MEDINA SPIRIT, CONCERT TOUR PERMITTED IN PREAKNESSBy Bob Ehalt and Byron King

A horse race intended to propel the Triple Crown along—but

overshadowed by the specter of picograms, cancel culture, and split samples and resurrected memories of Dancer's Image and the 1968 Kentucky Derby (G1)—finally took shape May 11 as a field of 10 was entered for the $1 million Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico Race Course.

Zedan Racing Stables' Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit will break from post 3 in the May 15 middle jewel of the Triple Crown, but his status as the victor in the Run for the Roses fell into doubt May 9 when trainer Bob Baffert announced the son of Protonico had tested positive for the corticosteroid betamethasone. Facing possible disqualification from his May 1 score in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve at Churchill Downs, Medina Spirit was installed

as the 9-5 morning-line favorite for the Preakness.

Baffert's other Preakness starter, Gary and Mary West's multiple grade 2 winner Concert Tour, landed post 10 at a draw that was pushed back a day in the aftermath of the news about Medina Spirit's positive drug test. Concert Tour was pegged as the 5-2 second choice on the morning line.

Though Churchill Downs has barred Baffert from entering horses

at the Louisville track pending the conclusion of an investigation by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, and with a split sample result still to come in the weeks ahead, he was permitted to enter both horses in the Preakness after reaching an agreement Tuesday with the Maryland Jockey Club and 1/ST Racing that allows enhanced scrutiny of his horses racing at Pimlico.

Medina Spirit eyes the media the morning after his Kentucky Derby win at Churchill Downs

Baffert agreed to blood testing, monitoring, and medical record review by Maryland authorities on his two Preakness starters and Beautiful Gift, who will run in the May 14 George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2). Blood samples for each horse were drawn Tuesday and the MJC said it will scratch any of the horses should tests, expected back Friday, reveal an illegal substance.

Baffert initially denied treating Medina Spirit with betamethasone, but then issued a statement Tuesday saying that Medina Spirit had dermatitis on his hind end prior to the Kentucky Derby and was treated with an anti-fungal ointment, Otomax. Baffert said he has been informed that one of the substances in Otomax is betamethasone.

Prior to finding out about the drug violation, Baffert voiced praise for the courage Medina Spirit showed in posting a front-running half-length victory over grade 2 winner Mandaloun. It was the third win in six career starts for Medina Spirit.

"He's a courageous horse," Baffert said. "He reminds me of Silver Charm (Baffert's 1997 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner). "Whomever is next to him, he's going to beat that horse."

Ben Glass, the racing manager for Gary and Mary West, said Concert Tour has bounced back after a

disappointing third in the April 10 Arkansas Derby (G1), his first loss in four career starts.

"He's doing great. He's coming out of his skin," Glass said. "When they suit up for these races, they're all good horses. We just have to hope it's a good day for him and he feels like running."

A son of Street Sense, Concert Tour did not race in the Kentucky Derby to point for the Preakness with five weeks of rest.

A victory by either horse would extend Baffert's Preakness tally to eight wins. He already holds the record for most wins in the race by a trainer, with seven.

Trainer Chad Brown originally planned to enter just Crowded Trade in the Preakness, but decided to scratch Risk Taking from the May 8 Peter Pan Stakes (G3) at Belmont Park in order to run Saturday in Maryland instead.

Both horses are owned by Seth Klarman of Klaravich Stables. Crowded Trade, a son of More Than Ready, was third in the Wood Memorial Stakes Presented by Resorts World Casino (G2), a race in which Risk Taking, a Medaglia d'Oro colt, was seventh as the 2-1 favorite.

"They both have to improve quite a bit to run with Bob's two, but I feel that maybe after those two they are in the same group

as the others (in the Preakness). It's a huge purse so just to get a piece of it is worth it and, who knows, if something weird happens in the race and our horses really move up and one or both of the favorites falter, I want to be in position to take this race down," Brown said. "They couldn't be doing any better and I feel good about taking a chance with horses sitting on a good race."

Winchell Thoroughbreds' Midnight Bourbon rallied from 14th to finish sixth in the Kentucky Derby after he was bumped at the start and failed to show his typical speed.

A son of Tiznow, he won the Lecomte Stakes (G3) and was second in the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) for trainer Steve Asmussen.

"Midnight Bourbon was very consistent coming into the Derby," Asmussen said. "He wasn't exactly in position to run his best race that day, by the break, traffic, different reasons."

Whisper Hill Farms' Unbridled Honor enters the Preakness off a runner-up finish last month in the Stonestreet Lexington Stakes (G3).

Trained by newly minted Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, the son of Honor Code was fourth in the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2).

"When he ran second in the Lexington we decided to wait and see how things shape up and how he'd train," said Pletcher, who is searching for his first Preakness win. "He's trained well so we're going to take a shot. There should be a good pace for him and hopefully the race will set up nicely for him. He's a one-run horse so a fast pace will help."

Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas will bid for a record-tying seventh Preakness win with Christina Baker and William Mack's Ram, a May 1 allowance winner at Churchill Downs.

"I don't have any grandiose ideas that he's going to sweep them off his feet here but he's improved and he's doing very well," Lukas said about the son of American Pharoah. "He merits a chance."

The field also includes the Japanese entrant Yuji Inaida's France Go de Ina, a son of Will Take Charge who was sixth in the UAE Derby Sponsored by Emirates

NBD (G2) in Dubai."He will be one of those that you definitely want to

put a couple dollars on. Just in case," trainer Hideyuki Mori said. "If he doesn't race, he can't win it. The odds don't matter to us."

