The color green is the most perceptible color to the human eye. Green lasers now appear as ultra bright light sources when comparedto other colors of equal power. As an example a 5 mw green laser will appear many times brighter than a 5 mw red laser. A 5 mw greenlaser beam (ray) will be visible in low light where a red laser is only visible as the impact point on the target. A great advantage is thatyou get this brightness without exceeding the 5 mw Class 3a compliance regulation as required by the FDA. Any laser when one islooking into the beam on a clear night will appear as the brightest object on the horizon, even from distances of up to many miles. Therange of green lasers will often exceed the limits of visibility limited by the curvature of the earth. A point source of omnidirectional lightwould have to exceed many millions of degrees K to be equivalent to the lowest of powered lasers..

Infra- Red Pulsed and Continuous LasersThese pulsed lasers are rated at 10 to 100 watts of peak power. Thislevel of power only exists for the defined duration of the pulse. If thesepulses are integrated for a one second period, you now have theenergy expressed in Joules. The advantage of a pulsed system is thatthe pulses are optically equivalent to the peak power level as ratedand can be detected with a suitable detection system that will seethem at this power level. The equivalent energy that the laser systemnow requires is only a fraction and is related to the repetition rate x thepeak power x the pulse duration and is approximately equal to Joules.NOTE: A Joule is a watt second and is “energy”. If that energy isreleased in 1 micro-second as a pulse, the power of that pulse is now1 megawatt!!! Note a laser pointer at 5 milliwatts equates out to thepulsed laser being 20 MILLION times brighter!!! A useful application ofthese two devices is use as a laser property guard security fencearound a home or other premise. Electro- Kinetic Devices High Energy Experimenters Project Plans, Kits and Ready to Use Devices

Exploding a wire is possible by discharging a large amount of energy intothe wire in a very short time period providing a very high peak moment ofpower. The wire now dissipates the charge energy in the form of heat,light and magnetic energy. A destabilized LCR circuit can be produced byswitching the stored energy of a capacitor into a circuit and theninterrupting this current with the exploding wire. At some time f(t) theswitch fires, now vaporizing the wire and quickly releasing the storedenergy. A powerful pulse of magnetic energy can now induce an electricfield in a reflector producing and directing a very powerful EMP pulse.

The target wire is connected into the “detonation chamber” that protectsthe observers from flying debris and the intense ultra violet flash. Leadsmust be kept as short as possible with the insertion of the trigger blockingcore shown in the setup instructions mandatory.

The wire is attached via all brass hardware using a wing nut andreplaceable flat washers to sandwich and hold the wire in place. Washerswill need replacing after around ten shots.

Many other interesting experiments such as placing a piece of paper orother material with in the explosion sympathetic range and observing thesplatter patterns and general damage. Strange designs are often depositedonto the target paper and have been coined “Blast Art”.

This project fires a 4 ounce projectile to a velocity capable of splitting a 1 x2” pine board on impact. A lighter projectile can be fired at considerablyhigher velocity. Device uses stored electrical energy accumulated on acapacitor bank and switched into the accelerator coil by a special threeterminal triggered spark switch. The accelerator coil induces a very highamperage current in the projectile that now sets up its own magnetic fieldthat opposes that in the coil causing a repulsive moment of accelerativeforce on the projectile.

The Mass Cannon uses a flat spiral coil arranged with a vertical flywayand wooden support base. The projectile used is on the heavy sideweighing in at over 4 ounces. Its geometry is a flat aluminum washer that isof the same size as the coil. This geometry provides maximum coupling andoptimizes electric to kinetic efficiency. Initial velocity is over 300 fps butquickly drops off due to the poor aero dynamics of the projectile shape. Apiece of 2 foot long 2 x 1 inch pine board placed on the flyway tube will beeasily split by projectile impact. Projectile may be retained on a flyway forrepeating display or free flying.

