WINE VALLEY SIRS BRANCH #149Executive Committee Meeting

Napa Elks Lodge9:00 AM Tuesday, October 5, 2019

The meeting was called to order at 9:03 AM by Big Sir Carl Hammond. Secretary Jay Jacobs called on the officers and directors and "yes" there was a quorum. • SIR Bill Wells motioned to approve the agenda, SIR Dan McCabe seconded and the option

passed. • SIR Ted Simmons gave his Treasures Report and said that it was a positive report, Branch #149

had $12,739.23 in the bank. He also reported that we had paid our annual assessment in full.• SIR Rex Williams gave a Membership Report and said that we have 263 members and that

there is a possibility that we could have 8 new members today. (We had 5 new members--still very good!)

• Big Sir Carl Hammond gave an Attendance Report and told us that last month we had a poor showing at our monthly lunch, 139 showed up. SIR Adrian Fenderson gave a Web Page Report and reported that there is a lot of new interest in our website.

• Little SIR Report was given by the Little Sir --Franz Wartenweiler. Franz told the group that today's speaker is Chaplin Lee Shaw. Franz also told the group that he was having trouble getting a speaker next month. He has been trying for months to get a speaker from Travis Air Force Base and they have only half-heartly cooperated. He gave a nice pitch to the group, asking for someone to come forward to be the Secretary in 2020! Franz also told the group that he had had some health problems, but that he was feeling better and that with everyone pitching in next year, it would be another banner year for SIRs branch #149.

• Our State Report was given by SIR Dennis Pangburn and SIR Bob Hairston. The report was that there was to be a meeting between now and our meeting next month, so there would be quite a bit to report at our November meeting Re:the state.

• Big Sir Carl Hammond told the group that we were getting fried chicken and mashed potatoes today for lunch. Ron Kilby did he usual fine job of putting up the SIRs banner. "Thank you Ron!"

• Old Business: We were told that even through Chardonnay was in charge we would still need 7 volunteers for some of the things we needed to do for the Ladies Day Picnic. Very quickly the following S I Rs volunteered: Franz Wartenweiler, Tom Dawson, Tim Borman, Adrian Fenderson, Bill Wells, Bob Hairston and Rex Williams.

• New Business: Big Sir Carl Hammond, for some very good reasons, it was decided that at this coming Christmas Party we would do our own entertainment, i.e.no High School choir this year. We will all join in (if we want to) and sing some Christmas Carols. There was a vote to approve the change in entertainment---SIR Ron Kilby asked for approval of the change and his vote was seconded by SIR Ted Simmons.

• There was several activity reports. A report from the hiking group. The golf group is having their annual tournament on the 13th of November at the Yountville Golf course. There is a fishing trip out into Bodega Bay on the 14th of November. Litttle Sir Franz Wartenweiler asked that we approve of these activities, SIR Larry McCart seconded the Little Sirs motion, and the motion passed.

Big Sir Carl Hammond adjourned the meeting at 10:37 AM

Respectfully Submitted by Branch Secretary, Jay Jacobs

Miller, SIR Charlie Agnew, SIR Juan Escudero, SIR Phillip Kolski, and SIR Mike Sobelman. The 5 new members were welcomed into S I Rs group #149 by Big Sir Carl Hammond.

• SIR Ron Kilby did his usual fine job with the mike as he moved around the room as the prospective 5 new members were introduced.

• The State Report was given by SIR Dennis Prangburn, he told the group that on the 18th of Oct. there will be a State meeting in Walnut Creek and that he will have more to report next month after the State meeting.

• SIR Bob Hairston told a nice story about his wife who won $20 because she know that Roosters don't lay eggs.

• Big Sir Carl Hammond urged the group to come up with a name for a new secretary for S I Rs #149 for 2020. He also said that the Walkers and the Hikers need a new leader in 2020, please volunteer.

• Our Christmas Party is once again set for the Elk’s Club on the 3rd of December. Food choices are Salmon and Prime Rib.

• Our Ladies Day Picnic for next July will be totally catered by Chardonnay. This means that none of our members will be working the kitchen and can enjoy the party with their family and/or friends. We are still in need of a few Volunteers to help make the Picnic run smoothly.

