Under the rescue plan, the Hong Kong government will be issued HK$19.5bn of dividend-paying preference shares and HK$1.95bn of warrants, giv-ing it a 6 percent stake.

Airlines heading for $84bn loss this year: IATAREUTERS - PARIS

Airlines are set to lose $84bn as the coronavirus pandemic reduces revenue by half to mark the worst year in the sector’s history, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecast yesterday.

With most of the world’s airliners currently parked, IATA said revenue would likely fall to $419bn from $838bn last year.

“Every day of this year will add $230m to industry losses,” IATA Director General Alex-andre de Juniac (pictured) said.

The average loss amounts to almost $38 per passenger

flown.In 2021, IATA warned losses

could hit $100bn as traffic struggles to recover and airlines slash fares to win business.

“Airlines will still be finan-cially fragile in 2021,” De Juniac said, predicting “even more

intense” competition. “That will translate into strong incentives for travellers to take to the skies again,” he added.

IATA forecast a rise in 2021 revenue to $598bn. Airlines are counting the cost of weeks of lost business, a debt pile swollen by bailouts and a diminished demand outlook.

Passenger numbers are seen falling to 2.25 billion this year before rising to 3.38 billion in 2021, still more than 25 percent below 2019 levels.

Yields, a proxy for fares, are seen falling 18 percent this year, contributing to a $241bn decline in passenger revenue.

Cargo, a relatively small

share of the overall business, brought some relief as mass plane groundings drove price increases expected to top 30 percent, IATA said, helping revenue to a near-record $111bn. Even in markets where COVID-19 infection rates have fallen sharply, airlines still face a patchwork of travel restric-tions and wary consumers.

A 14-day quarantine for arriving passengers introduced by Britain this week has prompted an angry response and legal threats from the travel industry amid reports that it may be loosened in favour of “air corridors” to some destinations.

Greece raises€3bn in thisyear’s thirdbond sale

AFP - ATHENS

Greece yesterday raised €3.0bn ($3.4bn) from a 10-year bond, a banking source said, its third debt sale this year as it seeks to shore up its finances after a costly coronavirus lockdown.

Financial websi tes reported that offers exceeded €15bn.

Greece in April had raised €2.0bn with a seven-year bond, and €2.5bn with a 15-year-bond in January.

The country had origi-nally aimed to borrow between €4.0bn and €8.0bn in 2020, according to the budget.

Greece earlier this year had a comfortable cash buffer of €3bn, but part of it has been spent on emergency measures to support busi-nesses during a coronavirus lockdown from March onwards. The government has earmarked €24bn in national and EU funds to support the economy this year due to the shutdown.

The latest estimate by the finance ministry suggests that economic output could drop by up to 13 percent in 2019.

Last week, the state sta-tistics agency said Greece’s economy had contracted in the first quarter by 0.9 percent year-on-year.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has already warned the country that the economy would fall into a “deep recession” this year before rebounding in 2021.

Hong Kong leads $5bn Cathay Pacificrescue package to maintain hub statusREUTERS - SYDNEY/HONG KONG

Hong Kong will lead a $5bn rescue of Cathay Pacific Airways, which like other airlines has been hit by a global travel slump triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.

The government’s involvement in the recapitali-sation follows the double blows of Hong Kong’s political unrest and the coronavirus outbreak, which Cathay said meant it was burning through about HK$3bn ($387m) a month in cash.

Around the world, states have been bailing out airlines and in some cases, such as Ger-many’s Lufthansa, taking direct equity stakes to keep them flying.

“The alternative would have been a collapse of the company. Commercial debt markets are effectively closed to airlines today who do not have extensive government shareholder support,” Cathay Chairman Patrick Healy (pictured)told reporters yesterday.

Cathay has grounded most of its planes, flying only cargo and a skeleton passenger network to major destinations such as Beijing, Los Angeles, Sydney and Tokyo.

Like Singapore Airlines, which received an up to $10.1bn rescue package led by state-investor Temasek, Cathay has no domestic market to cushion the international loss.

Finance Secretary Paul Chan said the investment in Cathay was to help protect Hong Kong’s role as a leading inter-national aviation hub while gen-erating a reasonable financial

return. “It is not our intention to

become a long term shareholder of Cathay Pacific,” he told reporters. “It is not our intention to interfere with the operation and management of Cathay.”

Under the rescue plan, the Hong Kong government will be issued HK$19.5bn of dividend-paying preference shares and HK$1.95bn of warrants, giving

it a 6 percent stake. It would also provide a

HK$7.8bn bridging loan and would have the right to two non-voting observers at board meetings. Chan said they would be seasoned business profes-sionals. The deal includes a HK$11.7bn rights issue to existing shareholders, led by Swire Pacific Ltd and Air China Ltd, which had halted trading on Tuesday morning alongside Cathay, pending the announcement.

