My oldest daughter Yalisaira (20) is a graduate of East River High School and is currently a sophomore at Valencia Community College. Yali will be starting UCF in the Fall and majoring in Business. She hopes to go into marketing in the fashion industry. Her hobbies are reading, catching up on the latest fashion trends and staying up nights playing on her PlayStation. Yali attends school on part-time basis and is currently babysitting until she has a more permanent schedule at UCF. My middle child Shaylie (14) is currently a freshman at East River High School. Shaylie hopes to become an occupational and speech therapist for disabled children. Her hobbies include reading, PlayStation and painting her nails. My youngest child Analise (9) is currently a 3rd grader at Renaissance Chickasaw Charter Elementary. Analise does not know what she wants to do yet when she grows up, she just knows that even if she gets married someday that she will always live with her parents (yeah us!). Her hobbies include reading, Soccer, PlayStation and playing with her Monster High dolls.

The Wedgefield Green Thumb Garden Club met in May with Dulce Rodriguez presenting the program on Succulents (small cactus type plants for home or patio). Dulce spoke on how to care for the plants and how to decorate using these plants. Her program was very informative. She gave away many plants as door prizes. We greatly appreciate our members for volunteering to put on these programs. In June we will meet at the Country Club on the 1st Thursday at 11:00 A.M. Our long time member Lee Breedlove will present a program on house plants. If you have any interest in gardening please join us.

Spring is in full bloom. Weather during an El Nino year can be unpredictable. Thankfully, we received some much needed rain in early May. As the hot part of the year approaches, continuous weekly rainfall is what we need to prevent a severe fire season. While doing spring chores, please consider removing dead brush from around structures and cleaning pine straw debris from gutters. Soffits should be screened to prevent embers/firebrands from blowing into attics. To learn more about maintaining a Firewise Home, visit and “Like” OUR Wedgefield Firewise Facebook page. We are always looking to expand our

volunteer base. The next event for Wedgefield Firewise is the Cattleman’s Breakfast, on June 25th , 6:30 to 10:00 AM. Breakfast is always great and you don’t have to travel far. The Cattleman’s Breakfast is at Highway 50 and 419 in the Tractor Supply parking area. National Arson Awareness was celebrated May 1st through the 7th. This year’s goal was to “Spread the Facts Not the Fire”. FEMA reports that 25% of all Wildland Fires, occurring 2010- 2014 were ruled Arson. Never confront an Arson Suspect, instead, call 911 and relay description of any suspicious activity. The Arson Tip Line is 1-877-662-7766. For more information about Arson visit www.usfa.FEMA.gov/aaw.

The Wedgefield Garden Club started judging Yard Of The Month two years ago. We have seen the community respond by dressing up their yards along with better maintenance. If you are chosen the winner for the month you receive a sign in your yard for one month, an article about your yard in the Wedgefield Community News and a $25 gift certificate from Zaxby’s Restaurant. Besides all of this it is an honor for all of your hard work. We judge 8 months out of the year, April through November. Each month we choose a different section of Wedgefield. To qualify your yard must have the following:1.Grass cut, edged, weed free and good color.2.Trees and bushes well manicured.3.Lots of color in annuals, perennials and other shrubs.4.No artificial plants in your yard.So Wedgefield residents, it’s time to go to work and dress up your yard. Good luck.

Bus TransportationMany of you are asking when we will have information on school busses. Specific bus information does not come out until late July. What we can tell you for sure is that if you are within a 2 mile radius of the school your child will either be a car rider, bike rider or walker. Everyone further than two miles will receive bus services. We will let you know when the link is current to check your addresses for bus service. Water ConcernsMany of you have expressed concerns over the water system in the Wedgefield area. The district has taken the safety and welfare of your students seriously. They have water filters on the pipes prior to the water fountains or bathroom fixtures already installed. They invested in designing an extensive water filtration system for each building to ensure the water is safe for drinking while at our new school. They are reviewing the reports taken by Orange County to help determine the correct design. As we continue to get updated information we will share it with you. Reduced Rate Internet ServicesIf you are in need of internet then this may be for you! They are offering families that qualify a super reduced rate of $5-10 a month for internet services. Hurricane season is fast approaching. Are you ready? Orange County and the Office of Emergency Management will hold their annual Hurricane Expo on the 4th of June. This year it will be held on the east side of the county. This event is well worth the drive to the Renaissance Senior Center at 3800 South Econlockhatchee Trail. There will be talks

by various experts including WFTV Meteorologist Tom Terry and Emergency Responders as well as Safety Vendors.

The Governor’s Hurricane Conference was held during the week of May 8th. Attendees from all over the state were there taking various classes in preparation for the hurricane season. The fact that we have not experienced a hurricane for many years is no excuse for not preparing for the possibility. The theme for the conference was “REBOOT READINESS”, get out of the denial, complacent mode and realize that it’s not “IF” a hurricane can hit us, it is “WHEN”.

PAGE 17 The Wedgefield News VOLUME 15 ISSUE 6

During the last half of APRIL to the present date of MAY 12, 2016 based on Orange County Sheriff’s crime statistics on OCSO web site we have had ONLY ONE reported crime. That was a vehicle stolen on Robinson in the 19500 Block. The golf cart stolen on Mosby was not listed although it was reported.

Before I discuss the calls I have gotten I am firmly convinced that not all reports are being recorded. We are not seeing the results of reported crimes on the OCSO web site. This could be an effort to keep crime stats down during an election year, making it imperative that I get a call after calling OCSO to report the crime. That is if we are going to have a true picture of our local crime.