John and Diane Fradkin's Rombauer, a son of Twirling Candy who was third in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2), and Cypress Creek Equine, Arnold Bennewith, and Spendthrift Farm's Keepmeinmind, a Laoban colt who was seventh in the Kentucky Derby, round out the field.

To date, the only Kentucky Derby winner disqualified for a drug violation is Dancer's Image, who was stripped of his 1968 victory.

Conditions of Preakness Agreement Discussed

Craig Robertson, counsel for Baffert, distributed a letter the afternoon of May 11 to media outlets addressed to attorney Alan Rifkin, whose firm represents the Maryland Jockey Club, first outlining the agreement between the trainer and The Maryland Jockey Club, which operates Pimlico and Laurel Park in the state.

The Stronach Group, which owns and manages the Maryland Jockey Club, also issued a response, saying it would review relevant facts and information and consult the Maryland Racing Commission before making a decision on the entry of Baffert trainees.

Pimlico delayed entries this week.Robertson was prepared to take legal action if the

MJC had denied the trainer's entry. The letter notes that the horses were tested upon

arrival at Pimlico, and if any of the three horses test positive for a banned substance or above a designated limit for a medication, the horse will be scratched.

In a release that followed Robertson's announcement, TSG pledged the Baffert horses would be allowed to compete after following rigorous conditions to entry, along with a binding commitment from Baffert to full transparency of medical and testing results.

"We are well aware of the public outcry and calls for action that have been the natural outcome of a medication positive in one of the most iconic races in our sport and we share the disappointment and concern," Craig Fravel, CEO of 1/ST Racing, a division of TSG, said in a prepared statement. "We are required to acknowledge in this instance that fundamental fairness compels us to respect the individual rights of participants in our sport to due process and adherence to agreed-upon and well-established rules.

"To this point, there has to our knowledge been no split sample testing as is required in every state in this country and no complaint or other official action has been announced by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission with regard to this incident. While the integrity of our sport is of utmost importance, it is the responsibility of those in authority to follow the rules even as we seek to enforce them. We cannot make things up as we go along and we trust that the competitors, bettors, and fans will understand the importance of adhering to that principle."

Medina Spirit's presence in the Preakness will likely result in more public interest in the second leg of the Triple Crown than if he had been on the sidelines.

Saturday's card at Pimlico drew 133 entries in 14 races.

The ongoing Pimlico meet operates under veterinary testing protocols established and overseen by Maryland Racing Commission equine medical director, Dr. Elizabeth Daniel. These protocols include horses on May 14-15 being subject to TCO2 testing, and out-of-competition testing can be administered at any time prior to and on race day.

Shortly after the draw, Rifkin and Dr. Dionne Benson, chief veterinary officer for TSG, spoke to the media about Medina Spirit's and Baffert's participation.

"TSG, as you all know, and MJC care deeply about the integrity of the sport, but that includes also the integrity of due process," Rifkin said.

Benson said multiple test samples have been collected, and results are expected Friday. She expressed confidence that the tests could indicate the possibility of a lingering presence of betamethasone.

"The very fact that we have three different time points will allow us to determine how the medication is moving through the horse," she said. "So the more information that we have will allow us to determine and predict, reasonably, where it will be on race day, and if it is even going to be close. Then we will enact our request for Mr. Baffert to scratch the horse." BH

COMMENTARY FROM INDUSTRY FIGURES

OUR VOICES

ENOUGH ALREADYBy Adam Wachtel

In the 1976 critically acclaimed movie Network, Howard Beale (masterfully played by Peter Finch)

ranted "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore."

I feel your pain Howard. For the past year or so, I've been writing articles for BloodHorse expressing my concern/dismay over the prevalence of cheating going on in our sport. I've mentioned my experiences with the Shady Characters in our sport going back decades from when I first got involved in horse racing as a teenager. There have always been some bad apples in the sport that not only give our sport black eyes but also take money out of the pockets of those of us that dedicate our lives to the sport we love and all of those we employ and who rely on the success of our stables. Mr. Beale, I am mad as hell and it's time for a change.

The problem is that with Bob Baffert's tremendous success as the most dominant Kentucky Derby-winning trainer of all time, Mr. Baffert has become the face of our sport. And when he has drug positives it catches

the attention of everyone. Our sport has enough problems from a public relations standpoint. The last thing we need right now is to have a tainted result in the Kentucky Derby itself. I've personally received texts and calls from friends and family who really know very little about our sport asking me if the Derby winner was really drugged.

Isn't it a shame that this is the post-Derby focus?I'm not writing this to single out Bob Baffert. I'm

not a judge or jury and as a lawyer I do believe in due process. I'm writing this in my continuing attempt to bring attention to the fact that our sport needs to clean up its act. If you think that all of our horses are playing on an even playing field you are kidding yourselves. If you think that as you're reading this there isn't a horse running somewhere that is running after being administered an illegal drug, or who just got a milkshake, or who was injected five days ago instead of 14 or who was shockwaved yesterday, or who was blood "doped," then I have some oil wells in Vermont I'd like to sell you. I am willing to bet there are trainers

complicit with their veterinarians who are involved in such acts. I hold them responsible for tarnishing the sport I have dedicated my life to.

Enough already.Clean up your acts, follow the rules and see if you

can compete on an even playing field. If not, find something else to do.

Let's not just call out the trainers and veterinarians. As I've stated in previous articles, I also feel my fellow owners have a responsibility to not bury their heads in the sand. If your trainer is moving up horses 10 lengths over his competitors, there's probably something amiss. There are no magic beans.

I was recently talking with one of the most accomplished Eclipse Award-winning trainers in the sport who said to me "…it's not rocket science … I'm far from unique…"

As I look at Ragozin Sheets on an almost daily basis, I see in quantifiable data how horses perform when going from one barn to another. The sheets don't lie.