• Big Sir Carl made a point to thank Rex Williams for his good work with the membership group. • Little Sir Franz Wartenweiler thanked the group for a great year and said that he is looking forward to a

super 2020. He also gave a pitch for someone to volunteer to the be new secretary. He then said that he hoped that our speaker, next month would be from Travis Air Force Base.

• Birthdays in October were read. There were 3 SIRs over 90, one 95 and one SIR is 98. SIR David Collins won a bottle of wine. Anniversaries were read and the winner in the anniversary category was SIR Marvin Rothman. Oh yes for being married over 50 years a bottle of wine went to SIR John Candelo.

• Then is was lunch time—————— • After lunch Tim Borman introduced our speaker, Chaplin Lee Shaw. Chaplin Shaw is a law enforcement

Chaplin. He has been working in the Napa area for many many years and his work is all voluntary. Chaplin Shaw explained many of his duties.

The meeting was adjourned by Big Sir Carl Hammond at 1:07 P M

Respectfully submitted by Branch 149 Secretary Jay Jacobs

18 Hole Golf with SIR Peter Dreier: 18 Hole Golf with SIR Peter Dreier Our regular September 2019 golf outing was held on September 18th at Blue Rock West Golf Club in Vallejo with 44 Sirs golfers in attendance. It was another incredible day of golf with great weather. There were three flights, depending upon NCGA handicap ratings and the winners of each flight were: First Flight-1st JIM KELLER with a net score of 64; 2nd GARY GARVER with a net score of 66; 3rd JOHN

BUCKLEY with a net score of 67; ; Second Flight-1st RUSS KNDIG with a net score of 68; 2nd JIM CHERNISS with a net score of 71; 3rd DENNIS RAWLINS with a net score of 71; Third Flight-1st ALEX HUTNIK with a net score of 65; 2nd JOHN ANDERSON with a net score of 71; 3rd DALE SANDBAK with a net score of 71. We had two closest to the hole contests. On hole #7, the winners were JOHN HARRISON with a shot of 12’10”, PETE STUPEY with a shot of 16’7” and MEL TAYLOR with a shot of 16’9”. On hole #11 the winners were JIM KELLER with a shot of 24’9”, JEFF SMITH with a shot of 25”0” and PETE STUPEY with a shot of 26’4”. At every monthly lunch, in the back of the room we have sign-up sheets for usually the next two golf outings and encourage all SIRS members who enjoy the game of golf to come out and play with us. The goal is to have lots of fun, make new friends with other SIRS brothers, share a lot of golf stories and not take ourselves too seriously. I want to personally invite all new SIRS members who recently joined 149 and indicated that they like to play golf to sign up for one of our upcoming golf events. If you do not have an official NCGA handicap index that is not a problem. We can help you get one and get on the SIRS 149 Golf Register. Respectively Submitted By, Peter Dreier, Chairperson.

9 Hole Golf with SIR Mike Murrell: Wednesday is golf day for SIRS. Consider it a middle-of-the-week meditation ritual to calm your mind and banish all frustrations you may have gained over the time since our last golf outing. We play 9-Holes at scenic Vintner’s Golf Club in restaurant haven Yountville. Tee times start at 9 AM and we tee off on the first hole. Green fees are your responsibility and there is a $3 entry fee for our voluntary closest to the pin contests on two of the three par 3’s. So if you

would like to relax, or just take your frustrations out on a little white or yellow or pink sphere please email me at [email protected] for more details or to let me know “U-R-N”.

Romeo/Dining Out with Ron Wilson: Thirty three Romeos dined at Hop Creek brewpub in September. Despite being one of the hottest days of the year we were comfortable in the shade and aided by large fans provided by our hosts. Unfortunately we had two couples not show up that had paid for dinner. Up until noon that day I could have held back their checks if I knew they could not attend. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are not going to make it to a Romeo

event. At some point I must guarantee a head count and we are committed. There is no plan for any more dine out events this year. With the crush, tourists, and holidays it is time to take a break. The plan is to start again in January so watch this space for further news. For more info. Contact Ron at 360-880-2652 or e-mail at [email protected] .

