ST MARTIN’S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER [WEEK 1, TERM 3 | 27 JULY 2017]
WEEK 1, TERM 3 THURSDAY, 27 JULY 2017
Deputy Principal
Welcome Back Everyone!
It was heart-warming to walk around on Tuesday and see everyone’s happy faces back in ‘their place’.
We had a spectacular start to the term with the P&F organised coffee stand, which was a lovely way to
welcome our new families and welcome back other members of our community. Stuart, the resident
barista, will be in our community again on Thursday 3rd August in the afternoon …the staff are already
looking forward to his visit!
We particularly welcome the following new students who have joined
our community this term: Term 3 Reception Class (RQ) - Tobenna
Aloysius-Amechi, Cooper Braggs, Claire Brazzatti, Amelia Carr, Romero
Erdelji, Jack Erickson, Abhiraj Gill, Ashlyn Gitonga, Lilly Grantham, Sidak
Kahlon, Livia Lin, Pierangelo Marrazzo, Dhiya Mathew, Tara Osmond,
Harman Pelia, Matilda Rule, Japreen Saini, Lucas Scarinci, Japnoor
Singh, Ebony Smith, Ayan Vyas, Thea Wilkinson; Jordan Cook (3BB), Max
Cook (2M), Hunter Cook (RV) and Charlotte Kings (commencing on
Monday in RV).
We hope that they feel valued, loved and inspired in our community and that St. Martin’s is a place where
they flourish.
We welcome Heather Quinn to fulltime work in our school as the teacher of RQ, Monica Vincenzino as the
teacher of RV, Luke Williams in 4PK while Paul Panos is on Long Service Leave this term and Bronte Platt to
6LG for Weeks 1 & 2 (while Louise Gellard is on Long Service Leave) and then 2K from the commencement
of Maddy Keelan’s maternity leave (Week 7).
If you have dropped off or picked up your child this week, you probably have already noticed the five new
classrooms on the oval. These Transportables will be with us for a couple of years while we undergo a
building program that is necessary to accommodate all the teaching and learning that happens in our
school. These learning spaces will house Art, Italian, Music, ‘Our Place’ and a room which will be used by
all the specialists who come in to support our students in their learning – Physiotherapists, Occupational
Therapists, Speech Pathologists and Instrumental teachers, to name a few. Once the oval has recovered
from the heavy transport that has been over it, the students will return to using this play space but for now,
the gym will be open and supervised at recess and lunchtime for the students to play in. We are living by
the motto short-term pain for long-term gain for a while, but we believe that no student will be
disadvantaged by this development. In fact, it has already generated quite a bit of excitement and
enthusiasm in our community.
On Monday, the teaching staff spent the day with Kate Dilger, the Science Teachers Association
Educational Officer. She provided us with a workshop day on teaching STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics) in which we developed a common understanding of STEM Education and
ST MARTIN’S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER [WEEK 1, TERM 3 | 27 JULY 2017]
different problem solving processes, looked at strategies to deliver a
STEM approach to teaching and learning and explored resources that
can support STEM Education. Kate has a real passion for this area, a
wisdom that is easily accessible and enthusiasm that is contagious. We
learnt how to get students to fall in love with problem solving and
become thinkers, not just scholars! If you would like to know more about
this workshop, I am sure that your child’s teacher would be happy to share their learning with you.
Our Curriculum ESOs (Educational Support Officers who work to support students and their learning) spent
the day at a workshop facilitated by Louise Williams and Leanne Dryer. They learnt to identify the escalation
phase and strategies that can be used in the environment and how to set up the general environment and
a sensory room including an overview of sensory processing and tools that we can use within the sensory
room and beyond and strategies to calm a person who is escalating.
Last term, we put considerable effort into checking winter uniform and ensuring that students and their
parents were aware of these requirements. Students who were not in correct school uniform were given
the school holidays to ensure that they had the correct uniform. When you enrol your child at St. Martin’s,
you sign an agreement that you will adhere to the uniform policy of the school. This is only negotiable in
special circumstances whereby your child has a letter from a specialist regarding their need for an
adaptation to the uniform. We are proud of our school and the way our students are presented and we
expect the same of the parents and students in our community. Please ensure that your child is able to feel
the sense of PRIDE that we name as one of our school values, by the way they present themselves as a St.
Martin’s student.
We believe that it is important to develop in our students a feeling of pride in themselves and their school,
and a sense of personal tidiness and cleanliness.
Our school uniform presents an identity and a public image to the wider community.
A school uniform enables each student to have equal social status with regard to dress and eliminates
competition and class distinction.
(St. Martin’s Catholic Primary School Uniform Policy)
We have a number of students who have colour in their hair (both ‘temporary’ and permanent) at present.
Our uniform policy states, Coloured hair, coloured streaking, coloured highlights and coloured hair spray
are not permitted.
Please do not allow your child to have their hair coloured.
To all those students who ARE beautifully presented and in correct uniform….THANK YOU!
Included with this newsletter is an Information sheet on Nationally Consistent Collection of
Data. It is important to note that students are not identified in this data; no names are used, only a number
allocated by the school. Parents whose children are included in this data have signed their child’s
adjustments and are already aware that their child's data will be entered into the system. If you have any
further questions about this collection of data, please make contact with me before the end of the week
as we will be signing off on our school data early next week.
I hope that Term 3 brings joy, wonder, awe, challenge, success and contentment to each of you as we
continue to Love to Learn and Learn to Love.

