Key Bible Verse: 1 Timothy 4:12

Life ApplicationI can live out my obedience to God.

Level of Biblical Learning (Self)God wants me to live every day in ways that please Him.

If you were to choose to be a prophet, whom would you choose? Maybe Jeremiah, Isaiah, or Daniel? How would you like to be known as the "wrong-way prophet" like Jonah? Though Jonah might have taken the wrong way, he finally followed God's instructions. •Read Jonah 1–2. Have you ever considered

how you could be a stumbling block to God's work? Jonah knew full well that because he was running from God, he was bringing disaster on his shipmates. It was this self-awareness that eventually got Jonah thrown off the ship and into the belly of a fish. Notice in 1:17 that the writer states "...the Lord provided a great fish..." In most cases, a great fish does not seem to be a provision, but a death sentence. How does God provide for you?

•Read Jonah 3–4. In anger, Jonah pouted and wallowed in self-pity. However, Jonah obeyed and went to Nineveh. When the people heard Jonah's message, they repented and God did not bring destruction. How many times do we have that same pity for ourselves?

•Notice how prayer was the underlying theme to Jonah's life. Prayer brought Jonah off the boat and into the fish, from the fish onto dry land, and eventually saved the people of Nineveh from destruction. In each situation, the prayers were ineffective without obedience to God. Pray the children you teach understand and act out true obedience.

JonahBased on Jonah

Jonah was a prophet of God. It was his task to deliver God's words to the people [point to "Card 1"]. One day God told Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh (NIN uh vuh) and preach against the people's great wickedness. Jonah disobeyed God and tried to run away [point to "Card 2"]. Jonah purchased a ticket and boarded a ship sailing in the opposite direction from Nineveh.

While Jonah was on the ship, a violent storm tossed the ship [point to "Card 3"]. The sailors were frightened and prayed to their gods. Jonah was sleeping [point to "Card 4"] below deck. The captain woke him and told him to pray as well. Jonah told the men the storm [point to "Card 3"] was his fault because he had disobeyed God. Jonah told the men they must throw him into the sea in order to stop the storm [point to "Card 3"]. Though the sailors did not want to do this, they

realized they had no choice [point to "Card 5"]. After the sailors threw Jonah overboard, the sea grew calm [point to "Card 6"].

God sent a big fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah was inside the fish for three days and nights [point to "Card 7"]. While in the belly of the fish, Jonah prayed a prayer of thanksgiving and commitment. God commanded the fish to spit Jonah onto dry land [point to "Card 8"].

Jonah finally obeyed God and went to Nineveh. Jonah told the people that unless they repented, God would destroy their city. When the people heard this, they were sad and asked God for forgiveness [point to "Card 9"]. When God saw the people were truly sorry and asked Him to forgive their sins, He forgave them and did not destroy their city.

ConsequenceBenjamin saved his money to buy a new bicycle. In just two more weeks, if he saved his allowance, he would have enough money to finally buy the bike. On Sunday, Benjamin heard a speaker talking about giving money to buy Bibles. The speaker said that for only a few dollars, a Bible could be bought and given to someone who did not own one. Benjamin thought about what the man said. Benjamin decided he could wait a few weeks longer for a new bike. Benjamin took his allowance out of his pocket and placed it in the offering plate. What are the consequences of how Benjamin acted?
