PRINCIPALS BLOG
WELCOME BACK! Welcome back everyone. I hope you all had a restful break. I managed to squeeze in a few days away at Queenscliff for some much needed R & R, before heading back to school to check on how the painting was going. Well strap your seatbelts on…it’s going to be a busy term!
MOUNTAIN TOP BREWFEST WOW! What an event the inaugural Mountain Top Brewfest was. An amazing example of how well our community pulls together when raising funds for our school. Congratulations to Diamond, the Brewfest Committee and the organisers who, together with many hands from our parent community, managed to coordinate a very successful event. Approximately $12,000 was raised! We are very grateful for these funds. Being a small school we do rely heavily on the fundraising efforts of our community to support programs within the school, purchase much needed resources and undertake projects such as the recent painting of our administration building.
ADMINISTRATION BUILDING PAINTING PROJECT That was an interesting Segway into also thanking (again) the fundraising efforts of our school community. Have you seen our administration building? You almost need sunglasses! Furlong Painters have done an amazing job. We have all been so thrilled at how modern, fresh and inviting the foyer and front office area now looks. The painting has really given the building a major update. We are now looking into purchasing some new front office furniture and a display cabinet to complete the update. Once again, a big thank you to you all!
CHOIR How exciting it was to see and hear our choir perform under the tutelage of Karen Noonan. They certainly brought tears to mine and I’m sure many other’s eyes. Well done to Karen and all of the students who performed. It is exciting to see so many students take advantage of the opportunity to participate in choir, which is open to all students from Grades 2 to 6. We value music highly at Ferny Creek PS. Now that Production is over, I am looking forward to seeing the choir, together with many of our talented students, perform at assemblies during the term.

CURRICULUM DAY The staff were hard at work at school on Curriculum Day. During the morning we worked with our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support coach, Sarah, who together with Rhian, is supporting us to implement the next stage of the SWPBS framework into our school. Then during the afternoon we had a presenter from iMaths, Carmel, who presented a workshop that focussed on informing staff of the many online resources of the iMaths program.
FOUNDATION 2020 TRANSITION DAY Just a reminder that next Tuesday, 22nd October, 2.00pm – 3.00pm we will be having our next Transition Day. New 2020 Foundation students are going to have fun in the Art Room with Doug! If you haven’t yet returned your enrolment forms, please do so. If you know of anyone who is yet undecided as to which school to send their Foundation 2020 child to, please let them know about our special school in the hills and invite them along to our Transition Day.
COLOUR FUN RUN 2019 The Parents’ Club have organised a fun event ‘The Colour Fun Run’, which will take place the afternoon of next Friday 25th October. Please support the students by sponsoring them and encouraging other family members and friends to sponsor them too. The grade that raises the most in registration and sponsorship funds will win a ‘pizza party’. All of the funds raised will go towards purchasing much needed laptops throughout the school and updating our ICT program. You will find further information in this newsletter and on information sent home this week.
HALLOWEEN ON THE GREEN The Halloween on the Green event is also only a couple of weeks away! It will be held again at the Ferny Creek Reserve on Saturday 26th October, between 11am-7.00pm. We are working closely with our local community to present what promises to be a day of fun and spooky activities. Besides sharing in the funds raised, we are also supporting the Philanthropic Society in raising funds to enable them to continue with all their hard work in supporting those less fortunate in our community. You will find further information in this newsletter.
HATS Just a reminder that Terms 1 and 4 each year are Sun Smart terms. All students need to wear a sun safe school hat. Students who do not bring their school hat or who wear another hat, will need to stay under the shade sails outside of the office. No hat no play!
I am looking forward to another fun filled term full of exciting events. The final term of the year is always a busy one. Please check the calendar to make sure that you are informed of events or important dates coming up.
Have a good week, Anni Smart PRINCIPAL
Zooper Doopers will be sold in the multi-purpose room for 50 cents at lunch times on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning Monday 4th November.
All money raised will go towards Grade 6 Graduation.
The Kitchen Garden has been doing an amazing job providing morning tea to our school. The variety of foods and fruits have guaranteed empty plates and full tummies.
The program is still continuing, all thanks to Aldi’s generous donations and all the hard work from Tanya, Robyn and their crew of volunteers.
While the donations from Aldi have been more than generous, the Kitchen Garden was hoping to receive donations from the school community of the following:
Cheese Metal Spoons Toasters
Any donations can be left in the kitchen or at the office.
If anyone is available or would like to help, please contact Tanya or leave your details at the office.
Thank you from the Kitchen Garden

Cleanout –

‘Red Nose’ Closet Cleanout is a fantastic opportunity to clean out your wardrobes and donate your unwanted items to those in need. As an additional incentive, our school earns 25 cents for every kilo collected.
What can go in the bags: Clothes Bedding/blankets
Shoes Bags Soft toys
Bags will be collected from the school staff room on Friday October 18th. We advise that bags are to be returned on Thursday 17th to avoid disappointment.
Mountain Top Brewfest Cheers!
A huge thankyou goes to the organizing committee, local brewers and
volunteers of The Mountain Top Brewfest, a fantastic event for the
whole community held last Sunday at Ferny Creek Reserve. As many
of you know, this event was the original concept of FCPS parent,
Diamond Papazoglou, who wanted to celebrate his enthusiasm for
brewing and provide our school with much needed fundraising. It’s not
easy to bring a concept to fruition, but Diamond took this project on
from beginning to end, with the help of a committed group of equally
enthusiastic brewers and supporters. Thank you to Emily Allsopp, Rob
Tyler, Neil Jacobsen, Clayton Spencer, Steve O’Connor, Lachlan
Wooden and many others who helped cheerfully on the day.
The superb organization of this event is greatly appreciated by the
school, with everything running smoothly so that the community could
enjoy the afternoon. Catering, auctions, local music bands, souvenir
cups, formal hiring and licensing, this group of volunteers left nothing
in doubt, and produced an amazing event.
What a wonderful example of developing an idea and bringing the
community along. It goes without saying that the School Council are
so grateful and proud that Ferny Creek Primary is able to run with
ideas like this and have parents willing to find interesting ways to
support the school and community. We can’t wait to see the second
Brewfest in 2020.

Parents and caregivers of children aged 0-12 are invited to share their views and experiences in Council’s annual survey. Combined responses are used to better understand the services, programs and activities that families in Yarra Ranges need or would like to see. Complete the survey for a chance to win a Healesville Sanctuary family pass. Survey closes November 10th and can be found on the Council website at https://www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/Council/Engage-Yarra-Ranges/Parent-and-Caregiver-Survey

Book Clubs Last week all students received a Book Club magazine. Thank you to all those parents and
students who have already returned their orders. If you would like to make an order please
returned them by FRIDAY 25th OCTOBER. Remember you can place orders online. No late
orders will be accepted. If you would like you to pick up your order rather than having it sent
home with your child, please let Jill or Sam know.
This term we will be having our last Book Fair for the year! It will be held from Thursday
7th November, in the afternoon, until the morning of Thursday 14th November. Book Fair is a
great way for you to select books that your children are interested in and to help raise some
money for our school at the same time. We need as many volunteers as possible to assist with
sales.
As we are getting to closer to Christmas we are looking at having a session open to parents
during school hours. This will only be possible if parents are able to help. If you are happy to
help at any time please see Sam or put your name down on the roster in the office.
Thank you for your support.