Most horses in moving from barn to barn perform

somewhat predictably. Are there trainers that seem to get better results than others? Of course. But, then there are trainers who get results that are difficult to explain when you see them move up horse after horse. Are they that much more talented than everyone else at their craft? Maybe they do have magic beans or a magic veterinarian.

Those of us that campaign horses around the country hear all of the rumors about this trainer or that trainer or their veterinarians. Last year, we all read about those that were indicted for doing exactly what I'm writing about. In their cases, the sheets of their horses certainly suggested some highly unusual results. They'll have their day in court as they are entitled to have. I can tell you that currently I see similar results around the country from other barns. It saddens me that this exists and it angers me that the racing authorities don't seem to be able to put a stop to it. However, I have hope.

I do believe that in several of our most important jurisdictions there are efforts underway to address what seems so obvious to those of us really paying attention. I think those trainers and veterinarians that are intentionally breaking the rules had better beware. The days of taking an edge may be coming to an end.

Maybe the next ones to be indicted will be forced to exit our sport.

In writing articles on this topic over the past year I was amazed by how many people reached out to me in response. For the most part, the comments were very positive and complimentary. Sometimes the messages were from prominent people in the sport I didn't even know personally. That was gratifying. It reinforced what I already believed that there are many others in our sport that feel as

strongly about this topic as I feel. On the other hand, some of the responses were more critical. I was asked why I didn't call out certain owners who seem to give horses to our most controversial trainers time and time again. Others asked me about my own trainers and their integrity. I've been fortunate enough to win some big races along the way and campaign some top horses. Maybe my trainers are Shady Characters who don't follow the rules was the suggestion. All I can say in defense of such statements is that I obviously don't believe that to be the case. Any barn can make a mistake. Nobody is perfect. Having said that, if any of my trainers were to in my view become one of the bad actors who on even an occasional basis have horses that tested positive for banned substances, I would move my horses out of that barn. I cannot recall any of my horses being DQ'd for such reasons in 20 years or longer of racehorse ownership.

I do not want to be one of those guys who has to defend one of my trainers for regularly breaking the rules and juicing my horses. I'll continue to try and win races the right way and hope that I can avoid running against horses that are running on magic beans whenever possible. BH

BAFFERT: OINTMENT COULD HAVE CAUSED DERBY DRUG POSITIVEBy Frank Angst and Byron King

Trainer Bob Baffert issued a statement via his attorney May 11 suggesting Medina Spirit's post-race positive

test for betamethasone in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) may have been the result of exposure from an ointment that was applied to the colt for dermatitis.

Pending the results of a split sample test for the corticosteroid, the Derby winner faces possible disqualification from the May 1 race. Betamethasone, primarily administered to horses in joint injections, is a Class C drug that is allowed in Kentucky as a therapeutic, but state rules require at least a 14-day withdrawal time before racing and any level of detection on race day is a violation.

Authorities noted that even under the scenario outlined Tuesday by Baffert, the trainer could still face sanctions and the owner could still see the horse disqualified. Racing rules require the trainer to be absolutely responsible for the horse's condition on race day, meaning they need to be aware of the drugs administered to their horse relative to the rules.

According to Baffert, his staff began treating Medina Spirit with Otomax, an anti-fungal ointment, on the suggestion of his veterinarian to treat dermatitis on the colt's hind end that developed after his runner-up finish in the Runhappy Santa Anita Derby (G1) early last month. He did not realize the ointment contained betamethasone until May 10, soon after he began an

investigation into what might have led to the positive test."On May 9, 2021, I held a press conference in which

I stated that I intended to thoroughly investigate how this could have happened and that I would be completely transparent throughout the process," Baffert said in Tuesday's statement distributed by his lawyer, Craig Robertson. "I immediately began that investigation, which has resulted in me learning of a possible source for the betamethasone, and now, as promised, I want to be forthright about what I have learned.

"Following the Santa Anita Derby, Medina Spirit developed dermatitis on his hind end. I had him checked out by my veterinarian who recommended the use of an anti-fungal ointment called Otomax. The veterinary recommendation was to apply this ointment daily to give the horse relief, help heal the dermatitis, and prevent it from spreading. My barn followed this recommendation and Medina Spirit was treated with Otomax once a day up until the day before the Kentucky Derby. Yesterday, I was informed that one of the substances in Otomax is betamethasone. While we do not know definitively that this was the source of the alleged 21 picograms (per milliliter of blood or plasma) found in Medina Spirit's post-race blood sample, and our investigation is continuing, I have been told by equine pharmacology experts that this could explain the test results. As such, I wanted to be forthright about this fact as soon as I learned of this information."

According to the Merck Animal Health website, Otomax is advertised as a treatment for canines for acute and chronic otitis externa. Merck's website prominently indicates the gel contains betamethasone valerate among

its active ingredients.Medina Spirit's owner, Amr Zedan

of Zedan Racing Stables, released the following statement Tuesday: "Bob Baffert reported today that a topical ointment that was recommended and dispensed by an equine veterinarian to treat a skin rash appearing on the hips of Medina Spirit may have been the contaminant source leading to the post-race positive following Medina Spirit's Kentucky Derby victory. I have reviewed the picture of the rash and fully understand the need for care and the

good faith intentions in using the ointment supplied by the veterinarian. I want to express my full trust and support for Bob Baffert as we cheer on Medina Spirit in the 146th running of the Preakness this weekend."

The Racing Medication and Testing Consortium is the industry group that helps shape medication and testing policies. RMTC executive director and COO Mary Scollay noted that details like the ones Baffert released Tuesday about the application of the ointment could mitigate sanctions for a trainer but she noted the trainer is still ultimately responsible for what's in a horse's system on race day.

