Science and Maths Middle School News
In year 6/7 science the students are currently exploring different energy types and how these
energies relate to each other. The students are currently running a series of very short
presentations in which they demonstrate experiments and models. In year 8/9 science the
students are currently exploring the different qualities of light. They are designing workshops
in which they teach each other the laws of optics. Topics include the laws of reflection,
colours, and the use of light in technology.
In year 8/9 maths the students are currently investigating consumer behaviour and
demographic information of their peers in middle school and upper primary school. They
have designed a questionnaire and asked hundreds of questions in order to get an idea of
what the chances are that a student in Alyangula middle school will have a certain liking.
Home Economics
Home Economics has begun in Middle School for this term. We will be covering a range of
topics including cooking, nutrition, money management, time management and textiles and
design. So far we have made pancakes and fried rice and have great cooking plans for the
weeks ahead. We are planning a restaurant evening for parents later in the term and the
students are busy preparing and planning for that night. We hope to see you all there.

Books in Homes
The Australian Government through the Department of
Education, Employment and Workplace relations is
generously funding a Books in Homes Australia
Programme to several schools in the Northern
Territory. This programme commenced this term and
will continue in terms 1 and 2 of 2010. Each child will
receive 3 books each term to bring home in a library
bag.
Students had the opportunity to view a mix of picture
books, novels, non-fiction, drawing books, how-to-
books, Indigenous themed titles as well as special
interest books. All primary and middle school students
have chosen their books, and orders have been placed
for students who were absent at the time.
The Preview Pack of books has now been donated to
our school library - that’s 144 new books each year
added to our shelves. The students will receive their
books in approximately 4 weeks.
The programme also incorporates a reward incentive
initiative, giving students an opportunity to earn extra
books every fortnight for simply being “Caught Being
Good”. Classes are also being encouraged to enter a
Comprehension competition in the book catalogue and
receive at the very least an Achievement Certificate.
There are also 10 major prizes distributed among the
NT schools.
We are very excited to be receiving this opportunity to
encourage reading at home across all ages.
Fun Run Prizes
The prizes from the fun run have been
arriving and we hope to have them all
here ready to hand out by the end of
this week.
Thanks to all the students for their
patience and once again for their huge
fundraising effort. Money raised will
be used for classroom projects and to
upgrade the IT facilities across the
whole school.

Work Experience
I recently did work experience in the Alyangula Area School music room with
Simon Pedder. This was a fantastic experience and I learnt about the great
things that Simon does for the school. Simon works for the NT Music School
and is an instrumentalist teacher. I sat through many lessons that Simon taught.
It was so amazing to see the amount of potential the students have. Simon explained a lot to me
about music that I would not have known otherwise. During this experience I realized that
being in Simon’s position is not as easy as it appears and there are many frustrating aspects of
his job. For example, it is very stressful when students do not practice because they do not
consolidate the information that they learn during their lesson. This is a very important part of
learning about music. Especially if the students want to improve. While observing classes with
Simon, I learned various techniques that I could apply to my own music skills.
Simon is also the teacher to a handful of Vocational Education Training students, otherwise
known as VET students. He teaches these students everything they need to know about the
music industry, music theory, performing and a wide range of other branches of music. I am so
grateful to Simon for giving up a lot of his time to answer questions and
guide me through processes. Also a big thanks to the students of the school
for letting me sit through their classes and observe their work. I have had a
fantastic time and wish everyone all the best in their music subjects.

Year 3/4 - Chicken Mummification
It has been an exciting start to term 4 for the year 3/4 class at Alyangula Area School. The
class has been undergoing a unit on ‘Around the World’ and where else should they begin
their travels than…Ancient Egypt. The students have be learning about the ancient culture
and traditions of the Egyptians, the Nile River, famous queens and pharaohs, mummification
as well as writing letters in hieroglyphics.
To get the feeling of being in Ancient Egypt it was important that students had a first hand
experience of mummification and what better way to do that then by excavating mummified
chickens buried by year 4/5 two years ago.
3/4 along with the original students who mummified the chickens spent a good 30 minutes
digging holes on the back oval, until the burial ground was found. Armed with paint brushes
and enthusiasm, 3/4 became archaeologist extraordinaires’. After carefully removing the dirt
and worms from the carcasses, it was amazing to see how well some of the chickens had
stayed intact, two years after the mummification process.
The next day students completed a recount of their find. Well done to 3/4 and students from
Middle School for all their hard work and enthusiasm. Next stop…….South Africa.
