Strong leaders, teachers and coaches are making intentional and purposeful decisions to integrate and teach mindful choices to build character and mental strength in our youth. Professional Learning Communities: Maximizing Collaboration to Support Learning and Instruction $30 Presenters: Brendan Quest & Diana Stein (NYC DOE) Professional Learning Communities (PLC's) create a collaborative community of educators focused on improving teacher practice and student learning outcomes in physical education and health education. During this intensive training workshop, participants will be lead through the development process of establishing a framework and implementation plan for physical and/or health education PLCs within their school/district. PLC Facilitation strategies and best practices will be modeled and shared. Barriers will be addressed, and potential solutions will be shared in order to provide participants the supports necessary to establish a collaborative learning community of educators within their school/district. 6 pm to 9 pm PE & Health Professional Certification (PEHPC) 104: Curriculum Development & Articulation $75 Presenter: Greg Warren (New Paltz CSD) During this intensive training workshop, directors and potential directors will be given a step-by-step process for developing and designing curriculum. The varying aspects of curriculum development and design will be shared to allow the attendee to determine their own particular situation and ultimately how to apply it. Session I: 7:30 am to 8:30 am Using Physical Education Technology Effectively Presenter: Chris Mekelburg (Rockville Centre UFSD) This presentation will focus on physical education technologies to improve MVPA and objective data collection. A review of data and how it can help drive the decision making process and curriculum development K-12. General Session: 8:40 am to 9:10 am Simultaneous Keynote Presentations: 9:20 am to 10:20 am

Dr. Hayley Watson - Dr Hayley Watson is a clinical psychologist with a PhD in bullying prevention. She has been creating and delivering intervention programs for youth and practitioners in the US, the UK, Canada and Australia for the past 15 years. She is the founder of Open Parachute - a video-based middle and high school mental health curriculum program that uses documentary stories of real teens sharing their experiences of overcoming struggle as a platform for building resilience and reducing stigma in students. She has a research partnership with Columbia University and her programs are being delivered in schools across the US, Canada, and Australia. Hayley runs teacher trainings all over the world to empower educators with practical tools for wellbeing and for managing student mental health and

behavior concerns in the classroom. First Deputy Chancellor Cheryl Watson-Harris - Cheryl Watson-Harris is First Deputy Chancellor within the New York City Department of Education. In this newly created role, Cheryl manages the Executive Superintendents while leading the support and supervision system to pursue the DOE's instructional vision. Before becoming First Deputy Chancellor, Cheryl served since 2017 as Senior Executive Director of the Office of Field Support. She is a New York City native and public school graduate who started her teaching career in 1993 at Brooklyn's PS 81, served as a principal in Boston for 15 years, and was a Network Superintendent for Boston Public Schools from 2013 to 2015. She rejoined the DOE in 2015 as the first Executive Director of the Brooklyn South Field Support Center.

Session II: 10:55 am to 12:05 pm State of Interscholastic Athletics: NYS Public High School Athletic Association Updates Presenter: Dr. Robert Zayas (NYS Public High School Athletic Association) During this session, a review of the current status of the state of Interscholastic Athletics will be provided. All new NYSPHSAA policies and regulations will be highlighted and clarified. Time will be provided for questions and answers. Understanding Aquatics for School Administrators Presenter: Marrick McDonald (Upstate Aquatics, LLC) Many schools have pools, however, school administrators may not have any knowledge about how to run a pool facility, especially a pool facility in an educational setting. This workshop is designed to provide a basic understanding of the NY Laws that govern pools, of the certifications required to operate a pool, and of best practices that are being used across the state. Participants will be provided with the free digital copy of the latest version of the Aquatic Guidebook for School Administrators. No swimming required. Session III: 12:15 pm to 1:25 pm Developing Physical Education Assessments Presenters: Ron Whitcomb (Victor CS, Retired), Gina Whitcomb (Rush-Henrietta SD, Retired) & Kelly Ahern (Victor CS) This presentation will be a combination of lecture and audience participation. The process of developing assessments from a well-articulated curriculum will be shared. Participants will engage in creating a unit to include targeted skills and corresponding assessments that address the cognitive social and affective domains. Practical tips for managing assessments in the instructional setting will be shared. Anne Mackey Luncheon: 1:30 pm to 2:20 pm Session IV: 2:30 pm to 3:40 pm New York State Physical Education Learning Standards 2.0 Presenters: Dr. Clancy Seymour (Canisius College) & Darryl Daily (NYS Education Department) Did you know that the New York State PE Learning Standards are in revision and soon to be complete? A collaboration between the New York State Education Department and NYS AHPERD that includes a diverse representation of PE professionals have assembled for over a year to complete this important task. Updates and progress will be shared and discussed. If You Build It, Will They Come? Presenters: Jana Moran, Dignorah Laporte & Elizabeth McSpedon (NYC Department of Education) How do you build and sustain an instructional program that earns the respect and buy in of your school and community stakeholders? Strategies for leveraging limited resources and personnel to develop tools and professional learning as well as to build a network of community partners to advocate for your program will be presented. Learn how the successes and lessons learned in program development and delivery in New York City can be applied in your district. Session V: 3:50 pm to 5:00 pm Mapping Out a Path to Meeting the NYS PE Mandates in an Urban School District Presenters: Benjamin Steuerwalt, April Wertheim, Dian Weismore & Meghan Goodness (Syracuse CSD) Join us as we highlight how one urban school district embarked on a mission to meet the New York State physical education mandates, specifically for the elementary grades. We will discuss in depth about how conducting an internal audit of the physical education program allowed for the department to construct a strategic plan that would address the importance of staffing, writing and implementing a rigorous curriculum, scheduling, collaboration and advocacy.