"If the stewards feel that he had made a legitimate effort to understand the treatments the horse was receiving or they determined the veterinarian did not sufficiently disclose information, they could mitigate penalties, but that doesn't negate the finding," Scollay said.

In terms of mitigating circumstances, such a situation played out with two Baffert-trained horses who tested positive for lidocaine after racing May 2, 2020, at Oaklawn Park: Charlatan in a division of the Arkansas Derby (G1) and eventual champion female sprinter Gamine in an allowance-level race. The stewards initially had disqualified both horses from victory and suspended Baffert for 15 days.

But in a decision last month, the Arkansas Racing Commission reinstated the wins and changed Baffert's penalty to a fine of a total of $10,000 after arguments were made during a two-day hearing that the positives could have been caused by environmental contamination. Testimony noted a pain patch worn by a Baffert assistant. Also, documents were presented showing one other horse from Charlatan's race tested positive for lidocaine, although at a level below the threshold.

It should be noted that concerns about possible environmental contamination are different than what Baffert outlined Tuesday, when he said Medina Spirit was treated with an ointment that contained betamethasone.

Besides being sanctioned for those two Oaklawn Park positives, in January Baffert was fined $1,500 after Gamine tested positive for betamethasone after running third in the 2020 Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1). Gamine

was disqualified and placed last, costing owner Michael Lund Petersen $120,000 in earnings.

Last November Baffert was fined $2,500 after then 3-year-old Merneith tested positive for the medication dextromethorphan in a post-race test taken after the filly finished second in the fourth race July 25 at Del Mar. Initially after that finding, Baffert's attorney suggested that positive may have been a case of environmental contamination linked to a groom taking cough medicine.

Ed Martin is president of the Association of Racing Commissioners International, the umbrella regulatory group of state racing regulators. Martin has grown tired of both the positives and the excuses.

"As the facts now stand, the substance was in the horse at a level it should not have been," Martin said in a May 10 statement. "The Kentucky commission is investigating and will take appropriate action based on the facts of the case as they develop."

In November, following the positive drug tests for Charlatan, Gamine, and Merneith, Baffert announced plans to increase scrutiny and security measures around his barns. At that time, Baffert announced the retention of Dr. Michael Hore of Hagyard Equine Medical Institute "to add an additional layer of protection to ensure the well-being of horses in my care and rule compliance."

In an interview following Tuesday's statement, Robertson declined to name the veterinarian that Baffert's statement indicated as recommending the use of the ointment.

BLOODHORSE DAILY PAGE 14 OF 34WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, 2021

"I don’t know that I want to answer that question. I don’t want to be perceived as me or Bob throwing that veterinarian under the bus," Robertson said.

Asked if Hore had cleared the use of Otomax, he replied: "I don't know that the veterinarian that recommended it consulted Dr. Hore."

Hore didn't immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.

According to Robertson, Hore had told Baffert last year that betamethasone was not to be used "in any way, shape, or form" after Gamine tested positive for the medication after the Oaks.

Baffert said on Sunday that Gamine was injected with betamethasone 18 days before the Oaks, outside the 14-day withdrawal guideline.

"As I have stated, my investigation is continuing and we do not know for sure if this ointment was the cause of the test results, or if the test results are even accurate, as they have yet to be confirmed by the split sample," Baffert's Tuesday statement continued. "However, again, I have been told that a finding of a small amount, such as 21 picograms, could be consistent with application of this type of ointment. I intend to continue to investigate and I will continue to be transparent."

Scollay noted that horsemen routinely bring up the precise levels of testing. She said it's important to remember that the 21 picograms referenced is just from one milliliter of blood. There are 1,000 milliliters in a liter of blood and about 55 liters of blood in a Thoroughbred.

"So the minimum amount of drugs in the body is 21 picograms times 55,000," Scollay said. "And we're just talking about the amount of drug in the blood. We don't know how much drug has entered the muscles, the other tissues—left the blood and entered other spaces in the body that we don't measure."

Used to treat pain and inflammation, betamethasone is a corticosteroid that typically is administered through an injection. Kentucky is in line with the industry trend of tightening restrictions for corticosteroids by pushing back the withdrawal time for which they can be administered to 14 days before a race, up from the

previous seven days. There is no acceptable threshold."I want to reiterate two points I made when this matter

initially came to light," Baffert continued in his statement. "First, I had no knowledge of how betamethasone could have possibly found its way into Medina Spirit (until now) and this has never been a case of attempting to game the system or get an unfair advantage. Second, horse racing must address its regulatory problem when it comes to substances which can innocuously find their way into a horse's system at the picogram (which is a trillionth of a gram) level. Medina Spirit earned his Kentucky Derby win and my pharmacologists have told me that 21 picograms of betamethasone would have had no effect on the outcome of the race. Medina Spirit is a deserved champion and I will continue to fight for him."

If Medina Spirit's follow-up split-sample test confirms the presence of betamethasone, Kentucky rules authorize disqualification of the horse and penalties toward Baffert, absent mitigating circumstances.

A disqualification would result in Juddmonte's Mandaloun being awarded victory in the Kentucky Derby. He crossed the wire second, a half-length behind Medina Spirit. BH

SPENDTHRIFT FARM PULLS FOLLOWING SEA FROM BAFFERTBy BloodHorse Staff

Spendthrift Farm's Following Sea, a second-out maiden winner at Oaklawn Park April 10 for

trainer Bob Baffert, is one of a handful of horses the farm intends to transfer away from the Hall of Fame trainer, according to a report in Daily Racing Form.

The Form wrote that Following Sea would join trainer Todd Pletcher in New York and that four 2-year-olds the farm has on the West Coast with Baffert would be moved, most likely going to trainer Richard Mandella.

