As you read the newsletter this week, our Grade 4-6 students and staff are at Camp ADANAC for an action packed three days of adventure and challenges. We can’t wait to share our photos and stories with you in the next newsletter.
2018 Foundation School Fun Session have been running with our Physical Education session held last week. We had a very excited group of future Gladesville students come along to participate in a fun PMP session with Miss Alexander and Mrs Maddison. Thanks to these two wonderful staff members for their organisation of thoroughly engaging learning session. If you have a child starting school in 2018 or 2019, or know of families with children of this age. Please contact Hollie in the office for enrolment information including School Fun and Transition session times.
Orbeez balls are being brought to school by some
students. They are being carried floating in water, in zip lock bags,
enclosed pencil sharpeners and drink bottles. The balls are made of
superabsorbent polymers (synthetic material) that with the addition of
water can grow to more than 100 times their volume. Due to the obvious
dangers of students consuming the balls via their drink bottles, can you
please ensure Orbeez balls are not taken to school. Any student found
with them in class will have them collected and returned to parents.
Thank you all in advance for your support of the school as we continue
to put student safety first, and as always please don’t hesitate to call if
you have any queries or concerns.
Have a wonderful week!

Parent Opinion Survey 2017
Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our
school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the
Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a
sample of randomly selected parents at each school. The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA
Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. The survey can be accessed via desktop
computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any convenient time within the fieldwork period from Monday 7th
August to Sunday 27th August.
Jump Rope for Heart
Our school is participating in the Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart program and we would love your support! Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart is an exciting and non-competitive program, which encourages children to become more active through skipping, learning new skills and raising vital funds for heart research, and community health programs.
Skipping is an excellent way for children to keep fit and healthy. Over the next few weeks, your child will be learning a range of fun skipping skills and new tricks. We will emphasise the importance of regular physical activity and the importance of healthy eating for a healthy lifestyle.
Jump Rope for Heart is also a great way to encourage children to get involved in our community and support Australia’s’ leading heart health charity, the Heart Foundation. The Jump Rope team provides us with lots of resources and support to implement the program and in return, we ask that students help by seeking sponsorship for their involvement.
A donation of $2, $5 or $10 can be made at the office or alternatively you can register your child at:
Visit: www.jumprope.org.au go to the Kids tab and click on REGISTER
Our schools fundraising website is live and ready to go. Please visit:
http://jumprope.everydayhero.do/jumprope2017/Gladesville_Primary_School_Gladesville_VIC_131520
A secure fundraising page will be created as soon as you register, and then you are encouraged to share this link with as many people as possible. This is an easy, safe way for your child to monitor their progress, receive bonus prizes and even receive sponsorship from family and friends who are further
afield.
At the end of the program, on the Thursday 14th September 10am to 1.30pm we will be holding a Jump Off. This is an event to celebrate the conclusion of the Jump Rope program and it’s a great opportunity for you to witness how much fun skipping can be. Come along and pick up a rope!
When your child has finished fundraising online let your teacher know and for your own reference you may like to print out a copy of the donations received online. Thank you for joining us in the fight against heart disease and we look forward to getting the whole school jumping!

School Council Update
Last Wednesday was our monthly School Council Meeting. At this meeting,
our usual agenda business of finance, correspondence, subcommittee minutes and general business
was tabled and discussed. It has been wonderful to have our Lighthouse Leaders from Junior School
Council send the minutes of their meeting to be tabled and discussed. Next month two student
representatives from this subcommittee will attend school council for the first time. School Council
discussed the delay in the Inclusive Schools Fund works. School Council President, Kerryn Morey and
Principal, Nicki Wood, have sent a second letter to raise our concerns regarding the delay of this project.
We hope to have more information for the school community by our next School Council Meeting. Thanks
to all of our wonderful school councillors who continue to support the school and work in partnership for
the benefit of our students.
Trivia Night – SELLING OUT FAST
Our major fundraising event for this year is our Trivia Night. This event is being
organised by the Gladesville Staff as a way of providing parents and caregivers
with an event that they can simply come to and enjoy, without having to do the
preparation. Naomi Hobbs is leading the coordination of donations of silent auction items, raffle prizes
and financial donations. If you know of a company, organisation or someone that may be able to make a
donation for this event, please contact Hollie, Naomi or Nicki and we will get in touch with them. We
currently have three fully booked tables and look forward to seeing this grow in the coming week. All
funds raised go directly student learning resources.