APRIM (Assistant Principal - Religious Identity and Mission)
Greetings from the Assistant Principal – Religious Identity & Mission
(APRIM) - Rose Valenti
Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop – Tuesday 8 August
We will be celebrating this special feast day with a Mass at 9am hosted by the
Year 2 classes. We will set the scene as we did last year with a wagon wheel,
bales of hay, gum leaves and who knows perhaps even a little bird or two!
The students and staff are invited to wear Aussie inspired clothes on this day.
A Woman With A Heart For Mission
Seek first the poorest and most neglected parts of God’s vineyard. 1900
Scripture:
The spirit of God is upon me, because God has anointed me to bring good news
to the poor. Luke 4:18
Reflection:
Mary MacKillop was devoted to the service of the poor. Her love for poor children knew no bounds. She
established a Catholic school system for children who were isolated and in poor circumstances. She had a
practical love for those who were poor and destitute setting up orphanages, refuges for the sick and elderly
and visited those who were in prison. She welcomed those experiencing difficult situations and provided
opportunities for those who were most vulnerable in the society of her time.
Story from the Life of Mary MacKillop:
Mary MacKillop had driven some miles in a snow storm, but her first wish was to visit the school. There was a
poor little bare-footed and ragged boy standing in the class. Mary went straight to him, and putting her
arms around him kissed him saying. ‘Ah Sister, these are the children I love.’
Pause for Reflection:
In what way is God calling me to bring good news to those who are poor?
Prayer:
God of love, your heart reaches out to those who are poor in our world. Open our eyes and ears to hear
the cries of your people bound down by the injustices of this world. May we like Mary MacKillop respond in
word and action to the struggling peoples of our world. St Mary of the Cross, serving the neglected ones,
pray for us.
Action:
Today reach out to someone in your neighbourhood who is in need.

Fr Kym
Fr Kym will be taking sick leave during August while he rests and recuperates. Please keep Fr Kym in your
personal prayers.
Outreach
Thank you for your generous donations of non-
perishable food items for our Annual Outreach
Day. St Vinnies volunteers attended and were
truly amazed yet again, at how much our school
supports those in need.
We also raised over $300 through our Silver Coin
Collection and a cheque was presented to the
volunteers at the Outreach Day. Many thanks
once again.

MITIOG – Term 3
Made in the Image of God is the official program for sexuality education in South Australian Catholic
Schools. It incorporates a sequential curriculum firmly based on Catholic moral teaching. The curriculum
is organised into four strands which explore essential aspects of the human person.
Being Human – this strand aims to affirm the value and dignity of human life and to promote reverence for
self, others and the whole of creation.
Being Sexual – this strand aims to explore the spiritual, physical, moral and psychological dimensions of
human sexuality and to develop an appreciation of Catholic Church teaching regarding sexuality.
Being Connected – this strand aims to explore the human vocation to love God and neighbour and to
develop an appreciation of the interdependence of humanity.
Being Moral – this strand aims to develop an understanding of what it is to be moral and to encourage
responsible decision making by exploring the processes of Christian decision making.
At St Martin’s, Being Human, Being Connected and Being Moral are woven into the Religious Education,
HASS, Health, Science, Child Protection and You Can Do It! programs offered to all students. The Being
Sexual strand will be taught in Term 3. If you have any questions, concerns or require to see an outline of
the key outcomes and possible learning opportunities offered for your child, please see the Class Teachers,
Rose, Susanne or Christine. Teachers have planned your child’s learning according to their specific level
and will only teach content appropriate for your child’s level of learning.
ReLAT
This term, the Year 4 students will have a practice and real ReLAT Test (Religious Literacy Assessment Tool).
The ReLAT test is designed to assist with reporting and evaluation in Religious Education at school and sector
levels.
The Year 4 students will sit the practice test on 10th August and the real test on 31st August. You would have
already received information about this test via a letter that went out at the end of last term. If you have
any queries about this test, please speak to Rose Valenti or the Year 4 class teachers.
