From the Principal’s desk…
It’s hard to believe that we are near the end of
another term. This term has flown by!
Ungarie Central School hosted a very
successful Lachlan Access Program (LAP) Year
12 graduation evening on Tuesday. Students
from across the four schools came to celebrate
their graduation from LAP and receive awards
for their efforts over the year. I am proud to say
that 100% of our Ungarie students received
awards on the night, from Merit Awards
and/or First in Courses for Danielle, Emily,
Sean, David and Vanessa, to Distinguished
Achiever Awards for Vanessa and David.
Congratulations to you all!
Mrs Anne Noble did an amazing job
organising the catering for the event, with
many positive comments about the food.
Thank you to Mrs Noble, our Hospitality
students and Michelle Potter for cooking,
Jason and Nicky Lewis and Vanessa Williams
for helping on the night and to our Year 6/7/8
girls who assisted with the serving. Thank you
also to Mrs Michelle Roscarel and our Stage 5
Music students who performed on the night.
There were many comments about the
brilliant music program we run at UCS.
Melissa Rees is our Head Teacher for the
Lachlan Access Program and is based at
Condobolin High School. Melissa works
extremely hard to ensure that our senior
students can access quality learning. I am
excited to announce that Melissa has received
a 2017 Minister’s and Secretary’s Award for
Excellence in Teaching, which was presented
in Sydney yesterday. This is a very
distinguished award and one that is very well
deserved. Congratulations Miss Rees!
Parent/teacher interviews are on Monday
afternoon after our assembly. Please contact
the front office to make an appointment with
your child’s teachers.
A reminder to all community members to
complete and hand in the UCS survey. It’s a
very simple survey with only three questions to
answer. There are two boxes in the front office
to place your survey and ticket to the prize
draw. There are not many surveys in the box
yet so get them in for a chance to win a $50
shopping voucher!

Eleven students travelled into the West Wyalong show last Wednesday as part of our Cattle Judging Program. Unfortunately there were no cattle to judge, but the students had a good time looking at all the exhibits in the different sections. We watched Sammy ride her horse and did our own judging of some of the Merino rams. The boys enjoyed talking to a professional feral animal shooter, and the machinery displays were a hit. Tom displayed his prowess crutching some sheep with students from West Wyalong High, and we watched the crossbred ram sale. Even though we went for cattle judging, the day was still good for the students to experience many agricultural sectors. While at the show, the students accepted the ‘Most Successful Exhibitor in the Industrial Hall’ prize for Ungarie Central Schools display. A number of students were also successful in the ‘Art and Craft’ competitive school sections in the pavilion. Cattle Judging

HUMBUG NATURE TRAIL WORKING BEE
Ungarie Central School students and community members had a successful day on Monday 11th September at the
first working bee for the Humbug Nature Trail. A hugh amount of rubbish was removed from the creek and it
already looks tidier. Twelve established native trees, twenty one native shrubs and one hundred native grasses
were planted. The dry conditions were very challenging with loads of water carted to all the plants.
We would like to thank the following people for their assistance; Vanessa Williams, Justine Henley, Jason Lewis,
Sally Russell (Lake Cowal Conservation Centre), Glenn Neyland (Bland Shire Council) and David Kellett (Local Land
Services). We thoroughly appreciate your help!