Can Crushing Project

This project clearly demonstrates the powerful mechanical forces due to apulsed magnetic field. A simple coil consisting of several turns is formed toallow fitting of an aluminum beer or pop can. A high peak current isswitched into the coil at f(t) and now induces a current flow in theperiphery of the can that now generates its own magnetic field inopposition causing constriction into the familiar hour glass configuration.

This project is an excellent demonstration and is used in several museumswhere students are encouraged to bring in their cans for crushing. Safetyis enhanced by positive grounding of the inducing coil eliminating anysteady state potentials. Operator simply places can into the coil, depressesthe charge button, waits for the green light and now presses the firebutton. Deformed can is removed and system is ready for the next event.

The PPRO1 Plasma Thermal Gun utilizes the electrothermal energy obtainedfrom vaporizing a metallic material, creating a pressure wave of sufficientmagnitude to cause a projectile to accelerate to ballistic velocities. Thesystem shown on our data is a relatively low velocity device within thebuilding capability of most hobbyists. The project may be scaled up forserious research with an obvious increase in high voltage handling andballistic hazards. The project requires experience in the handling of high-voltage, high-energy devices. Operation requires our working high-energypulser and capacitor bank as described. These values may be alteredwithin limits to allow the use of available capacitors that you may have onhand. An energy-storage capacitor is charged from a programmable,controlled current source to a selected high voltage. This capacitor isswitched by a triggered spark gap, dumping all the stored energy into asmall-volume explosion chamber and vaporizing a thin, aluminum wireplaced inside the chamber. A pressure wave forces a projectile out thebarrel to a high velocity. This project is suitable for a science classdemonstration if properly supervised with qualified personal.

Please note this equipment is open with exposed high voltagepoints. There are no safety interlocks. Installation where humanexposure is anticipated will require protective housings and generalsafety compliant procedures that must be implemented by the user.

As an example most lightning discharges are in the order 1 to 100 kilo-amps with 500 kilo-amps a rarity. The electric charge associated is usually 5 to 50 Coulombs. At a voltage of 50 to 500 million volts this transforms to a considerableamount of discharged energy. The rise time of the discharge is usually 1 to 10 microseconds with a fall time of 20 to 50 microseconds. Even though thisequates out to a destructive event the current rise is not as fast as the man made impulse generator. In other words Mother Nature got us in joules butnot in nanoseconds!!! The reason for the relatively slow rise is due to the atmosphere not approaching an ideal spark gap switch.

The output of the Marx is under 100 kilo-amps but its current rise is faster than a natural lightning bolt. Materials testing such as cables transformers andpower systems can be verified for integrity against lightning. Flash x-rays and the simulating of electro magnetic pulse (EMP) from nuclear detonationsare possible using this device. The output can be coupled into a suitable load, parallel flat line antenna etc. For flash x-rays you must couple the output

Marx generators are basically very simple in theory, a stack of capacitors is charged in a parallel configuration to a voltage “E” and then discharged inseries with a voltage of ”nE” where “n” in the number of capacitors charged. Sounds simple in theory but in reality several problems must be addressed.Selection of the capacitors will determine the peak current and rate of current rise during the discharge cycle that are now figures of merit for thesystem. Not only must we select the value of capacity and voltage but now must consider the discharge loop inductance and peak current handling ofthis part. Needless to say this part is far more expensive than normal oil filled filter capacitors.

These capacitors once charged must be discharged in a series configuration through special precisely spaced spark gap switches for each capacitor.Open air tungsten or molybdenum electrodes with Bruce or Rogowski discharge surfaces now switch the required currents with low “jitter” Switching

This now commences where all spark switches now simultaneously fire dumping the total charge into the load in nanoseconds.

Our basic Marx generators have charging resistors. Discharge resistors can be selected by the user dependent on the desired wave shape. Standardparallel plate transmission line with a gap of 300 mm or 500 mm is available to enable the user to couple the Marx for obtaining steep field strength of 100Kv to 400 Kv per meter.