Roving Roosters with SIRs Bill Hester & Dave San Filippo: Roving Roosters Thanksgiving Celebration will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24th at Napa Valley Community Club House located at 1040 Orchard Ave. For more Info contact SIR Dave San Filippo @ 707-255-3482.

Theater with SIR Bob Benning: The 2019-2020 theatrical year is off to a great start. “9 to 5” was a terrific show of talent in both acting and singing. “Two Scoops,” Frank Volis, played a great understudy for Dolly Parton. In progress now is the free ticket reservation for Travis AF Band on December 11th at Lincoln Center. We already have 76 seats filled and we are going for more. It is never too late to ask for seats. The worst I can say is “NO.” Although, as I type this report, the outside

temperature is 109 degrees here on Dry Creek Road, thoughts are going toward the December 5th performance of “Miracle On 34th Street” at Lucky Penny. Just thinking of this has me headed to the closet to put on my heavy wool coat. Adrian Fenderson has outdone himself with another outstanding poster that I will start sending out in October. As always the price will be $25. This will be one to bring the whole family to. To get in the mood you may want to sit around the fireplace tonight with your hot chocolate. Don’t get too close and burn your chestnuts!! For more info contact Bob Benning at 337-2614.

Traveling with SIR Tom Jensen: Our Annual Golden Gate Fields, SIRS Day at the Races will be held on Friday, October 18th at 11:00 a.m. The cost is $41 per adult and includes parking, admission, reserved seating, a daily racing program, a full Buffet Prime Rib Luncheon served from 12:00 - 3:30, with tax and tip included. The first race of the day begins at 12:45. Don’t miss out on all of the fun! For more information contact Dave San Filippo @ 707-255-3482. It was also

announced that there will be no Reno Snow Train Trip this year. According to Tom, the weather prediction is that it will not snow, so how could they possibly schedule a snow train!

Hikers and Trippers with SIR Pete Smith: Tuesday October 15th, we will be hiking the American Canyon Wetlands. Meet up at the ride share lot at Redwood and Solano at 10.00am. to carpool to the foot of Eucalyptus Drive. After the hike we will reconvene to the South Kelley Grill for lunch on our own. Be sure to chip in a few bucks for gas if you are a rider. Please notify me ASAP if you are joining us as I need a head count for the restaurant.

After five years and nearing my 83rd birthday I have decided to relinquish my chairmanship of this committee. It has been a most rewarding experience and I thank everyone for their support! We have done over 35 hikes and trips from bridges and parks to ships and museums, some a few times over. As I am sure you are aware the success of SIR #149 is due largely to the many and varied activities we have and it is imperative that we maintain and grow them. With that thought in mind please consider chairing this committee, I will gladly assist in anyway possible, call or email me with any questions you may have. Happy Trails, Sir Pete [email protected] or 707-888-1909.

Walkers with SIR Dave Henry: Good morning gentlemen, we are now back at Alston Park. We meet at the South Parking Lot at 8:00 a.m. on Monday mornings. It will be a great start to your week! Come and help us tease Bob Benning! See you all then. For more information contact Dave Henry at [email protected] or by phone at 227-7413.

Webpage & Facebook with Adrian Fenderson: We are proud of our SIR #149 website. Note that there is a button that will be linked to a PDF of the new person application, Please look at our site and suggest any changes you would like to see so that we can make it very user friendly.  We encourage all SIRS to keep up with what is happening between newsletters by signing up for Facebook and look at our SIR Branch 149 Facebook page. Wine Tasting with SIR Bart Barthelemy: The Wine Valley Tipplers (“WVT”) closed out the summer with a wonderful tasting of a selection of Chardonnays provided by Ken Kirkaldie. The wines were all well received by the group with little variation in the scores. The October tasting has been cancelled and we will be doing our annual Cabernet Sauvignon tasting on November 13th. The

group will be filling 8 tables at the Christmas party so the good wine should be flowing! If you’re interested in joining our wine lushes, please send an email to [email protected].
