Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys, pre-senting sponsor of the 2019 Motor-cycles As Art Exhibition, reached out
with an invitation to this year’s entrants in a generous bid to have one lucky builder show their motorcycle around the country over the course of the next year. Russ Brown Motorcy-cle Attorneys have attractive displays and staff at virtually every significant motorcycle event
in the United States, so they offered to fea-ture a motorcycle chosen from the 2019 exhi-bition as representative of the builders, the machines, the art and the lifestyle that keeps biker blood flowing.
Over the next 12 months, owner Fabr-izo Caoduro from Venezuela, Italy, won’t be seeing his beautiful bike unless he chases it down as it skips its way around America.
The painstakingly built bike will be displayed with the Russ Brown booth at every United States event they attend, then RBMA will return the custom machine prior to the 2020 Motorcycles As Art Exhibition at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. Allowing an incredible way to garner attention for builder Andrae Radae-

lli from Radikal Chopper, Milano, Italy, and for master custom paint artist, Manuel Costello’s work to be seen. The bike is sure to catch your eye. The sleek Harley-David-son started life as a 1975 Ironhead Sport-ster 1000cc, but now sports a hardtailed rigid frame with an Arlen Ness front end in a style Radaelli describes as “bobber-board tracker-digger,” but he invites you to label it as you choose. So swing by the Russ Brown Motorcycle Booth at any one of these events and give it a once over. We’re sure you’ll be impressed!

Also look for Woody in the pages of the Sturgis Rider Daily to win Chip merch. Each day there’s a differ-ent Woody caricature hidden in a photo of an event or loca-tion he especially recommends. The first three readers who report their find to the Chamber of Commerce/Rally Info Center at the Chip CrossRoads win a prize bag. Shelley Rossmeyer Pepe • Rossmeyer Harley-Davidson • 25 years
Family owned and operated since its incep-tion, Daytona Harley-Davidson prides itself in providing the ultimate buying experience to Harley-Davidson riders. Bruce opened his dealership on Beach Street in Daytona in 1994 then boldly built the Destination Daytona loca-tion in Ormond in 2005, what some called a biker’s playground. When he died unexpectedly while riding to Sturgis in 2009, it was a challeng-ing time in motorcycling and for the Rossmeyer family. But Bruce’s wife and children stepped up to secure the business, determined to see it continue and prosper. As they mark 25 years, we believe their success is a prime example of what the Moxies reward: dogged persistence, hard work, and the unwavering will to succeed.
Arlin Fatland • 2 Wheelers • 49 yearsAccording to Bikernet, Arlin Fatland is a mad man who
loves choppers as much as he loves beer – and that’s a lot!Founded in 1970, 2 Wheelers MC Shop in Denver is an
authentic old-time custom garage. When it first opened, motorcycles were not mainstream, bikers were not consid-ered acceptable and chopper culture wasn’t embraced as it is today. The folks in the sketchy neighborhood where his shop stood – and still does - tried to run the dirty bikers out. But Arlin persisted.
In 1973, while hanging around Sturgis City Park, Arlin noticed there was nowhere to buy basic motorcycle parts and services. So he opened a shop during rally time – and still runs it every year. He discovered similar services lack-ing in Daytona and opened 2 Wheelers in Daytona, clos-ing it this spring after 30 years of operation.
We’re delighted to recognize Arlin’s talents and tenacity with this award.
Ron Paugh • Paughco • 50 yearsFor the past 50 years Paughco has been providing cus-
tom and restoration components for Harley-Davidsons and it’s a true family business. Owner Ron Paugh began riding dirt bikes in the San Fernando foothills as a kid and soon bought his first Knucklehead basket for $75. About that time, Boyd DeFrance, owner of D&D Cycle, asked Ron if his father’s tool and die company could reproduce H-D inner primary covers — and that was the beginning of Paughco.
With the husband and wife team of Robert and Ruth Paugh at the helm and son Ron heading up design and development, Paughco was on the move. By the late ‘70s, the company was manufacturing thousands of unique
parts, becoming the number one choice of bike builders worldwide. When Bob Paugh took his final ride in 1987, all operations were transferred to Ron.
Friends say he’d much rather be in the shop bending metal than on stage collecting awards, but in addition to this Moxie Award, Ron Paugh is being inducted into the Sturgis MC Museum Hall of Fame this year, so he’d better get used to it.
Fred Fox • LeMans Corporation • 52 years
LeMans Corporation located in Janesville, WI, is the parent company of Drag Special-ties and Parts Unlimited. As the company’s founder in 1967, Fred Fox made sales calls in a beater VW Beetle and kept inventory in his home garage. These many decades later he remains its leader and visionary.
You’ll see Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited trucks and banners at every major event and racetrack. The company’s tag line is “We Support the Sport” a saying that’s been backed by consistent, active bolstering of the industry.
Another company conviction is the solid dedication to brick and mortar shop owners. The hundreds of compo-nents in the Drag and Parts catalogs are only available through over 12,000 authorized dealerships worldwide and the company continues to expand its market penetra-tion with sister companies Parts Canada and Parts Europe.
These beliefs are backed by a passion for American motorcycles and the open road – and Fred’s leadership.
Accepting the award on Fred’s behalf is his nephew, Alex Fox. Mandy Rossmeyer accepted for that family. Shelly could not attend.
Who’s got Moxie?cHiP cELEbratEs inDustrY LEaDErsMore than a decade ago, the Buffalo Chip’s Rod Woodruff had grown weary of grim predictions on the
future of the motorcycle industry. He started gathering industry people together on the final Sunday of the Sturgis Rally to create a forum to share their experiences. He called it the Survivor’s Club.
Intending to gauge progress and provide a place for open discourse, that effort revealed bright spots in motorcycling, bringing to light people and enterprises that personified persistence, longevity and determination – all characteristics worth celebrating. This was the dawning of the Moxie Awards.
Woodruff stated, “Those who’ve demonstrated the backbone, skills, determination and cajones to start a busi-ness, grow it and prosper amidst difficult economic challenges in an intensely competitive marketplace have earned respect and recognition.”
Now days, the Buffalo Chip’s Moxie Awards recognize those few who’ve started, met the challenges and continue to build businesses that have served the public and motorcycle industry well. We honor them here.

