LOCKDOWN DRILL OVERVIEW

In a few minutes, you will practice a Lockdown Drill. While you are practicing, the Santa Ana School Police are practicing their response to an active shooter threat on the first, second and third floor of the Tower.

LOCKDOWN vs.SECURE CAMPUS

There are two types of emergencies that would lead us to lock down and/or secure the campus:

LOCKDOWN

A LOCKDOWN is called when there is an active threat ON CAMPUS (such as an armed threat).

During a LOCKDOWN, all rooms on campus are to be locked and secured, and students and staff should seek shelter in the safest possible part of the room. A lockdown applies to everyone on site.

SECURE CAMPUS

A SECURE CAMPUS is called when there is an active threat OFF CAMPUS (Such as an armed suspect loose in the neighborhood).

During a SECURE CAMPUS, all rooms on campus are to be locked and secured. Students and staff may go about their instructional day after securing doors.

LOCKDOWN PROCEDURESIf you are inside…

Lock all doors. Lower any shades or blinds, and turn off classroom lights.Students and teachers should silence all electronic devices.Place heavy objects in front of doors to barricade, if possible.Keep students and staff away from doors and windows and on floor.Move to a secure (concealed or walled) area of the building. If gunshot or explosion is heard, drop to the floor and seek cover.Move a telephone into the secure area and call 911 as soon as possible.Account for all students and staff. If possible, send email to administration regarding missing or injured students. Maintain a calm environment.Update locked down personnel at 5-10 minute intervals, as information is received from command or emergency personnel. If possible, monitor email and listen for announcements over PA.During an attack, if it easier or closer to escape campus and go to a more secure location, do so. If you leave campus, notify administration or Santa Ana School Police, or Santa Ana Police as soon as possible.

LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES

If you are outside…

Duck and cover to the ground immediately; face down, as flat as possible. If within 15-20 feet of a safe location, duck and run for safety using a zig-zag motion.Try to get behind or inside a building when you deem it safe.When you reach a relatively safe area, stay down and don’t move. Do not peek or raise your head.During an attack, if it easier or closer to escape campus and go to a more secure location, do so, do not spend time looking for an open room. If you leave campus, notify administration or Santa Ana School Police, or Santa Ana Police as soon as possible.

At all times during emergency, try to monitor your email. Front Office Staff will attempt to make updates either via email or announcements at 5-10 minute intervals.

Follow all instructions that come from emergency personnel.

SECURE CAMPUS PROCEDURES

A SECURE CAMPUS is called when there is an active threat OFF CAMPUS.

During a SECURE CAMPUS, all rooms on campus are to be locked and secured. Students and staff may go about their instructional day after securing doors.

SECURE CAMPUS PROCEDURES

If you are inside…

Lock all doors.Keep students and staff away from doors and windows.Account for all students and staff. Notify administration via email (send pdf version of emergency accountability report) of any student currently outside of your building and their location if you are aware of it. Maintain a calm environment, but continue with your classroom routine.Stay where you are until instructed otherwise by command or emergency personnel, even if the school/work day is over.Guard outside exits to prevent anyone from leaving the building.Monitor email and listen for announcements over PA.

SECURE CAMPUS PROCEDURES

If you are outside…

Proceed immediately to the nearest secure area.Remain there until instructed otherwise by command or emergency personnel, even if the school/work day is over.Do not leave campus.
