We have had a great start to our school year…..the energy around the school and in classrooms is amazing! Parents, I want to personally thank everyone for coming to Curriculum Night this week. As always, we had a tremendous turnout of parental support. Parent support is such a big component of your child’s educational experience. Thank you for all you do to support your children at home with their educational endeavors. One Word…. As I shared at Curriculum Night, we are engaging in an activity to emphasize the power of “one word” that can change one’s focus. I chal- lenged the staff to come up with one word that would define the purpose of our work this year. I asked the staff to think about the one word that helps them to create clarity, power, passion and laser-like focus to bring about positive change in their life. Each week on the Jaguar News, I will share three to four of our staff members’ “words” as a reminder of the character traits that help all of us stay focused on our work. Hello, Jaguars!

It’s hard to believe that we have already completed the first three weeks of school and that the Labor Day weekend is already upon us! We

have had a great start to our school year…..the energy around the school and in classrooms is amazing! Parents, I want to personally thank

everyone for coming to Curriculum Night this week. As always, we had a tremendous turnout of parental support. Parent support is such a big

component of your child’s educational experience. Thank you for all you do to support your children at home with their educational

endeavors.

One Word….

As I shared at Curriculum Night, we are engaging in an activity to emphasize the power of “one word” that can change one’s focus. I chal-

lenged the staff to come up with one word that would define the purpose of our work this year. I asked the staff to think about the one word that

helps them to create clarity, power, passion and laser-like focus to bring about positive change in their life. Each week on the Jaguar News, I

will share three to four of our staff members’ “words” as a reminder of the character traits that help all of us stay focused on our work. Stu-

dents did the same activity through advisement class. All of us have our “one word” that will drive our work so that we are all successful in

our personal endeavors.

“One Word Focus…”

Mrs. Opferman’s word of focus: “COURAGE”

Reasons I picked this word as my “one word” of focus: “I picked this word for two reasons. Firstly, being a courageous leader means taking

risks and trying new things to get to new heights. Sometimes that means doing things differently. Sometimes it means giving up some of my

control so that others can partake in decision making. Sometimes it means trying something out, even if I’m not sure of the outcome. Being

courageous means having a goal and a vision and being comfortable being the guiding force of the team….in this case our Webb Bridge team.

Secondly, I picked this word COURAGE because it is inside the word: ENCOURAGE. By definition, encourage means to inspire with cour-

age, spirit, or hope. There is so much positive that comes from encouraging others, from inspiring others. By encouraging others, it helps

people do a better job, makes the work more fun, and just feels good.

As I look at my own path of courageous leadership as principal of Webb Bridge Middle School, I invite you to join me on my journey.

Let’s try new things together, let’s celebrate when things go well and let’s encourage each other as we E3: Exemplify Excellence Every

Day!”

Each week, I will share the “words that drive us” from our staff members weekly as a part of the Friday Notes. I look forward to shar-

ing these inspirational words throughout the coming months.

School Governance Council:

This year, Webb Bridge Middle School is one of thirty-seven schools that are a part of Cohort 2 transitioning from the Local School Advisory

Council (LSAC) to the School Governance Council. As outlined on Fulton’s website, “The purpose of a School Governance Council (SGC) is

to provide parents, school staff, and community members with a leadership role in the governance of the school. We have created a School

Governance Council Overview for Cohort 2 schools to provide you with information about the responsibilities and function of these new gov-

ernance councils. On this page, you will also find a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the charter system in general and the

transition that the Cohort 2 schools will be making this year.” Please take a few minutes to become familiar with the concept, how a School

Governance Council supports the school, and the election process. See the website for parents interested in declaring candidacy.

School Safety:

School safety has been a big topic in the news these last couple of weeks. Please know that Fulton County is currently seeking the best option

to install additional security measures in all schools, specifically addressing the front entrances to the schools. Together, we will continue to

work and keep your children safe so that we can remain focused on learning. As I learn more about the rollout for front door security, I will

keep you apprised.

Parents, thank you again for your commitment and dedication to our school. Your partnership is key to the work we do each and every day.

Enjoy the long weekend.

Too Sick for School? When should the parent be called to come and pick up the student? Or

when should the student be kept at home due to illness? While each situa-

tion is individualized, the well-being of the student and the entire class are

considered. Here are some general guidelines recommended by Children’s

Healthcare of Atlanta that are used:

Students should not be at school with:

are followed by the clinic assistant in your child’s school. Please consult

Edmodo For Parents Teachers at Webb Bridge Middle School are utilizing the website Edmodo

to post classroom information. Parents can create one account and link to

all of their student’s account. This is great if you have more than one stu-

dent using Edmodo. Follow these simple steps:

Obtain the unique 6-digit Parent Code from your child’s account

(this is not the same as your child’s Group Codes). The Parent

Code is located on your child’s Edmodo Homepage on the bot-

tom left side panel.

After you have the parent code, go to www.edmodo.com. Currently,

you can not create your Account on the mobile or iPad Edmodo

app).

Click “I’m a Parent” and fill in the necessary information and Parent

Code. Note: Each child has a different Parent Code. You do

not need to share a Parent Account with another parent, relative,

or guardian. Multiple Parent Accounts can setup for one stu-

dent. Each Parent Account must have a different email address.)

4th Annual Windward Food Drive

Despite the rise in economic activity in Georgia, many

families in our community are finding it necessary to seek

aid from local charities to help make ends meet. North

Fulton Community Charities is a predominant charity at the

forefront of providing this aid. On an average day NFCC distributes food

to 175 to 200 families in need. Over the past three years the Windward

community has donated six tons of food and supplies to NFCC! This

year’s event will be held on Saturday, September 7th, 2013, from 9:00

a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the Boat Launch parking lot across from the Sports

Park. If you have any questions about this event, please email Mark

McKean at [email protected] or visit
