LAST TIME OUTThe Jackets took two of three games from NC State. Four Yellow Jackets hit home runs as the Jackets outscored NC State, 17-13, on the weekend.

With three games left in the season, the Jack-ets have six more wins than they did all of last season and one more win in conference play.

STREAKINGCourtney Ziese is on an 11-game reached base streak in which she is hitting .342 with 13 hits, 10 runs, nine RBI, four home runs and four walks.

THE LONG HAULGeorgia Tech has played seven extra-inning games, five of which have gone to 10+innings.

In game one at Syracuse, the Jackets and Orange duked it out for 13 innings - officially the longest game in school history, beating the 12-inning game the Jackets played in their season opener at Georgia State on Feb. 17.

As if 13 innings wasn’t enough, 30 minutes after that 13-inning game, the Jackets played another extra-inning game against the Orange, this one going to eight innings.

Only six other NCAA Division I softball teams have played a 13-inning game this season.

DINGERZThe Yellow Jackets split a pair of games at Syracuse in which Georgia Tech hit six home runs.

Tech blasted four home runs in game one, two by Courtney Ziese, and hit a pair in game two - another by Ziese and the go-ahead run in the eighth inning from Colleen Darragh.

Ziese (10) and Samantha Pierannunzi (6) have combined for more than half of Georgia Tech’s total home runs (27).

WALK OFF WINSGeorgia Tech and Virginia Tech took a 0-0 tie to the bottom of the seventh in Atlanta. Maddie Lionberger stepped to the plate and roped a leadoff home run to left for the walk-off win.

The home run was the first of the season for Lionberger and 11th of her career. The win saved the sweep after the Jackets fell to the Hokies 1-0 and 5-0.

The Jackets did it again vs. Virginia. Georgia Tech earned an 8-6 walk-off win in 11 innings against Virginia. Tied 6-6 in the bottom of the 11th inning, freshman Jordan Deep drew a two-out, pinch hit walk to extend the inning for Samantha Pierannunzi whose home run to center secured the 8-6 victory

Earlier in the game, Colleen Darragh’s 3-run home run tied the game at six to keep Tech alive.

WALK THIS WAYSamantha Pierannunzi leads the team with 28 walks; doing her job as the leadoff batter to get on base. Those 28 walks are tied for seventh in the ACC

Doing her job as a leadoff batter, Pierannunzi had a 14-game reached base streak from Feb. 28-March 18.- During that time she hit .395 with 15 hits in 38 at bats. She scored 11 runs with three home runs to go along with 10 walks.

WORK, WORK, WORK, WORK, WORKFriday’s game against Boston College on 3/11 kicked off a 12-game stretch over a 10-day period for the Yellow Jackets.

500 CAREER WINSHead coach Shelly Hoerner earned her 500th career head coaching win in a 2-0 victory against Southern Utah on Saturday, Feb. 27 in Santa Barbara, Calif. She was honored pregame against Boston College on March 12.

SOLID SLATE The Georgia Tech softball team’s schedule features 25 games against 12 2015 NCAA Tournament participants and 27 home games at Mewborn Field.

Twelve of the teams Tech plays this season advanced to a 2015 NCAA Regional (St. John’s, South Carolina, Louisville, Chattanooga, North-western, UCF, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Kansas, Pitt, North Carolina and NC State), and NC State made it to the Super Regionals.

TEAM BONDING - NAVY SEAL TRAININGThe Jackets kicked off spring practices with a team building, leadership, and physical training session with Stonewall Solutions, run by two Navy SEALs. Georgia Tech has the fastest “tire flip” time of any NCAA women’s team in any sport that Stonewall Solutions has worked with, coming in at 1:51.00.

2016 YELLOW JACKETSThe Jackets return six position starters in 2016 and add five newcomers in pitcher Jenna Go-odrich, catcher Kaylee Ellebracht, infielder/out-fielder Katie Krzus, speedster infielder/outfielder Sydney Stavro and infielder Jordan Deep.

Georgia Tech returns its top three hitters to the plate this season in Samantha Pierannunzi who led the team with a .306 average a year ago, Mad-die Lionberger and Courtney Ziese, who blasted a team best seven home runs with 26 RBI.

HEAD COACH SHELLY HOERNER

SHELLY HOERNERHEAD COACHCANISIUS COLLEGE, 1996THIRD SEASON AT GEORGIA TECH

@SLIS23

In 2015, Hoerner coached the Yellow Jackets to upset victories against No. 20 Nebraska and No. 22 Texas A&M. Maddie Lionberger earned her second career All-Conference honor under Hoerner’s wing when she was named All-ACC Second Team.

In her first season on the Flats, Hoerner led the Yellow Jackets to a 23-24 record and an 11-17 ACC record (8th place). The season’s highlights included series sweeps over conference foes Virginia and Maryland, and a series victory against North Carolina on senior weekend. The 2014 club also notched a pair of wins over ranked opponents in Tulsa and Notre Dame.

Under Coach Hoerner’s direction, Tech ranked third in the ACC in batting average (.297) and led the ACC in stolen bases per game (1.38). Meanwhile, Georgia Tech pitchers lowered their ERA from 5.37 to 4.21 in her first season. Individually, Hoerner coached two All-ACC performers in Maddie Lionberger (1st team) and Ashley Thomas (2nd team).

Prior to Georgia Tech, Hoerner compiled a record of 254-206 at the College of Charleston, including a 105-72 mark in Southern Conference play. The Southern Conference Coach of the Year in 2007, Hoerner led the Cougars to a record of 37-20 overall, 15-8 in the Southern Conference, last season. Her career overall record in 14 years is 458-326.

During her time at College of Charleston, Hoerner coached the Southern Conference Player of the Year in 2007 and 2009, and the SoCon Pitcher of the Year in 2011. Her Cougar teams were runner-up in the Southern Conference Tournament in 2011 and 2012.

Since 2005, Hoerner has also served as head coach of USA Athletes International, which has played in foreign tours all over Europe.

Prior to working at College of Charleston, Hoerner spent a month in 2005 at NC State, where she served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

From 2000-2005, Hoerner was a successful head coach at Barry University, compiling a cumulative record of 191-82. She led Barry to Sunshine State Conference championships in 2002 and 2003, and she was named the conference’s Coach of the Year both of those seasons. In 2002, she led Barry to a regional title and was selected as the regional Coach of the Year.

Hoerner began her head coaching career at Valdosta State, where she coached one season (2000). She first embarked on a coaching career as an assistant coach at Barry from 1996-99.

Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Hoerner was an outstanding player on the collegiate level. In two years at Barry University (1993-94), the Buccaneers won 80 games. An all-conference selection, Hoerner helped Barry advance to the NCAA Division II College Softball World Series, where the Buccaneers finished in fifth place. In her two seasons at Barry, Hoerner struck out just six times in 224 at bats while scoring 41 runs and collecting 30 RBI.

Following the 1994 season she transferred to Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y., where she ranks among the school’s all-time leaders in fielding percentage and stolen bases. In 1995, Hoerner led the Golden Griffins to a 28-14 mark, 11-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and records of 33-7 and 11-1 in 1996. Canisius won the MAAC title in both years and Hoerner was a two-time all-conference selection.

Hoerner also gained both professional and world experience in 1998 when she signed with Cavigal Nice Sports, a team in Nice, France, during the summer. She played catcher and helped guide the team to a fifth-place finish in the European Championships.

A 1996 graduate of Canisius, Hoerner also holds a Master’s degree from Barry in 2003. Hoerner and husband, Jeff, were married in 1999, and the couple have a daughter, Meeka May.