LCCC SCIENCE ACTIVITIES AT UCS
On Monday 28th August Sally Russell from Lake Cowal Conservation Centre visited Ungarie Central School and
conducted a variety of science activities with the students.
The K/1/2 Living Things workshop looked at animals and how they camouflage themselves in their habitats
and the effect on animals when habitats are destroyed. We also looked at food chains and how animals survive
within ecosystems. We discussed the ecosystem that exists in and around a wetland, looking at waterbugs and
also the crawling bugs that live in the leaf litter near the water. Catching waterbugs was great fun, looking at
them under the microscope and identifying them was so interesting. Seeing all the body parts, hairy bits,
mouths, eyes and watching them move and breathe was a highlight. Worms, slaters and millipedes were other
amazing animals under the microscope.
In Yr 3/4’s Living Things session we discussed what animals need to survive, looked at a variety of different
habitats and using a number of different local animals, were able to make and discuss food chains. We
discovered that some animals have a large diet and this created a food web of who eats who. The discovery
and identification of waterbugs that live in a wetland was done by catching bugs and looking at them under
the microscopes. Again seeing the legs, mouths, eyes, digestive tracts, breathing and other weird bits was very
engaging and created lots of great discussions about why the bugs had those bits.
Yr 5/6 worked with Microbes and after discussing and looking at a variety of microbes; viruses, bacteria and
fungus and their positive and negative uses, we had a look at an experiment. The Year 5/6 class had already
started looking at bread and how long it takes to 'go off' and grow mould on it. They had also swabbed some
areas around the school to see which areas were the dirtiest, growing a culture of really interesting microbes.
Sally brought with her some McDonalds burgers she had bought 4 weeks earlier and had sitting in their original
packaging in her garage. We discussed and predicted what each burger would look like and carefully
unwrapped them to look, the results shocked and surprised us all. The burgers didn't look much different to
the day they were bought, no mould and surprisingly had a bit of 'squish' still in the bread/bun. The following
discussions about what is in the food to make it stay like that was very interesting and did change some
thoughts about how good the food is for you.

SYDNEY RECORDER EXCURSION 4TH-6TH SEPTEMBER
The Sydney Recorder team have had a big year, performing at the West Wyalong High School Concerts, attending the cluster
rehearsal at Borambola, playing for the CWA ladies in Term 2, performing at the UCS Open Day assembly earlier this term, as
well as attending weekly rehearsals and practising at home.
All this preparation paid off last week when we travelled to Sydney to perform at the Jacaranda Concert in the Opera House
on Tuesday night.
The nine students were accompanied by Mrs Mason, Mrs Jackson and seven parents (Mark and Fiona Bryant, Steve Henley,
Colleen Robb, Michelle Roscarel, Sally West and Vanessa Williams), with Jason doing a fantastic job driving the bus under
some trying conditions (particularly the wind gusts on the way home).
We made excellent time on the way to Sydney on Monday, leaving UCS about 8am and stopping for a morning tea break at
the park at Harden (which was no less cold, windy and rainy than last year!) and lunch at the park in Goulburn (ditto).
We arrived at the Sydney Harbour YHA before 4pm and checked in, and then Jason dropped us off at Darling Harbour where
we played some arcade games and challenged ourselves with laser tag (Allora Vinecombe was the top scorer!). After tea in
the food court, we stepped outside our comfort zone on the ferris wheel before walking back to the YHA and retiring to our
rooms.
On Tuesday, Sally and Steve joined us for a walk across the Harbour Bridge, and then we went to the Museum of Contemporary
Art for a tour. Our guide Jodie was very enthusiastic about her work, but some of us were a little non-plussed by the clay
power points.
After lunch at Circular Quay, we changed into our recorder shirts and walked to the Opera House for the rehearsal, which
went well. We dropped in at Sticky on the way back to the YHA and had tea at the Orient Hotel before returning to the Opera
House for the big performance. As well as playing our pieces, we got to see a lot of other ensembles performing a range of
items at a high level. The jazz bands were popular, and the xylophone duet was pretty amazing too.
An Opera House concert would not be complete without a visit to the Gelato shop on the way home, which we duly did, and
then it was off to bed for an early start again.
On Wednesday we packed up and Jason dropped us off outside Sunrise, where we displayed our school sign (mostly the right
way up) and got on TV for the folks at home to see. After that it was back on the bus and off to Goulburn.
Lunch at Goulburn (and a climb up inside the Big Merino), followed by a pit stop at the Harden park, saw us arrive back at
Ungarie around 4pm.
Congratulations to all members of the recorder team for the work they have put in throughout the year, and for the excellent
behaviour displayed on this excursion. It has been a pleasure to play music with you, and wonderful to see the progress you
have made! Many thanks also go to the parents who helped with transport and other logistical issues, and to Jason for doing
such a great job with the bus. The recorder team would also like to thank our generous sponsors, including pie drive
customers, the P&C, the CWA, Jeff deRozario and Eric Haworth, who have helped make the excursion possible.