Swire, which holds 45 percent , Air China which owns 30 percent and Qatar Airways with 10 percent plan to partic-ipate in the rights issue, Cathay said. Their holdings will fall to

42 percent , 28 percent and 9.4 percent due to the government stake. BOCOM International analyst Luya You said the com-bined package would provide more than enough funding for Cathay. “A recapitalisation plan of this size bodes well for Cathay’s long-term future,” she said. “Big airlines with sufficient liquidity can actually gain sig-nificant market share immedi-ately post-COVID.”

Cathay said a fall in pas-senger revenue to only 1 percent of the previous year’s levels meant it had been losing cash at a rate of HK$2.5bn to HK$3bn per month since February.

It has furloughed some pilots at overseas bases and cut

cabin crew roles in the United States and Canada, but has not announced large-scale per-manent job losses.

The airline said it would put in place a further round of exec-utive pay cuts and a second vol-untary leave scheme.

Chairman Healy said “tough decisions” would be made in the fourth quarter after it reviewed all aspects of its business model, including its aircraft orders.

China’s aviation regulator may make it difficult for it to merge regional arm Cathay Dragon into its main brand because of infractions during last year’s pro-democracy protests, two sources told Reuters last month.

A Cathay Dragon passenger aeroplane taking off as Cathay Pacific aircraft are seen parked on the tarmac at Hong Kong’s Chek Lap Kok International Airport in this file photo. Trade in shares for Cathay Pacific, and its two biggest shareholders Air China and Swire, was suspended in Hong Kong yesterday ahead of an expected announcement. The suspensions come as Cathay, Hong Kong’s flagship carrier, battles a devastating slump in business sparked by the global coronavirus pandemic.

Portugal's finance minister resigns Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa (centre) gives a press conference after announcing that Finance Minister Mario Centeno, (left) is stepping down from the government and will be replaced by Secretary of State for the Budget, Joao Leao, at the Palacio da Ajuda in Lisbon yesterday. Mario Centeno, the head of the Eurogroup, stepped down as Portugal’s finance minister. Centeno has headed the Eurogroup, a framework for meetings of Eurozone finance ministers, since December 2017.

UBS starts regional private markets groupsBLOOMBERG

UBS Group AG is setting up European and Asian teams to bring more private market deals to its wealthy clients as part of a global push to boost its offering beyond regular securities.

Giuseppe De Filippo will lead distribution teams for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Switzerland, according to a memo sent to staff on

Tuesday. Enrico Mattoli will oversee distribution efforts for the Asia Pacific region, said the memo, which was confirmed by a UBS spokesman.

The announcement follows the creation of a similar group in the US and is the next step in efforts by the world’s largest wealth manager to increase business with its multimil-lionaire and billionaire clients. Many of them seek access to private equity, real estate and

other unlisted assets, which are typically sourced through the investment bank.

The regional teams will bring together employees from the wealth management and investment banking businesses with the aim of coordinating resources. The two businesses still need to iron out how to split fees, said people familiar with the discussions, who asked to remain anonymous disclosing internal negotiations.

Japan and Britainagree to start talkson early trade dealREUTERS - TOKYO

Japan and Britain agreed to start talks on an early trade deal, Japan’s foreign min-istry said yesterday, as Britain emerges from decades of outsourcing its trade policy to the European Union.

Britain is embarking on negotiating free trade deals with countries around the world and last month launched formal talks with the United States.

Japanese Foreign Min-ister Toshimitsu Motegi wel-comed interest expressed by British Trade Minister Liz Truss (pictured) to join the Trans-Pacific free trade pact, a foreign ministry statement said.

“Both ministers agreed to start negotiations to build a new economic partnership and work towards an early agreement to secure business continuity for both countries,” the statement said.

Britain hopes ultimately to join the 11-member Com-prehensive and Progressive

Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and sees trade talks with Japan as a step towards that end.

Japan’s trade minister earlier said that Japan would call for an early elimination of automobile and auto parts tariffs in negotiations and adopt high-level rules on digital trade in a post-Brexit trade agreement with Britain.

EU and British negoti-ators said on Friday they had made very little progress in their latest round of talks about a post-Brexit trade agreement, with just weeks left to extend a year-end deadline to reach a deal.

US job market rapidly healing in June, say Fed researchers

BLOOMBERG

The US labour market has con-tinued to heal at a relatively rapid rate through early June, St. Louis Federal Reserve researchers found, using real-time data that provides a more timely view than official government reports.

Employment has fallen about 8.75 percent in the week ended June 5 from January levels, making up almost half the decline of 15.08 percent recorded in mid-April, St. Louis Fed senior economist Maxi-miliano Dvorkin and research assistant Asha Bharadwaj wrote in a blog posted yesterday. The estimates rely on daily employment data from Homebase, a scheduling and time-tracking tool mainly used by individually owned and operated businesses in the food and beverage, retail and service industries. “We predict that the recovery has continued at a healthy pace” through June, the researchers said.

May unemployment unex-pectedly declined to 13.3 percent as employers added 2.5 million workers to payroll, defying expectations for a Depression-style surge in joblessness and stoking optimism the economy is bouncing back from a virus-induced recession.