Visual Arts Junior School: For the last month, we have been focusing on the art principle of line
and the different ways we can produce line to fill space in a piece of work. To accent
the way we have used line we are utilising the art element of emphasis, in particular contrast, to make
our line art “pop”. The artwork we have produced over the last month has been designed for students to
practise Habit 6, Synergise, where students collaborate to create the final piece of art proving that
TOGETHER REALLY IS BETTER. Our final pieces will be on display in the corridor, keep your eyes out,
you will not miss them!
Senior School: Over the last month, the senior school has focused on the art principles of line and
colour. We have worked with the medium of watercolour to produce a simple yet very effective piece of
work where less is more and more is less. This concept of “knowing when to stop” is fundamental to
Habit 2, Begin with the End in Mind. Student have needed to have a clear plan and vision for their work
in order to produce the desired effect. These artworks will be on display in the front foyer and are really
worth a look.
Indonesian This term the focus in Indonesian is on animals (Binatang). Over
the next few weeks students in F-3 will be learning about animals
at the zoo and lizards. They will be making a page for a class book about an animal
found at the zoo and as a class reading a book titled ‘Di kebun binatang’. Students
will also be learning an Indonesian song ‘Cicak-cicak di dinding’ which is all about
a lizard climbing up the wall looking for a mosquito to eat.
Cicak cicak di dinding
Cicak cicak di dinding
Diam diam merayap
Datang seekor nyamuk
Hap! Lalu ditangkap.
Students in grade 4-6 will be working in pairs to translate a list of sentences which describe two animals.
Students will then be asked to try and work out which animals these depict. We will also be working on
a role-play in Indonesian about walking through the jungle and seeing lots of different animals. We will
be using the dictionary to match the correct word with an animal picture. Some of the new words students
will be learning are:
harimau: tiger ular: snake melata: slither berenang: swim Wah! : Wow!
Melihat apa?: What can you see?
In all Indonesian lessons students are encouraged to make proactive choices and be in charge of their
own learning. A weekly certificate is presented to a student exhibiting these behaviours. Students are
encouraged to synergise as they work on group activities.
Fathers’ Day Breakfast Dads, Grandads and special friends are invited to Gladesville Primary School’s Fathers’ Day themed
Breakfast Club! There will be lots of scrumptious choices on the menu to enjoy with your children. We
look forward to celebrating Fathers’ Day with you all then! Thank you to the staff at Gladesville for
cooking and preparing our Fathers’ Day Breakfast again this year.

Gladesville Primary School Community Group
Science On Monday 14th August, Gladesville Primary School launched its five week
science program. All year levels were exposed to the world of science looking
through the lens of Botany – the study of plants. Using Habit 3- the class Put First Things First and made
safety a number one priority in all classes. With Habit 6 – the students Synergised and all agreed to a
science safety contract (see below) after exploring risks in a science classroom lab and the importance
to follow basic rules.
With safety understood, students used Habit 5 – Seeking To Understand Then
To Be Understood in identifying basic plant structures and functions using living
examples of plants. Sunlight, water and nutrients were identified as essential
for plant growth and survival. Students then used the first Habit – Be Proactive
to discover how water travels through a plant. Using food dye and white flowers,
students were delighted to make predictions and then discover that they could
change the colour of flowers – see the spectacular pictures below.
Thank you to all the teaching staff for giving up precious classroom time for
Science this term. Student and family feedback has been positive and together
with them I look forward to what Science has in store for them in the program.
Mr Gurr - Science Specialist Teacher
Junior School Foundation: In Reading, Foundation is exploring the author’s purpose for writing a text to assist their
comprehension. Students are retelling stories listened to and read, including, characters, the setting and
the beginning, middle and end. When reading unknown words, Foundation is blending and stretching out
the sounds.
With a continued focus on the use of capital letters and ending punctuation, Foundation is writing their
own narratives. Their narratives include a beginning, introducing the characters and setting, a middle,
the problem of the story and an ending, where the problem is resolved. Students also regularly write
recounts, focusing on an event that has already occurred, giving the reader information such as, when it
happened, who they were with, what they did and how they felt. Foundation is blending two sounds
together to make a new sound (digraphs). We are focusing on th, sh, and ch. Students are learning the
difference between vowels and consonants and how to use onset and rime to spell simple words (eg.
cat, bat, mat, sat, chat)
Foundation’s Wildly Important Maths Goal is to count to 100. Students will develop the skills to count to
100 in different ways. At the beginning of the term, Foundation represented simple financial situations
using money in our class shop. Students began to learn the features of Australian coins and how they
can be ordered in value. With a focus on spheres, cubes, cones and cylinders, we explored 3D shapes,
naming them and identifying them in the environment. Foundation is now focusing on location and
transformation, where we look at the position and movement of an object.