Following Sea had been considered a prospective starter for the May 15 Chick Lang Stakes (G3) at Pimlico Race Course before the latest barn change. The move came after the announcement of the Baffert-trained Medina Spirit testing positive for betamethasone after his victory in the May 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) at Churchill Downs.

Teaming with Baffert, Spendthrift and co-owners MyRaceHorse Stable, Madaket Stables, and Starlight Racing won the 2020 Derby last year with Authentic. The colt went on to win the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). Named Horse of the Year in 2020, Authentic currently stands at Spendthrift for $75,000.

"Given the circumstances, we thought it was best to hit the pause button," Ned Toffey, general manager of Spendthrift Farm, told Daily Racing Form about the farm's relationship with Baffert.

Reached by BloodHorse, Toffey confirmed the accuracy of the report but otherwise declined to comment. BH

MEDINA SPIRIT, CONCERT TOUR GET FIRST LOOK AT PIMLICOBy Bob Ehaltt @BobEhalt

About eight hours before the May 11 post position draw for the 146th Preakness Stakes (G1), it

seemed like any other morning four days before the second jewel of the Triple Crown.

Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) winner Medina Spirit had a leisurely one-mile jog while traveling the opposite way around Pimlico Race Course.

He was followed by trainer Bob Baffert's other starter in the May 15 classic for 3-year-olds, Gary and Mary West's Concert Tour, who mirrored Medina Spirit's morning exercise.

Of course, traveling the wrong way seemed apropos Tuesday considering this edition the Preakness will unfold like none other since 1968.

In the aftermath of the May 9 bombshell that Zedan Racing Stables' Medina Spirit had tested positive for the corticosteroid betamethasone and could be stripped of his victory in the Run for the Roses, calling

someone a Kentucky Derby winner seems speculative until the results of a split-sample are announced and a final ruling is rendered.

It was the first positive drug test for a Kentucky Derby winner since the 1968 edition when Dancer's Image was ultimately disqualified after a lengthy court battle.

Though Churchill Downs barred Baffert from entering horses at the Louisville track, as of Tuesday morning there was no official word from Maryland Jockey Club officials that Medina Spirit or Concert Tour, who did not run in the Kentucky Derby, would be blocked from racing in Saturday's classic.

Baffert has said that Medina Spirit was not treated with betamethasone.

Later Tuesday morning, Baffert announced that Medina Spirit had dermatitis on his hind end prior to the Kentucky Derby and was treated with an anti-fungal ointment, Otomax. Baffert said he has been informed that one of the

substances in Otomax is betamethasone. In the meantime, with Baffert in Kentucky,

assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes reported that both Medina Spirit and Rebel Stakes (G2) winner Concert Tour returned from their first visit to the Pimlico track in fine shape.

"They had a long travel day (Monday from Kentucky). They handled the trip very well. We're here early. It's Tuesday, so we just gave them a jog day today and we'll gallop tomorrow," Barnes said. "Everyone looks wonderful. Couldn't be happier."

Barnes said Medina Spirit, a son of Protonico, has displayed no ill effects from his gate-to-wire victory in the 1 1/4-mile Kentucky Derby.

"Medina Spirit feels very good. He had high energy this morning. I think he looks great," Barnes said. "You never know how much (the Derby) took out of him. He certainly wasn't tired afterwards. We've had other horses who would lay down for a couple of days afterwards but he was on his toes and ate his feed."

Concert Tour, a Street Sense colt, sat out the Kentucky Derby after finishing third in the Arkansas Derby (G1) as a 3-10 favorite, suffering his first loss in four career starts.

"He had two hard races (at Oaklawn Park) and it always helps to have some extra weeks between races," Barnes said. "He's a light horse, so he's got his weight picked back up and his energy level is great. He should be a fresh horse. That was the idea of skipping (the Derby). You get two more weeks and

you have a little fresher horse."The morning activities also included a 1 1/2-mile

gallop by Preakness candidate Ram."He went well. Everything is good. I let him

breeze a little bit in the stretch so he could catch his stride," trainer D. Wayne Lukas said.

An American Pharoah ridgling owned by Christina Baker and William Mack, Ram entered the Preakness picture after notching an allowance win on the May 1 Kentucky Derby Day undercard at Churchill Downs.

RESTRICTIONS LIFTED FOR HORSES ENTERING KY FROM MDBy BloodHorse Staff

Horses entering Kentucky from Maryland that meet standard health requirements are now

allowed unrestricted entry, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture announced May 10.

The lifting of restrictions benefits Kentucky-based horses shipping to Maryland for this weekend's Preakness Stakes (G1) and supporting races at Pimlico Race Course. Movement of horses entering Kentucky from Laurel Park or Pimlico had been restricted due to the equine herpesvirus type 1 outbreak that occurred in Maryland beginning in March. Prior approval from the state veterinarian was required for horses entering Kentucky from the Maryland tracks.

"Effective Monday, May 10, Kentucky Department of Agriculture's Office of State Veterinarian rescinds restrictions on horses originating from both Pimlico and Laurel," read an alert posted by the Equine Disease Communication Center from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. "All horses from these facilities that meet the standard health requirements for Kentucky tracks

and training centers (including EHV-1 vaccination, 72-hour Certificate of Veterinary Inspection, and valid negative EIA test) will be allowed unrestricted entry."

The $1 million Preakness for 3-year-olds is the centerpiece of 15 stakes races, nine of which are graded, that will take place at Pimlico Friday and Saturday. The Preakness, the second jewel of the Triple Crown, will anchor Saturday's program. Friday's program will be highlighted by the $250,000 George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) for 3-year-old fillies. BH

SOLD OUT BECOMES JAVA'S WAR'S FIRST WINNERBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Grade 1 winner and second-crop sire Java's War sired his first winner May

8 when his 2-year-old son Sold Out won his debut by eight lengths at Camarero Race Track.