Brittney Olsen20th Century Racing
Brittney Olsen is known worldwide as the girl who was born in the wrong century. Pas-sionately dedicated to the past, Brittney rides antique motorcycles and is committed to pre-serving motorcycle history. As a wife, mother, and award-winning antique racer, she is well respected for her role in the antique riding scene. She has served as AMCA’s National Youth Coor-dinator, started 20th Century Racing back in 2012, and has launched a campaign to preserve the historically significant racetrack in the city of Sturgis, South Dakota. And that’s not all. You can find Brittney and her antique-riding race friends down at the Buffalo Chip Amphitheater for the antique races TODAY so don’t miss your chance to meet this dynamic woman rider!
SRD: How long have you been riding?Brittney: I’ve been riding since I was three!
My grandpa put me on a tiny bike and I just loved it, even more than horseback riding. I’d just been learning how to ride a bicycle so that mini bike was perfect because I just wanted to ride. I started racing when I was 11, but I really became a motorhead at 3 years old!
SRD: Do you have a favorite race you’ve competed in?
Brittney: Each individual race has its own cool factor. It’s always you against your machine against the men and women compet-ing with you. Sometimes things just click and you become a champion. I’ve won three times at Sturgis, which is crazy because I started out working there as a promotional model handing Dove soap out to bikers. Sturgis is a homecom-