Our inquiry learning unit, Fairness and Friendship sees students explore
the importance of how to make and keep friends. They learn about the
importance of rules and ways to accept differences of opinion. Listening
skills are a focus of this unit. Foundation is continuing to focus on how using
the 7 Habits to be a leader can fit into any part of our lives.
Grade 1/2M: In Reading, students have learnt about simple and compound sentences. They practised
recognising who and what was involved in the sentence. They also began asking questions in reading.
For the remainder of the term, Grade 1/2 will be focusing on asking questions, connecting with characters
and inferring. This will support the students’ comprehension and the development of a deeper
understanding of texts.
In Writing, students looked at the structure of recounts and began writing creative narratives. The focus
for the remainder of the semester is on creative narratives and informational texts. The students will be
working on their Wildly Important Goal of writing independently for 9 hours by the end of term. The
spelling focuses for Grade 1/2 were word endings (eg. s, ing, ed) and initial and final consonant blends
(eg. st, pl, lk). The students will now begin learning long vowel sounds (eg. ai, ay, ee, igh)
In Maths, students explored length, mass and capacity. They ordered, sorted and counted money. For
the remainder of the term, Grade 1/2 will learn about division, fractions and location. The students will
continue practising their basic number facts to support a deeper understanding of number manipulation.
During Term 3 we are exploring the concept of Social Justice with a focus on
multiculturalism and the development of empathy, understanding and curiosity
about people from different cultures. The students will investigate the different
cultural groups that make up multicultural Australia, ways to enjoy and get the most
out of living in a multicultural society and the importance of treating all people fairly
and with respect.
We began the term with a focus on Habit 3, Put First Things First. The students considered the important
things in their lives and how to prioritise them. We are beginning to learn about Habit 4, Think Win Win
and will then focus on Habit 5, Seek First To Understand Then To Be Understood. These Habits
demonstrate the importance of recognising others’ feelings and support the development of positive
relationships.
Grade 2/3C
Reading: At the beginning of term we focused on Visualising and Inferring in our Reading Workshops.
The students used these skills to determine the meaning of unknown words and build their personal
glossaries. They used clues in the text to visualise the setting and the appearance of main characters.
Year 2/3 is now looking at how we can infer what a character is thinking and feeling. We are moving
towards describing character traits and their emotional development through the story.
Later the students will be focusing on identifying and distinguishing between the topic, main ideas and
supporting details in text.
Mathematics: At the beginning of this term Year 2/3 learnt about division
and we are currently learning about fractions of a whole, a group and on
a number line. We will shortly be investigating the concepts of Mass,
Volume, Symmetry, transformation and angles and lines.
Writing: The students have completed their unit of narrative writing and
are looking at writing non-fiction text in the formats of an explanation,
information report and information narrative.
Spelling / Grammar: Spelling workshop 1 - At the beginning of the term,
the spelling focuses for Grade 1/2 were word endings (e.g. s, ing, ed) and
initial and final consonant blends (eg. st, pl, lk). The students will now
begin learning long vowel sounds (e.g. ai, ay, ee, igh)
Spelling workshop 2 – This term the students have learnt prefixes and suffixes, adding suffixes to words
ending in ‘e’, doubling consonants when adding ‘ed’ and ‘ing’ such as running. We are currently working
on compound words, plurals and contractions such as ‘don’t’.
7 Habits: Year 2/3 looked at Habit 3 putting First things first and what that really means for them in their
lives. They are currently practising Habit 5 - Seek first to understand and then be understood. Listening
with our heart and mind to someone else before you speak and express your own views. We will explore
how both these Habits help us with Habit 4 – Think win-win.
Inquiry: Social Justice
During Term 3 the students are exploring the concept of Social Justice with a focus on multiculturalism
and the development of empathy, understanding and curiosity about people from different cultures. The
students will investigate the different cultural groups that make up multicultural Australia, ways to enjoy
and get the most out of living in a multicultural society and the importance of treating all people fairly and
with respect.
Senior School In reading this term, the senior school students are concentrating on comprehension skills, particularly
summarising and compare and contrast (same and different) In writing, students are looking at poetry,
to help us with our inquiry topic. Students are building their poetry skills and
learning new ones. In spelling, we are focusing on personal spelling words
coming from students’ writing, sight words and vocabulary from our inquiry
topic.
In Maths, we will be concentrating on fractions, place value and 3D shapes.
Our unit of inquiry is Care for the Kids where we are investigating aid agencies
that support children, issues facing children living in poverty and actions that
improve children's lives. At the end of the term, we will be celebrating our
learning with a Slam Poetry presentation for our family and friends to come enjoy.
As always, we are continuing to learn to use all 7 Habits throughout our daily lives and improving our
leadership skills.