Sent off as the second choice in a field of 7, Sold Out tracked the pace before seizing the lead turning for home and drawing away. He clocked the five furlongs on the main track in 1.00.44.

Bred in Kentucky by Charles Fipke, Sold Out is out of the Perfect Soul winner Belle Soul, who is the dam of Peruvian group 1 winner Quinta Nota (by Tale of Ekati). The colt was sold by Paramount Sales for $18,000 to owner Willie Concepcion at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale. Sold Out is trained by Eric Betancourt.

Belle Soul has a yearling full brother to Sold Out. She did not have a foal this year.

Java's War is a Fipke homebred by War Pass who became a stakes winner and grade 1-placed at 2, with a third-place finish in the Dixiana Breeders' Futurity (G1). At 3, he was runner-up in the Tampa Bay

Derby (G2) before winning the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1). He retired with a 3-2-1 record from 19 starts and earned $713,807.

Java's War entered stud at Colebrook Farms Stallion Station in 2017 and spent two years standing at Darby Dan Farm near Lexington. He now stands for a private fee at Equiprovet Canada in Brantford, Ont., according to the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society. BH

MORE THAN READY COLT SHINES AT MIDLANTIC BREEZE SHOWBy Christine Osert @BH_COser

A More Than Ready colt consigned by Kirkwood Stables, agent, breezed the fastest quarter-mile

May 11 to highlight the first of three days of the under tack show for the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale.

Breezing over the dirt track at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md., the dark bay or brown colt (Hip 166) worked in :21 2/5. He failed to meet his reserve in March as part of Kirkwood owner Kip Elser's "Gulfstream Gallop" program at The Gulfstream Sale, Fasig-Tipton's 2-year-olds in training sale in Florida, but Elser was pleased to see the colt flash his speed for buyers on Tuesday.

Elser began taking a group of 2-year-old gallopers to The Gulfstream Sale in 2018. The sale was not held in 2020 due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We were just starting to get some momentum and get people to really pay attention to it (the Gulfstream Gallop) and have some faith in it when we had to take

a year off. I was disappointed but not surprised. It's an education process," Elser said Tuesday. "This will probably help. We're showing horses that can go fast, we're just choosing not to at that stage.

"There's no question. He's a fast horse."Hip 166 was bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet

Stables out of the grade 3-winning Forestry mare Separate Forest. He is a half brother to Hendy Woods, who last year won the Indiana Grand Stakes and was second in the Edgewood Stakes Presented by Forcht Bank (G2T).

Elser bought the colt under the Gulfstream Gallop banner for $75,000 out of the Summerfield consignment to the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale, with WinStar Farm stallion More Than Ready playing an important role.

"There's 200 plus stakes winners all over the world in his career. What's not to like about him? He's just been a phenomenal sire all the way," Elser said of More Than Ready. "I've loved him for a long time. I bet on him the day he broke his maiden for Todd (Pletcher) at Keeneland. He's a wonderful, wonderful horse."

Elser said Hip 166 also reminded him of another More Than Ready colt he had purchased with trainer

Dallas Stewart for the late Tom Benson—the multiple graded stakes winner and millionaire Tom's Ready.

Hip 166 was a $115,000 RNA at The Gulfstream Sale, where he galloped, and Elser noted that buyers at juvenile sales want to buy the fast breezers.

"I didn't necessarily expect him to be the fastest of the day but I knew he'd breeze well," Elser said. "We had him in Miami and he galloped well, but he was in the gallop group down there and did not get enough response. So we took him home, gave him a couple weeks off, and breezed him a couple times.

"I think an awful lot of him, I did earlier in the year, and I believe I'm right."

Two juveniles shared the fastest eighth-mile time Tuesday of :10—Hip 109, an Empire Maker filly consigned by McKathan Brothers Sales, agent, and Hip 164, a Malibu Moon colt offered by Eddie Woods, agent.

The Empire Maker filly was bred in Kentucky by Gainesway TB's, Brian Graves, Neil Howard, Passerellos, and Sheerwater. She is out of the Deputy Minister mare Pontiana, who also produced multiple stakes-placed and six-figure earner Addibel Lightning. Her second dam is two-time Ballerina Handicap (G1) winner Shine Again.

New Day Training purchased the bay filly for $125,000 from Gainesway's consignment to the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale.

The Malibu Moon colt was bred in Kentucky by Castleton Lyons and Kilboy Estate from the Seeking the Gold mare Seeking Atlantis. He is a half brother to grade 3-placed winner Seeking Her Glory and multiple stakes-placed winner Castellani. His second dam is the

multiple grade 3 winner Atlantic Ocean, who produced grade 3 winner Converge.

The bay colt was a $135,000 RNA when consigned by Paramount Sales to the 2020 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale.

Elser said he was pleased, as always, with the track throughout the day.

"They do a great job with the surface here. It's a great crew. They know their surface," he said. "One of

the things that helped today was they cut back the numbers in each set to 22. Everybody got a fresh racetrack no matter what set you were in. This colt (Hip 166) went relatively late in the day and he had the same racetrack that everybody did all day long."

The under tack show will resume Wednesday at 8 a.m. ET. The auction will take place May 17-18, only a couple days after the May 15 Preakness Stakes (G1) held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. BH

THUNDERELLO DIES DUE TO COLIC AT 22By Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Grade 1-placed stakes winner and Canadian sire Thunderello died May 5 due to colic on a farm

near Amherstburg, Ont., owned by Charles Mady, who raced the son of Montbrook. Thunderello was 22.