A Word from Assistant Editor Madeline Woodruff
This year, I was inspired to seek out and inter-view several incredible women bikers who’ve been out on the long and winding roads worldwide, kicking up dust on the racetracks, making history, and making a name for female bikers wherever they go. I wanted to celebrate them, these fear-less women, and what they bring to the epics of motorcycling. I wasn’t disappointed. I’m forever inspired by these ladies on two wheels, and I’m excited to present this year’s Sturgis Rider Daily special, Inspiring Women Riders!
ing for me, to go there, to win and be a champion is such an honor.
SRD: What challenges have you faced as a woman racer?
Brittney: There’s no record of a woman racing a twin cylinder motorcycle and winning. Someone asked me if I knew I was the first woman who won racing one. There were women before me, but not on a twin, so I automati-cally think of the women who had to dress up as men with male aliases and just think there had to be another woman. It’s been 100 years of racing history, there has to be more women who’ve done this. I want to hear more stories about earlier women racers, but it’s not docu-mented.
If you’re a female in racing, it matters if you have fun, not if you win. There should be no gender. Girl classes are great, but if you’re a girl and you’re constantly win-ning, why can’t you race against men? Why try to make it girls-only?
SRD: How do you and Twentieth Century Racing draw younger women and men into antique racing?
Brittney: Right now it’s a bit difficult for young people to get into antique bikes because parts can be a bit expen-sive. The cool thing though is you tell the story: you buy the parts, you build a machine, and you really get it know it. I get a couple emails a year from random 20-some-
things who were just like me when I started. There isn’t enough accessible information for
younger people online. Most websites are historical stories. If you wanted to learn about it you had to read books and magazines from the early teens and twen-ties to find out what bikes people had and how they raced them.
Twentieth Century Racing makes that information more accessible. We bring information to the Internet, and it’s a huge step in the right direction for us towards getting younger people and women involved.
SRD: What does it mean for you personally to be a positive female racer influence?
Brittney: I dreamed my entire life of being just that. I didn’t know growing up that I would end up doing this, I just listened to my heart and ended up falling in love with a 1900s Excelsior and it led me here. It’s tough, and it’s always been tough. It used to be there were only 2 races a year, but now others have started taking an inter-est. I never imagined it would have this sort of impact, but I’m so glad it did because it is such an honor.
Each individual woman inspires me with her pas-sions. Girls that are into Harleys, or adventure tour-ing bikes, just doing what they’re passionate about, and that’s what motorcycling is about: Being free and going out there to do something you love. That’s the beauty.

Keene from Traverse City, Michigan, entered his rigid 1976 Harley-Davidson FXE, named “Showtime,” and won the honor of displaying his less-than-4-week-old build at the Buffalo Chip’s prestigious show curated by Michael Lichter.
When asked what he thought of his first trip to the Buffalo Chip, Brandon lit up.
“I love it,” he said. “It’s been amazing to meet these guys that I follow on social media and suddenly here I am, hanging out with them all week! What an awe-some show to be a part of!”
Brandon shared that he and wife Amy have gone all in to start their own company. Brandon’s doing the bike building while Amy handles the background at B.Keene Built. His enthusiasm wins one’s heart, and you immediately want to cheer him on. Keep an eye out, we’re certain we’ll be seeing a lot more of Amy and Brandon Keene.
Joe Meilke, promoter of the fabulous FXR & Dyna Show, came out to have a little fun

