Centennial News

A Cardinal Visits Lafayette—As part of the celebration of the 80th Anniversary of the Diocese of Lafayette, Bishop Edward O’Donnell invited Cardinal Pio Laghi to visit the Diocese of Lafayette. Cardinal Laghi was serving in the Vatican as the Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education. In his six day tour of the Diocese in November of 1998, Cardinal Laghi visited many schools and was greeted by thousands. In St. Martinville, he blessed the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial, noting the “perseverance of these men and women that have brought us this far by faith.”

Centennial Mass-All are invited– the closing Mass for the Centennial Year of our Diocese will be December 12th at the Cajundome Convention Center at 6pm. Our Diocese and the wonderful people of our diocese and how God has poured forth His Love and guidance upon us in these last 100 Years will be the focus—A Century of Love. Along with the Mass, there will be a Historical Display before and after the Mass as well as a presentation of the many people and cultures of our Dio-cese. The doors will open at 4:30 because there will be much to be a part of and see. All Catholics throughout our whole Diocese are invited and encouraged to attend. Please mark your calendars.

Albert the Great was a 13th-century German Dominican who decisively influenced the Church's stance toward Aristotelian philosophy brought to Europe by the spread of Islam.

Students of philosophy know him as the master of Thomas Aquinas. Albert’s attempt to understand Aristotle’s writings established the climate in which Thomas Aquinas developed his synthesis of Greek wisdom and Christian theology. But Albert deserves recognition on his own merits as a curious, honest and diligent scholar.

He was the eldest son of a powerful and wealthy German lord of military rank. He was educated in the liberal arts. Despite fierce family opposition, he entered the Dominican novitiate.

His boundless interests prompted him to write a compendium of all knowledge: natural science, logic, rhetoric, mathematics, astronomy, ethics, economics, politics and metaphysics. His explanation of learning took 20 years to complete. "Our intention," he said, "is to make all the aforesaid parts of knowledge intelligible to the Latins."

He achieved his goal while serving as an educator at Paris and Cologne, as Dominican provincial, and even as bishop of Regensburg for a short time. He defended the mendicant orders and preached the Crusade in Germany and Bohemia.

Albert, a Doctor of the Church, is the patron of scientists and philosophers.

"There are some who desire knowledge merely for its own sake; and that is shameful curiosity. And there are others who desire to know, in order that they may themselves be known; and that is vanity, disgraceful too. Others again desire knowledge in order to acquire money or preferment by it; that too is a discreditable quest. But there are also some who desire knowledge, that they may build up the souls of others with it; and that is charity. Others, again, desire it that they may themselves be built up thereby; and that is prudence. Of all these types, only the last two put knowledge to the right use" (St. Bernard, Sermon on the Canticle of Canticles).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. Our tradition holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the “dwelling place of the Holy Spirit,” and has a destiny of life with God in glory. The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral liturgy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one’s “birthday to life,” the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Justice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Christians were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference. —Rev. Pray for the Sick

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the Sick, we turn to You in this time of illness. O dearest Com-forter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with Your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in Your hands. We place our sick under Your care and humbly ask that You restore Your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowl-edge Your Holy Will and know that whatsoever You do, You do for the love of us. Amen. *****************************************

O MY DIVINE SAVIOR, Transform me into yourself.

May my hands be the hands of Jesus. Grant that every faculty of my body

May serve only to glorify you. Above all, transform my soul and all its powers

So that my memory, will and affection May be the memory, will and affections of Jesus.

I pray you to destroy in me All that is not of you. Grant that I may live

But in you, by you and for you, So that I may truly say with St. Paul,

‘I live—now not I— But Christ lives in me.’

Amen.

************************************************

A THANKSGIVING PRAYER

As we join hearts and hands, giving thanks for our abundance,

we ask God to bless those whose tables will be empty today,

especially all those children who are hungry and afraid.

May they know that we

walk with them and that they are never really alone.

We are brothers and sisters, thankful that we are

one with our Creator, one with our world.

Amen.