Thunderello was a fleet-footed sprinter who had three wins and three seconds out of seven lifetime starts that included a runner-up finish in the 2002 NAPA Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) to Orientate at Arlington International Racecourse.

"He was the kindest, most intelligent horse that any owner could be blessed with," said Mady. "He was truly my hero and will be missed greatly by the entire family."

Bred in Florida by Four Horsemen's Ranch, Thunderello is out of the In Reality daughter and multiple stakes producer On the Square. Prominent bloodstock agent Buzz Chace bought colt for $47,000 as a yearling at the 2000 Ocala Breeders' Sales August Select Sale of Yearlings for West Point Thoroughbreds. Thunderello was offered again by M & H Training and Sales at the OBS March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, where agent Brian Morgan bought him for $175,000 on Mady's behalf.

Trained by Scott Lake for all but his first start, Thunderello was second in his debut at 2 at Saratoga Race Course to Mayakovsky, who set a 5 1/2-furlong track record of 1:03.32 in the race. Thunderello became

a winner in his next start, winning by 14 1/4 lengths at Saratoga and finishing only a quarter of a second off Mayakovsky's record. The colt was a close second in his debut at 3 and followed with two wins by a combined 5 1/2 lengths, which included a victory in the Gallant Bob Handicap. He went on to the Breeders' Cup, where he led the field through blistering early fractions of :21.53 and :43.91. With a furlong to run, Thunderello was a length in front of favorite Orientate and holding tough, but Orientate surged in the final strides to win by half a length.

Thunderello made his last start in the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes (G1) during which he tore a ligament and had to be pulled up. He was retired with $388,400 in career earnings.

Windmill Manor Farm bought Thunderello for stud duty and stood him at Walmac Farm near Lexington his first year at stud. He later stood at Sugar Maple Farm in New York, Diamond F Ranch in California, and Milestone Farm in Kentucky. Mady repurchased Thunderello in 2011 and relocated him to Ontario.

As a stallion, Thunderello sired 99 winners from 134 runners. His top performers included multiple graded stakes winner Monterey Jazz, who set a one-mile track record of 1:32.59 in a turf allowance race at Hollywood Park before winning the American Handicap (G2T) by 3 1/4 lengths. He also won the Sir Beaufort Stakes (G3T) at 3, and the Strub Stakes (G2) and Texas Mile Stakes (G3) at 4. Thunderello also sired multiple stakes winner Thunders Dove. BH

Mother Earth will bid to become the first filly since Special Duty in 2010 to do the

English-French One Thousand Guineas double after Aidan O'Brien revealed she is set to take her chance in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (G1) at ParisLongchamp May 16 with Christophe Soumillon booked to ride.

Special Duty, incredibly, was awarded her two Guineas in the stewards' room after she passed the post second on both occasions but was promoted when Jacqueline Quest and Liliside were disqualified.

O'Brien, whose only French One Thousand Guineas success came with Rose Gypsy in 2001, issued an upbeat bulletin on Mother Earth's well-being following her one-length victory in the May 2 QIPCO One Thousand Guineas (G1) at Newmarket under Frankie Dettori.

The trainer said May 11: "At the moment Mother Earth is heading to France and Christophe Soumillon will ride her. She won nicely at Newmarket and we were delighted with her there.

"We haven't done a whole lot with her since Newmarket, but she seems to have come out of the race very well. She was always a very good filly and had some lovely runs at 2. She wintered well and seems to be progressing all the time. She will be our only runner in the race."

O'Brien is seeking a fifth success in the French Two Thousand Guineas (Poule d'Essai des Poulains, G1) following the victories of Landseer (2002), Aussie Rules (2006), Astronomer Royal (2007), and The Gurkha (2016) and Pierre Charles-Boudot has been booked to ride St Mark's Basilica (FR), who sidestepped Newmarket to wait for Longchamp.

O'Brien said: "St Mark's Basilica runs in the French Two Thousand Guineas and Pierre-Charles will ride. He seems to be in very good form and we've been very happy with everything he has done of late."

The son of Siyouni won the Darley Dewhurst Stakes (G1) last October after a third-place effort in the Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes (G1).

FAHEY SADDLES 3,000TH BRITISH WINNERBy Maddy Playle/Racing Post

Richard Fahey trained his 3,000th winner in Britain May 11 as Hong

Kong Harry stormed home to take a seven-furlong handicap at Ayr Racecourse, with stablemate Galipoli finishing second.

Fahey has been responsible for group 1 winners Ribchester and Mayson among many others and reached the landmark with jockey Paul Hanagan in the saddle.

Fahey said: "I would never have dreamed of reaching 3,000 winners when I started out, to have had 30 would have been enough back then!

"However, I'm obviously delighted to have reached such a fantastic milestone now and the credit must go to all my team as I wouldn't have been able to do it without them."

The Yorkshire-based trainer added: "If I had to pick one highlight, it would have to be Ribchester breaking the track record in the Queen Anne Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot, it doesn't get much better than that!"

Hanagan, who has played a key role in much of the trainer's success, said: "I joined Richard when I was 17 years old and we have both grown together ever since,

enjoying some fantastic days and moments together."There is no way I would have been able to

achieve what I have achieved in my career, for example the two champion jockey titles, if it weren't for Richard.

"We have become great friends and I'm over the moon for him to have reached this fantastic milestone."

KINGMAN A RISING STAR IN STALLION RANKSBy Alan Portert @pedigreeconsult

There are few faster rising young stallions anywhere in the world than Kingman, and at the weekend

he added another chapter to the success story when Schnell Meister became the first group/grade 1 winner from his third crop with a victory in Japan's NHK Mile Cup (G1).