It’s part of the culture: bikers gathering to do good, without hesitation, with open hearts and open wallets, in equal
measure. The 5th year of the Flying Piston Benefit Breakfast presented by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys, whose mission is to further technical education and foster new industry participation, was a stellar exam-ple. Despite the dismal weather, generous bikers arrived to the traditional al fresco breakfast site to find that Mother Nature decided to rinse the place down, so festivities were relocated to inside the more climate-controlled Big Engine Bar at the Crossroads where Bloody Mary’s flowed and spirits
were lifted. It turns out that future Piston Breakfasts might have found a permanent location in the comfortably appointed bar.
Typically held on the first Sunday of Sturgis Rally week and hosted by the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, the Breakfast intro-
mEEting for a missionBuilders Breakfast marks 5th year duces each year’s group of custom motor-
cycle builders from the Buffalo Chip’s Motorcycle As Art exhibition curated by Michael Lichter, allowing meet and greet time for attendees. And for the second year, this is also the unveiling of tiny Strider custom bikes, an initiative developed to encourage new ridership. This year’s build-ers include Todd “Gilby” Gilbertson, Jessi Combs, Xavier Muriel, Brian Klock, Steve Reed, Roy & Nikki Martin, James Wash-nok, Devin Henriques, and Eric Hermann. Alumni of Motorcycle Missions, the event beneficiary, also customized a Strider and one over-the-top tiny custom rolled in from the Las Vegas home of Count’s Kustoms, thanks to “Counting Cars” stars Horny Mike and Shannon Aikau.
In addition to the presenting sponsor RBMA, the Breakfast garners huge support in people and product from Strider Bikes. Other sponsors are Kirsh Helmets, Steve’s Garage and Greener Frontiers. Tab & Slot stepped up to provide the premiere item of the silent auction: a heavy-duty plasma/fab-rication Certi-Flat table.
The Breakfast brings together cutting-edge custom builders and industry influ-encers to support veterans and provide technical education scholarships. Motor-cycle Missions, a 501(c)3 non-profit corpo-ration, helps veterans and first responders dealing with PTSD find hope and healing through motorcycles.

Everybody already knows about Rat’s Hole, the cool custom bike and chopper shows that are held
in the shade of that giant inflatable green rat you see at all the cool bike events. And after almost 70 years of producing the most prestigious custom bike shows in the world, it can easily be said that Ted Smith and the crew certainly know what they’re doing. From custom carved awards to seriously badass ratty swag, Rat’s Hole gear has been collectible since the very first bike show back in 1952. As a matter of fact, you can always tell how long the elite judges have been scoping out the local bike talent by how many cheese wedge patches they have on their shirt sleeves. Yeah, they’re that level of cult cool. So, of course, being a winner at their bike shows comes with a heavy dose of bragging rights already, but this year is exceptionally so.
Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show, Inc. has teamed up with artist Frankie Rodriquez, owner and lead designer from V22LA, to
make the unique awards for this year’s top bike winners. Rodriquez is best known for his custom creations seen on the biker
cable shows, Sons of Anarchy and Mayans MC, and designs for rock stars and celeb-rities. For the Custom Chopper Show at the Legendary Buffalo Chip on Thurs-day, August 8, Rodriquez has created the first time ever Rat’s Hole Trophy ring, the Super Ring Bowl of Bike Shows!
Awarded to all First Place winners, this elite Rat’s Hole Ring will be coveted among builders, collectors and bike enthu-siasts all around the world! To add another level of excitement, Rodriquez will be a celebrity judge! There are 14 classes with over 70 world famous Rat Trophies, but the Rat’s Hole trophy rings will only be awarded to the first place categories so come on down to the CrossRoads and get signed up, meet the world-famous Frankie Rodriquez and checkout the Big Daddy Rat’s Hole Custom Chopper Show.

The four-class Three-Dom Show & Shine brought out an artistic, imaginative and even pur-pose built variety of three-wheeled machines that sprawled across the asphalt at the Cross-Roads on Monday. With the boom in trike sales and custom conversions, it’s no longer rare
to see a three-wheeled bike on the road, and the Three-Dom Show was a colorful and interesting addition to the bike show schedule.

The Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s Western Frontier Motorcycle Rides is hitting the dusty trail tomorrow,
August 8, and promises all the lore and leather you need to fol-low the footsteps of legendary char-acters like Buffalo Bill Cody, Chief American Horse, Hugh Glass and riders of the Pony Express.
Starting at the Buffalo Chip with a rustic Continen-tal breakfast, this four-hour guided historical motorcycle expedition to the site of the Great Sioux Nation Battle at Slim Buttes will be memorable. Shared by local historian, Paul Mitchell,
you’ll hear fascinating stories of Lakota warriors and Cal-vary scouts as you’re transported back in time through the scenic foothills to the gravesite of the Buffalo Chip’s namesake, Jonathan “Buffalo Chips” White.
The ride offers you and your buddies an al fresco lunch and a chance to slap leather with an historic pistol and rifle shooting experience, so saddle up and be at the Buf-falo Chip Crossroads at 8 a.m. on Thursday, August 8.
The ride is limited to 20 participants, so make your reservations now at BuffaloChip.com. Find the complete schedule online as well.

