APATHY: THE CLINICAL SYNDROME Marin (1990) developed the

theoretical framework and the first widely used clinical definition of apathy. The core of the definition is “a state of primary motivational impairment”, where the lack of motivation is not attributable to emotional distress, intellectual deficit, or a diminished level of consciousness

Apathy, 10/1/14

WHAT IS MOTIVATION?

Motivation is the psychological domain concerned with goal-directed behavior. There are three important dimensions of impaired motivation: behavioral, cognitive, and emotional. Apathy, 10/1/14

BEHAVIORAL DIMENSION

The behavioral dimension includes diminished goal-directed overt behavior characterized by decreased initiative, effort, and productivity.

Apathy, 10/1/14

TRUE OR FALSE?

YOU CAN BE A CHRISTIAN AND NOT SHOW ANY INITIATIVE, EFFORT, OR PRODUCTIVITY.

WITHOUT ACTION, YOUR FAITH IS DEAD.

James 2:26 King James Version (KJV)

26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Apathy, 10/1/14

COGNITIVE DIMENSION

The cognitive dimension includes diminished goal-related thought content such as decreased interests, plans, or goals for the future.

Apathy, 10/1/14

TRUE OR FALSE?

YOU CAN BE A CHRISTIAN AND NOT HAVE ANY INTERESTS, PLANS OR GOALS.

AS YOU THINK, SO WILL YOU BE. Proverbs 23:7 King James

Version (KJV)

7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

Apathy, 10/1/14

WE MUST BELIEVE THAT HE WILL PROVIDE.

Hebrews 11:6 - But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.Apathy, 10/1/14

EMOTIONAL DIMENSION

Finally, the emotional dimension includes diminished emotional responses to goal-related events. Diminished emotions are characterized as emotional indifference or restricted responses to important life events that may present clinically as not having any feelings about things or just not caring.

Apathy, 10/1/14

TRUE OR FALSE?

YOU CAN BE A CHRISTIAN AND HAVE NO FEELINGS ABOUT THE THINGS OF GOD.

GOD DOES NOT LIKE IT WHEN WE DO NOT CARE.

Zephaniah 1:12-13 - And it shall come to pass at that time, [that] I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.  Apathy, 10/1/14

APATHY IS NOT LAZINESS, REBELLION, OR REFUSAL TO CARE.

Without appropriate psycho-education caregivers and family members often confuse the clinical syndrome of apathy with being lazy or oppositional, or as an intentional lack of caring.

Apathy, 10/1/14

LAZINESS IS SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

Whereas an apathetic person is unable to find a reason to care, a lazy person may have the desire and is perfectly able to do the behavior, but does not want to put for the necessary effort.

Apathy, 10/1/14

TRUE OR FALSE?

YOU CAN BE A CHRISTIAN AND BE LAZY.

SOME OF US CAN BE SLUGGARDS.

Proverbs 26:15New International Version (NIV)

15 A sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.

Apathy, 10/1/14

GOD WANTS US TO CARE FOR ONE ANOTHER AND BE BUSY. Romans 12:10-11King James

Version (KJV) 10 Be kindly affectioned one to

another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

APATHY IS NOT DEPRESSION.

Apathy has traditionally been viewed as a component of depression (Alexopoulos, 2005).

Marin (1990, 1997b) clarified how an apathy syndrome differs from depression. Apathy is primarily diminished motivation whereas depression is a mood disorder. While depression is characterized by negative thought content such as pessimism, hopelessness, self-deprecatory thoughts, and sadness, there is lack of emotional distress in apathy.

Apathy, 10/1/14

APATHY SYNDROME IS ASSOCIATED WITH:

Alzheimer’s Dementia (Guimarães, Levy, Teixeira, Beato, & Caramelli, 2008a)

Traumatic brain injury (Newburn & Newburn, 2005)

Parkinson’s Disease (Remy, Doder, Lees, Turjanski, & Brooks, 2005)

Stroke (Robinson, Jorge, Clarence-Smith, & Starkstein, 2009)

Huntington’s disease (Naarding, Janzing, Eling, Werf, & Kremer, 2009)

The use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), particularly among older adults (Wongpakaran, van Reekum, Wongpakaran, & Clarke, 2007).

ADOLESCENCE (Greene, personal experience)

SO, WHAT IS THE ANTIDOTE TO APATHY? JOY!Nehemiah 8:10

Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

Apathy, 10/1/14

WHAT IS JOY

Joy is a state of mind and an orientation of the heart. It is a settled state of contentment, confidence and hope. It is something or someone that provides a source of happiness. It appears 88 times in the Old Testament in 22 books; 57 times in the New Testament in 18 books.

Apathy, 10/1/14

HAPPINESS AND JOY ARE NOT THE SAME.

While happiness is temporary and is based upon happenings, joy is from the Lord and you can still experience joy during trials, suffering, and testing. Joy is permanent but happiness is fleeting.

Apathy, 10/1/14

JESUS EXPERIENCED JOY IN DYING ON THE CROSS.

Hebrews 12:2 Jesus, the founder and perfecter

of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Apathy, 10/1/14

COUNT IT ALL JOY!

James 1:2-3

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

Apathy, 10/1/14

THIS IS THAT JOY UNSPEAKABLE.

1 Peter 1:8-9 King James Version (KJV)

8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Apathy, 10/1/14

HOLD ON! JOY IS COMING!

Psalm 30:5 King James Version (KJV)

5 For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
