(1) Design out waste and pollution

(2) Keep products and materials in

use

(3) Regenerate natural systems

a circular economy looks beyond the ‘take - make - waste’ industrial model,

and aims to redefine growth, focusing on positive society-wide benefits.

It entails gradually decoupling economic activity from the consumption of

finite resources, and designing out waste out of the system.

Underpinned by a transition to renewable energy, the circular economy

builds economic, natural, and social capital (-> SDGs...)#circulareconomy

The Circular Economy is based on three principles:

1. Input: use circular materials (biodegradable or with recycled materials) 1. most often lower costs

2. Output: create materials to be circular (biodegradable or recyclable) 1. no waste disposal costs or reimbursement

3. Further: Re-use, maintenance, repair, adaptability, upgradability etc.1. Re-use most powerfull in reducing costs & resources (!)

The new Action Plan announces initiatives along the entire life cycle of products,

targeting for example their design, promoting circular economy processes, fostering

sustainable consumption, and aiming to ensure that the resources used are kept in the

EU economy for as long as possible, praving the way for the right to repair.

It introduces legislative and non-legislative measures targeting areas where action at the

EU level brings real added value.

Actions: The new Circular Economy Action presents measures to:

1. Make sustainable products the norm in the EU;

2. Empower consumers and public buyers;

3. Focus on the sectors that use most resources and where the potential for circularity is

high such as: electronics and ICT; batteries and vehicles; packaging; plastics;

textiles; construction and buildings; food; water and nutrients;

4. Ensure less waste;

5. Make circularity work for people, regions and cities,

6. Lead global efforts on circular economy (-> EEN?)

EEN services for your CE activities

How can EEN services help you to meet Circular Economy goals? How to find

replacements for non-recyclable technological materials?

Or how to find biological cycle materials that would do no harm if released into

nature?

Can these services find cooperations supporting your CE business model like

leasing, x-as-a-service, rental, repair, recycling etc.?

Can they help to market or find solutions internationally regarding maintaining,

repair, re-use, refurbishment, remanufacture, recycling, but also

assembly/disassembly etc. increasing your circularity?

Partnering event? Technology offer/-request? EU funding partner

search? Business offer/-request? Etc.

It starts with your need, then the EEN service that fits

Recycling biological cycle:

Hydrophobic coating, but compostableTG CE

Summary: A Swiss company has launched its first compostable clothing line. In

order to achieve compostability for a piece of clothing, the guidelines for design

and production are very strict. As a consequence of this the product

development and production process leaves little to no alternatives for features

like water repellency. The company is looking for partners who have the know-

how for this kind of coating respecting their criteria. Commercial, technical or

research agreements could be possible.

Many Expression of Interests.

Research project cooperation – Eureka funded - with a German Research

Institute

Technology Request “Hydrophobic coating onto a

natural and compostable fabric, without effects on

compostability”

Page 24: WEBINAR 9 Circular Economy - prod5.assets-cdn.io

een.ec.europa.eu

Biological cycle, production:

Natural fibre prepregs for tubesTG CE

Summary: A Swiss company is looking for a longtime partner to manufacture

composite tubes based on the natural fibres prepreg technology. The partner

they are looking for should have extensive experience in the processing of

large series of fibre composite parts either bladder inflation molding or table

rolling. The company is interested to develop a long-term partnership with a

company which should be able to adapt to the rapidly growing demand of the

Swiss company products.

Several Expression of Interests.

Cooperation on-hold due to success in other product segments like ski-,

windsurf-, surf-, boat- and car-industry. Now matchmaking to marine industry.

Technology Request “Bladder inflation molding or

table rolling to use with the company natural fibre

prepregs to make composites”

Page 25: WEBINAR 9 Circular Economy - prod5.assets-cdn.io

Recycling technical cycle materials:

Find a recycling (technology) for a non-

thermoplast

Summary: A Swiss company is looking for a recycling technology for duroplast

waste. Waste material that comes free during the production of eyeglasses.

Actually there is no economical advantage for the company to recycle this

waste (yet). But there is a great environmental interest. The company is open

for different cooperations with different organisations to solve this issue.

Several Expression of Interests.

Cooperation with a UK company:

A UK company has deep expertise in using supercritical (SC) fluids in

manufacturing various materials. They have built a test plant where typically SC

CO2 is injected in the material to be extruded. A way to dissolve cuttings and

scrap of Duroplast. Different processes for re-using, re-processing or recycling

of the material are possible.

Technology Request “Recycling (technology) for

Duroplast”

Biodegradable biological cycle: TG CE

Summary: Dutch company has designed, patented and produced a complete

line of products that is the most sustainable system for planting trees. The

system ensures anchoring, watering and venting, root guidance and protection

of young and precious sapling. The raw material for the components of the

Keeper system is a 100% natural bioplastic made of residual waste from the

food industry (starch). The Tree Keeper system prevents the needless cutting

of healthy trees in order to produce tree stakes. This leads to a CO2 reduction

of hundreds of tons per year. An average sized city can -depending on the

number of trees- reach their sustainability objectives solely by using the Tree

Keeper system.

Active matchmaking by EEN colleagues leading to several cooperations in

Switzerland and Norway.

Technology Offer “The Tree Keeper System”

Page 27: WEBINAR 9 Circular Economy - prod5.assets-cdn.io

Biodegradable biological cycle:

E-Indigo, no fluorinated waxesTG CE

Summary: Swiss company developed a sustainable "ski wax” based on indigo -

a stable blue plant dye - hygienically and ecologically sound. The hard,

oxidation-resistant sliding surface ensures minimal friction on ice, snow and

water, low abrasion, minimal dirt absorption and long use. Commercial

agreement with technical assistance and/or license agreement offered as

intended for sale by specialist dealers to replace the fluorinated waxes banned

by the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) next winter.

Many Expression of Interests

2 Cooperations ongoing. Other starting.

Technology offer “High-performance lubricant for

winter sports - biodegradable, non-toxic and easy to

use. A substitute for the critical fluorine ski waxes”

Page 28: WEBINAR 9 Circular Economy - prod5.assets-cdn.io

een.ec.europa.eu

Assembly and disassembly:

No glue, no screwsTG CE

Summary: A Swiss school of technology offers a modular multi panel system

can be assembled without any external fixtures. The system is mechanically

stable and self-centering. The multi panel system can be used to build mobile

radar reflectors.

Other applications include temporary installations such as shelf systems,

exhibition stands and stage accessories where quick assembly and

disassembly play a role. Licensing partners for the introduction to the market

are sought.

Several Expression of Interests.

No cooperation yet. In my opinion to early for the market.

Technology Offer “Modular multi-panel system, easy

assembly and disassembly with no glue, no screws,

no external fixtures”