Regarding the calls that I did get: I got two calls about reported auto burglaries one on BAKER in the 2200 Block and one on MAJESTIC in the 20500 BLOCK. In both cases a garage door opener was taken and in one case the garage was entered. I got one call regarding vandalism on ABALONE regarding the egging of a home and the cars in the driveway. I got one call regarding voyeurism and one call regarding suspected drug activity. In each case I referred the caller to the appropriate OCSO number for the deputies to handle.

Let’s face it we have over ONE THOUSAND residents on the Wedgefield NHW Face Book page WATCHING and REPORTING so there is little that goes on that someone does not see. Now there is a problem, actually two problems, FIRST the reporting of the observed incident and SECOND something being done about what has been reported. Quite frankly we must adhere to what has been promulgated for years and that is a call to OCSO on the appropriate number and then one to me. You are always encouraged to meet with the deputy to be sure that the incident is responded to and not forgotten because of other more pressing problems. Rest assured there is always another pressing problem somewhere in Orange County that can take precedence so we need to be sure the incident is responded to. We do continue to have solicitor issues. I had three reports of AT&T solicitors being rude and in one case providing false information to a specialist that knows the business and the capabilities of the system. The Yard of the Month Committee for May selected a beautiful yard in the Reserve belonging to Wedgefield newcomers Michael and Anna Fox of 2626 Lyndscape. Michael and Anna moved here in August of 2015.They were very pleased that their yard was selected for Yard of the Month as they have been working hard on it, especially the gardens in front. Anna was quick to say that Michael has done most of the work and she is very proud of what he has accomplished. The first thing you notice as you approach their home is the beautiful magnolia tree in bloom. The back of the garden is bordered by a beautiful row of holly and the front border has several dark green grass-like liriope plants, azaleas and periwinkle with pink blooms for color. There are also croton, several hibiscus and purple ruellia (wild petunia) surrounding a small fountain. They recently planted a small pink bougainvillea to the left of the fountain and a small pineapple in a pot at the edge of the front porch. The wreath on their front door is a nice finishing touch. The Wedgefield Garden Club would like to welcome them to the neighborhood and congratulate them on a job well done.

There were several beautiful yards in this area that deserve honorable mention: 2608 Regency Oak Lane has a very beautiful and unusual collection of large container gardens featuring a wide variety of succulents; 2612 Pine Glen Court has a very colorful garden featuring crotons, palm and bamboo; 19627 Knight Tale Lane has a lovely yard with a beautiful vine, several palm trees and a tall evergreen near the front door; 2984 Lyndscape and 19306 Mardi Gras also have lovely gardens, with nicely landscaped and maintained yards.

I was in High School when I heard then President Kennedy’s famous speech at Rice University, committing the United States to putting a man on the Moon and returning him safely home by the end of the decade. I still get chills every time I hear or read any part of that speech. It so greatly influenced me at the time, I decided that whatever it took, I was going to have my finger prints on that rocket! Four years later I had the opportunity of working on the Apollo program as an inspector with McDonnell Douglas. It was an exciting experience and I am both grateful and humbled to have been a part of it. The United States remains the only nation to have landed humans on the Moon and returned them safely to Earth. It was among the greatest achievements in the history of the human race and it has significantly contributed to America’s leadership on the world stage.

Since the Apollo Moon landing, our space program has accomplished many other challenging feats: building Space Shuttles to test the limits of human space flight, prolonged robotic exploration of Mars, launching a space-based telescope that can see far beyond our galaxy, and conducting scientific research on the International Space Station. America has now entered a new age of space exploration that will open up our commercial sector, develop new technologies, and push human exploration further into our solar system. When the Space Shuttles were retired in July 2011, the United States became reliant on the Russians to launch American astronauts to the International Space Station. Our cost to access space has now exceeded $70 million per astronaut. To break this cycle of dependence, last year Congress approved record funding levels for NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which is managed at the Kennedy Space Center. This initiative brings together American aerospace companies with the goal of launching U.S. astronauts on an American vehicle from American soil. American ingenuity was on display as SpaceX launched its Falcon 9 rocket from the Cape and successfully landed it in an upright position on a barge in the Atlantic Ocean. While the Commercial Crew Program is an important step in securing America’s access to the International Space Station, America has not lost sight of the need for humans to explore beyond low Earth orbit. In 2010 Congress authorized construction of NASA’s Space

Launch System (SLS) as a successor to the Space Shuttle that will be capable of launching both cargo and human crews into space. The idea is to build a powerful rocket that will enable humans to return to the Moon and eventually travel to Mars and other deep space destinations. The SLS and its Orion crew capsule have received strong funding support by Congress and is set for its first unmanned mission in late 2018 followed by a human mission to orbit the Moon as early as 2021. Despite NASA’s historic role in leading the way forward, we are now witnessing a new era in the space industry where more companies are competing to provide launch services to NASA or plan their own space missions. Competition for space business is fierce and our laws and regulations need to catch up with these entrepreneurs and their innovative ideas. Congress recently passed and the President signed into law landmark commercial space legislation which included several of my provisions to help promote future commercial space ventures and streamline the regulatory process to make the U.S., and Florida, more competitive for commercial launches. According to Space Florida, our state is home to 11,600 aerospace companies that generate over $17.7 billion in sales and support over 132,000 employees. We have more interest in space companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin and Moon Express moving to the Cape. OneWeb will be building hundreds of small satellites launching into space to increase global Internet access. These are highly technical, good paying jobs that keep Florida, and America, at the forefront of innovation.I was fifteen when President Kennedy delivered his famous address declaring America’s mission to the Moon. Like so many Americans, I was inspired by the President’s call and personally wanted very much to be a part it. This too is an exciting time for our space industry and I encourage young people looking to be a part of something special to consider a career in the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Preparing to meet the challenges of the future is an important key to maintaining America’s competitive edge and our leadership in space.
