Dear Parents/ Caregivers, The PAT testing for all students will start this week for all year levels. Students will be assessed on their reading comprehension and numeracy in the JP and UP classes. The PAT assessment data will be used by staff to determine areas requiring revision as well as an indication of the progress made since PAT testing in 2016. All testing will be conducted on-line.
In recent weeks, I have attended various workshops regarding the teaching and learning within schools. It is reassuring to hear from the DECDS leaders that we should be concentrating on doing a few things well rather than flitting from one new idea to the next. Here, at Wirrabara, the teachers have been concentrating on improving the writing skills of our students in line with the Partnership and DECD plans. The UP class are focussing on grammar and sentence structure and the JP class have been encouraged to make their own books and use IT skills to publish their work.
Book Week: A big thank you to all students and staff for dressing up as part of the Children’s Book Week. The theme this year was ‘Escape to Everywhere’. The costumes reflected this theme. Check out the photo and imagine where we ended up! Hats: As the weather is showing improvement, the Cancer Council is urging everyone to be vigilant and wear a broad brimmed hat to protect from UV rays even on cloudy days! As a Sun Smart School, we should be wearing hats from 1
st September onwards until the end
of the school year. Please ensure that your child has a school hat. The students and staff had a great day celebrating Outdoor Classroom Day at the Wongabirrie Park: Students participated in a nature treasure hunt and a tower building competition. Many splashed around in the creek, looking for suitable building materials. The UP class finished the day by photographing Wirrabara buildings as part of their history project. Amalgamation: The leaders, Wirrabara PS Governing Council reps and Dean Angus met with Ashley Smith to discuss possible bus routes for 2018. These routes will be published shortly for discussion and feedback. Watch this space. The new school logo was approved and will be available for the next newsletter. Building works: the committee are awaiting costs from the Quantity Surveyor before final decisions are made and the work sent for tender.
SHOE BOX DONATIONS We are filling shoe boxes again this year for Operation Christmas Child. Could you please check your brochure that was sent home with the last newsletter for appropriate gift ideas? We will be packing them in Week 10. HOT CHOCOLATE DAY Don’t forget our Friday Hot Chocolate days will continue until the end of this term. Please remember to bring your money and mugs on Fridays. Jayne Mainprize-Potter

BRING HOME A BIG BROTHER OR SISTER AND BRING FRENCH, ITALIAN OR SPANISH CULTURE TO LIFE!
Why not volunteer to host an international student from France, Italy or Spain next year? We have a small group of delightful students coming to Australia for 11 weeks to immerse in local Australian culture, experience our High schools, sports, environment and lifestyle. All these international students are around 15 or 16 years old, speak excellent English, have their own spending money, cover all school expenses, and we arrange all aspects of their program. They are looking forward to joining an Australian family for a short term cultural immersion stay. It’s fun and interesting to help these young people achieve their Australian dream. If you would like to know more, please email your interest to ICM on [email protected] or call Georgie or Anja on 1800 500 501, or visit our website www.icm-education.com.
Last week we had
some fabulous
Topic Talks. Our
topic was
‘something I have
made’. Mia made
some delicious
cupcakes, Abbie
made a fairy
village, Dustin
made a jet and
Teagan made some
lego.
We have been writing our own
puppet plays ready to perform
Over the past few weeks we have
been visiting Laura Primary as part
of our transition. Everyone had lots
of fun:
Teagan liked learning Italian
Dustin liked playing footy with his
friends
Mia liked playing with her friends.
Abbie liked playing in the cubby
house.
This week a lot of our time has been spent taking photos to copy and paste into a Publisher, Word, and Power-point software. In History we are focussing on Wirrabara, the town itself. In Maths we have focussed on Symmetry, what it means, finding symmetrical patterns, lines of symmetry and asymmetrical shapes, then classifying and recording them accurately. On our Outdoor Learning Day, we challenged ourselves in building the tallest tower.
