HONEYWOOD - The Port Carling Thunder Joe Walker Plumbing Juveniles finished off the pre- Christmas schedule with two games on the road. On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the Thunder made a two-hour trip to Honeywood, deep in the wilds of Dufferin County for a 7 p.m. game. The Thunder started with seven skaters against a full opposition bench. The thin red line killed two penalties and held the line until the reserves arrived six minutes into the game. With three extra skaters, the Thunder controlled the majority of the play and had Honeywood penned in when a bad bounce allowed the home town team to score with 54 seconds left in the first period. Honeywood opened the second with another goal and then capitalized on a third when the Thunder ran into some penalty problems. Port answered back with a shot that was clearly in to all but the most important person on the ice. What could have given the team a lift turned into another piece of frustration. In the third, Honeywood added one more before Port Carling finished off the scoring. Ryan Knight bullied his way into the Honeywood end. Rob Childs picked up the puck on the boards and then fed the puck back to Dan Wray for a sizzler from the point. The Thunder more than held their own throughout the game but the bounces went the other way. The game ended 4-1 and was only the fourth loss of the season for the Thunder. On Friday, Dec. 21 the team had another two-hour drive, this time to Meaford for a 9:30 a.m. start. Once again the team had a short bench with only nine skaters – one short of two full lines. The Thunder took control right from the opening whistle and wouldn’t give the puck to Meaford for the first three minutes. Unfortunately, on their first foray into the Thunder end, Meaford put the puck in the net. The Thunder answered back with two. Lane Robinson won the draw in the Thunder end and sent Taum King cruising down the ice. Despite having a player draped all over him, Taum went for the net and scored on a beautiful five-hole shot. A couple of minutes later, Ryan Knight picked up the puck in the slot and passed it back to Dan Wray on the blue-line. Wray unleashed the slap shot and King redirected it for his second of the night. The second period was all Port Carling, but the puck wouldn’t go in. Time and again the puck would go off the post or just miss on the wide side. Even when short-handed, Port Carling kept control, never giving Meaford time to set anything up. On one short-handed situation, the Thunder, led by King and Lane Robinson, kept Meaford in their own end for nearly the whole two minutes. Meaford managed to tie it up in the first minute of the third. The Thunder rallied, kept control and hammered away but couldn’t find the touch. What could have been a blow-out in favour of Port Carling end in a 2-2 tie. Although the Thunder did not pick up a win on the road trip, they certainly played like the winning team they are. The first game was on Saturday afternoon, and Parry Sound gave up an early 1-0 lead before Cameron Marshall tied the game with a pretty, solo effort. Gravenhurst answered with a power play goal before Marshall scored his second of the period. Sloppy play in their zone lead to Gravenhurst’s third goal of the period, and gave the home side a 3-2 lead going into the second period. Parry Sound played excellent hockey in the second frame, but slowed down somewhat in the third, giving Gravenhurst the opportunity to extend their one goal lead. A couple of quick goals deflated any comeback homes for the visitors, and in the end, Parry Sound found themselves on the wrong end of an 8-2 decision. Sunday evening saw our bantams returning to Gravenhurst for the second game of the weekend series. With Parry Sound’s two regular goalies out of town for the holidays, Dylan Evoy made his goal tending debut and turned in an exciting performance with his inspired play. With their rookie goaltender between the pipes, Parry Sound picked up their defensive play, and kept in the game with goals from Aaron Barker, Josh Vanderwelle , Cameron Marshall and Daniel Nutter. With a depleted roster, Parry Sound tired in the third frame and got into penalty trouble, but continued to play hard against the talented Gravenhurst squad. The final score of 7-4 wasn’t indicative of the effort Parry Sound gave. After a well-earned holiday break, Parry Sound will host Bracebridge for a home game in MacTier at 8:10 p.m. on Jan. 9. Two tough losses for Ritchie bantams PARRY SOUND - The McNabb Lumber Minor Midgets managed to keep their undefeated streak going in their last three games this weekend. On Saturday, Dec. 22, the team faced Bracebridge at home. It was approximately at the halfway mark in the first period that things started to take off, and then there was no turning back. To start things off, there was a scramble in front of the net when Brendon McDougall gained control of the puck and shot to Jeff Cartwright, who put it in to score the first goal of the night. Then, less than a minute later, it was Zane Cox who lit up the board, assisted by Cam Moore. And then, with just over a minute left, Brandon Phillips dumped the puck in, where Joe Walker picked it up in the corner and passed it out in front of the net, where Cory Clatworthy was there to tip it in. But things didn't stop there. Just seconds into the second period, Jackson Kuhn got the puck from the face off, and passed it to Joe Walker, who then passed it up to Brendon McDougall, who skated up to put one in top shelf. Less than a minute later, Jeff Cartwright shot the puck up to Jordon Johnson who skated up on a two-on-one with teammate Cory Clatworthy, then passed it over in front of the net, where Clatworthy popped it in to score. A few minutes later, Bracebridge did get one past to score. With less than three minutes left, Parker Coulter passed the puck over to Cory Clatworthy, who fired a shot on net, but was blocked by the goalie, when Zane Cox skated in to pick up the rebound and score. Then, with 24 seconds left in the period, Brendon McDougall got the puck from the face-off and passed it out to Cory Clatworthy, who then took the shot and put it in through the goalie's legs to score, and give Clatworthy a hat trick. In the third period, both teams came out determined bantering back and forth, but with just one second left, Jeff Cartwright lit up the board once again, assisted by Brendon McDougall and Jordon Johnson, giving the team the win by a score of 8-1.