Ever wondered where the Buffalo Chip got its name? Sturgis Rider Daily founder, Marilyn Stemp, shares a lit-
tle history and invites riders to join friends of the Chip in a patriotic ride on Memorial Day, 2020. Mark you calendar!
We raised the 800 flags in the annual Freedom Field at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip in May. An emotionally stirring start to Memorial Day Weekend, that time spe-cifically set aside to honor those lost while fighting for our country. The weekend would be capped by the inaugural Buf-falo Chips Memorial Ride, a group ride to a humble monument near Reva, SD, about 90 miles north of the Chip, where Jonathan “Buffalo Chips” White, a U.S. Army scout, loyal follower of Buffalo Bill Cody, and the campground’s namesake is buried. Some, including General Philip Sheridan, said White followed Cody too closely, hence the nickname conferred by Sheridan: Buffalo Chips White.
People often assume that Buffalo Chip Campground owner, Rod Woodruff, named the place on a whim, but it was more intentional – and serendipitous – than that. See, American pioneer heritage surrounds this part of western South Dakota: in 1874, General Custer’s expedition camped less than a mile from the present-day Buffalo Chip and if you climb Bear Butte, a legacy place sacred to Native Americans just to the north, you can still see the wagon train ruts that remain along the Deadwood to Bis-marck Trail.
As for Buffalo Chips White, certain detail is lost to history but wide brushstrokes paint the story this way: When the Civil War ended, White, who’d lived in the South and fought for the Confederacy, headed West to seek his fortune. His scouting skills earned him notice and broadened his friendships among other trailblazers, including Bill Cody, whom he emulated. Some reports have credited White with saving Cody’s life once.
By the autumn of 1876, Buffalo Chips was a civilian scout with an Army contin-gent led by General George Crook, who was charged with hunting down Native Amer-ican bands that September, three months
after the Battle of Little Big Horn. On September 9, Crook got word that Cap-tain Anson Mills, who Crook had sent to Deadwood for much-needed supplies, had captured a Lakota village consisting of 37 lodges near Slim Buttes. Mills requested assistance, as a counter assault was expected.
When Crook, White and soldiers from the 2nd, 3rd and 5th Cavalries, arrived to assist Mills and his men, they were already under attack by Crazy Horse’s warriors, led by Oglala Chief American Horse. An estimated 800 Native American warriors were vanquished by Crook’s forces of about 2,000 on September 10, 1876, in what was named the Battle of Slim Buttes.
Along with a vast amount of dried meat, ammunition and other provisions, the vic-tors recovered items from the Battle of Little Bighorn among the village tipis, including a 7th Cavalry Regiment flag in the lodge of Chief American Horse, Captain Myles Keogh’s bloody gauntlets, and personal items of other soldiers killed in that battle.
The Battle of Slim Buttes was not with-out casualties; Americans killed there were Army Scout Jonathan “Buffalo Chips” White and Private John Winzel (or Wenzel) of the 3rd Cavalry. Private Edward Ken-nedy of the 5th Cavalry died from wounds he sustained in the battle. The Slim Buttes Battlefield Monument, dedicated in 1920, recognizes these three.
Chief American Horse was also mor-tally wounded in the skirmish and died several days later. Slim Buttes became the first U.S. Army victory in the Great Sioux War of 1876.
So, on a cold Memorial Day 2019, as fog obliterated visibility and rain loomed certain, a small group of motorcyclists rode 90 miles north of the Sturgis Buf-falo Chip to honor brave soldiers good and true such as Jonathan White. Soldiers who stand as testaments to loyalty, stead-fast friendship, unyielding courage, and pioneer spirit - characteristics that bikers generally, and Buffalo Chip campers spe-cifically, hold dear.
Join us next Memorial Day when we’ll do it once again.