Dr Olajide Williams is Chief of Staff of the Department of Neurology and Associate Professor at Columbia University. He is also the head of Columbia University's Wellness Center and Medical Director of New York Presbyterian's Comprehensive Stroke Center, Columbia University campus. Dr Williams's research is focused on community-based behavioral interventions with an emphasis on therapeutic lifestyle programs (eating/exercise behaviors) and stroke disparities. He is an NIH-funded researcher with several R01-level awards, and leading health disparities expert. Dr Williams has authored numerous peer reviewed articles including the book "Stroke Diaries" and "Handbook of Neurological Therapeutics" both of which were published by Oxford University Press. As Founder of Hip Hop Public Health, Dr Williams targets economically disadvantaged urban environments through music, multimedia, and entertainment based programming in collaboration with music industry experts and artists. He has received numerous local, regional, national and international honors for his public health work, his scholarly activities, teaching, and his patient care, including a European Stroke Research Foundation Investigator of the Year award, Congressional "Rising Leader" Citation, New York State Proclamation, Columbia University Distinguished Teacher Award, American Heart

Association's Trailblazer award, and a National Humanism in Medicine award from the Association of American Medical Colleges. Dr Williams has been named on Fast Company Magazine's 100 Most Creative People list, Root 100's most influential Blacks in America list, Ad Age's Creative 50 list, BET's "A" list, and New York Magazine's Best Doctors list. He served on the American Heart Association's Founders Affiliate Board of Directors, and currently serves on the Board of the Partnership for a Healthier America. Exhibit Time: 10:10 am to 10:40 am Session VII: 10:45 am to 11:55 am Taking Steps for Developing a Mental Health Curriculum Presenter: Donna Videto (SUNY Cortland), Beth Dryer (TST BOCES), Dawn Kucerak (Trumansburg SD) The presentation will consist of a review of rubrics for conducting an audit of K-12 health curricula to determine alignment with the NYS Framework for Mental Health Education. A demonstration of how to use the rubrics and the role they play in curriculum development will be included. Attendees will receive a copy of the four grade band rubrics and an understanding of the steps necessary to determine how well a school or district is addressing the framework. What Do Physical Education Teachers Need From Their Directors of Physical Education and Athletics re: Leadership Presenters: Trevor Sousa, Kelly Ahern, Christine Phelps & Gina Potenza (Victor CS) This presentation will highlight the key leadership qualities that are most important to the physical education teachers they supervise. Specific examples will be provided regarding curriculum, instruction, assessments and programming. Also included will be how to build relationships with their staff.

Session VIII: 12:05 pm to 1:15 pm PE Instructional Coaching: Strategies for Implementing a Local Program Presenters: Luke Hollis, Jana Moran & Dignorah Laporte (NYC Department of Education) K-12 PE teachers can strengthen and enhance any component of their professional practice with PE Coaching, a new opportunity to work one-on-one with a PE Instructional Coach from the Office of School Wellness Programs. Participating teachers collaborate with their coach for up to 12 weeks to develop custom instructional strategies and goals that have a direct impact on student learning. The coach personalizes support for teachers’ needs, the unique elements of their PE program, and their school environment. Teachers receiving PE Coaching have seen immediate changes in classroom environment, student engagement, and the integration of new activities/units. In addition, participants receive guidance to support implementation of the NYC Physical Education Scope and Sequence. Starting a Relationship with SEL’s Presenters: Vanessa Figliozzi, Bradley Bond & Matthew Wechsler (NYC Department of Education) Physical Educators have a unique opportunity to immerse students in intentional learning experiences that develop social and emotional skills. Participants will learn strategies to create a safe and inclusive learning environment through physical activities that develop communication and cooperation skills to support students in establishing positive relationships. Through team-building and problem-solving activities, grouping and debriefing strategies, participants will experience the skills needed to establish effective communication in student interactions to create a supportive learning environment. Also the unique challenges will be shared. Finally, how do we program for physical education in an urban setting for the future. Staying Mentally Fit: A Call to Teachers and School Administrators Presenter: Dr. Kristie Lynch (Manhattanville College) Calling all health educators and school administrators! This session examines mental health and wellness activities for both health teachers and school administrators to incorporate into their daily lives and school environment.