The victory, which saw Schnell Meister deliver a furious late run from deep in the field, was achieved in a very rapid 1:31.6, just 0.2 seconds off the stakes record. This was just the fourth start for Schnell Meister, who won a newcomers race and an allowance contest in two starts at 2, and had taken second in the Hochi Hai Yayoi Sho Deep Impact Kinen (G2) on his only previous outing this term.

Schnell Meister's victory means that Kingman has already sired group or grade 1 winners in four different countries, and group and graded winners in seven. So far, there have been 15 stakes winners, five group or graded, in Kingman's first crop, 14, nine group or graded in his second, and six, three group or graded, in his third crop, now just 3. In addition to Schnell Meister, the most notable of these includes champion European older miler Persian King, successful in six group races, including the Emirates Poule d'Essai des

Poulains (French Two Thousand Guineas, G1), Prix d'Ispahan (G1), and Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (G1); Palace Pier, whose successes include the St. James's Palace Stakes (G1) and Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois (G1); and Domestic Spending, who has captured the Hollywood Derby (G1T) and Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic Stakes (G1T).

While the measure of success that Kingman has been truly remarkable, there is no doubt that all the credentials for success were present when he retired to stud at Juddmonte Farms, Cheveley, Newmarket. Unbeaten in two start as a juvenile, including a win in the Betfred Mobile Solario Stakes (G3), Kingman opened his 3-year-old season with a 4 1/2-length victory over Night of Thunder (himself now a very successful young stallion) in the Aon Greenham Stakes (G3). Night of Thunder surprisingly reversed that defeat by a margin of a half-length in the QIPCO

Two Thousand Guineas (G1), perhaps due to Kingman's formidable finishing burst having been deployed a little early. Kingman rebounded from that upset to complete his career with triumphs in the Tattersalls Irish Two Thousand Guineas (G1); the St. James's Palace Stakes, by 2 1/4 lengths over Night of Thunder; the QIPCO Sussex Stakes (G1); and the Jacques le Marois.

Kingman's pedigree is no less impressive than his race record. He is by Green Desert's son, Invincible Spirit,

himself an extremely successful sire, and responsible for another exceptional stallion in Australia's I Am Invincible. The dam of Kingman, Zamindar mare, Zenda, won the Gainsborough Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French One Thousand Guineas, G1), and is half sister to Kingman's stud companion Oasis Dream—a son of Invincible Spirit's sire, Green Desert—who was a champion at 2 and 3 in Europe, and another very good stallion.

Although bred by the Japanese entity, Northern Farm, Schnell Meister was foaled in Germany. He is out of Serienholde (by the In the Wings horse, Soldier Hollow), who was a top-class runner in her native country winning the Henkel-Preis der Diana (German Oaks, G1) and BMW Preis Dusseldorf. Serienholde's dam, the stakes-placed Saldenehre, was a half sister to Saldenschwinge (by In the Wings, so closely related to Serienholde), a multiple group winner, and a high-weighted older mare in Germany. Saldenehre is also half sister to three other black-type winners, including Saldentigerin, a group-winning and group 1-placed mare, whose daughter Salomina, was undefeated in four starts at 3, including the Henkel-Preis der Diana-Deutsches Stuten-Derby (G1). Through Salomina, the family has already made an impact in Japan, her daughter Salacia winning the Ireland Trophy Fuchu Himba Stakes (G2), and taking second in two grade 1s, and her son, Salios, capturing the Asahi Hai Futurity (G1) at 2, and running second to Contail in last year's Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby, G1) and Satsuki Sho (Japanese Two Thousand Guineas, G1).

Schnell Meister's third dam, Salde, was also a stakes winner in Germany, and is dam of four stakes winners, including German champion, Saldenschwinge. Schnell Meister's seventh dam, Suleika, is also granddam of the Ever Ready Epsom Derby (G1) winner, Slip Anchor. She's also a granddaughter of Schwarzgold, winner of both the German Derby and Oaks, and regarded as one of the greatest, if not the greatest filly ever to race in that

country. Another famous descendant of Schwarzgold, Stacelita won six group and grade 1 races in France and the U.S., earning titles as champion 3-year-old in France and champion turf female in the U.S., and is dam of the Frankel daughter, Soul Stirring, champion of her generation in Japan at both 2 and 3.

Schnell Meister is one of five stakes winners by Kingman out of a Sadler's Wells line mare, the others including group 3 winner Boomer, out of a mare by Singspiel, the grandsire of the dam of Schnell Meister. There is a more interesting pattern at work here, though. Kingman's sire, Invincible Spirit, is by Green Desert (Danzig), a grandson of Northern Dancer out of a mare by Kris, a son of Sharpen Up, and Schnell Meister's broodmare sire, Soldier Hollow, is by a grandson of Northern Dancer out of a mare by a son of Kris.

Variations of this inbreeding to this Northern Dancer/Sharpen Up cross have proved remarkably successful for Kingman and we can also note that Persian King is out of a mare by Dylan Thomas, whose dam is a Northern Dancer/Sharpen Up cross, through Danzig and through Diesis, a brother to Kris; group 2 winner Elizabeth Tower is out of a mare by Doyen, who is by Sadler's Wells out of a mare by Kris; group 3 winner Chachnak and stakes winner Twist 'n' Shake are out of mares by Danehill Dancer, a Danzig/Sharpen Up cross; and the 2021 Epsom Blue Riband Trial Stakes winner Wirko, is out of a mare by Mount Nelson, a Danzig/Sharpen Up cross. My Grandfather introduced me to the races before I could walk. We’d spend magical time on the backstretch with the horses, trainers, jockeys, vets, and grooms. I became fascinated with the world.
