The Raleigh Studios is the longest continuously operating studio. It all began in February 1915 when the Famous Players Fiction Studios filmed on the lot.

The following July, William H. Clune purchased the 40 acres of land along the south side of Melrose Avenue between Bronson Avenue and Western Street. He built a sound stage with a glass roof, still in existance as Stage 3 on the current property.

After the formation of United Artists (by Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, D. W. Griffith, and Charlie Chaplin), the Douglas Fiarbanks Productions moved onto the lot in June 1919. Among other films, "Mark of Zorro" and "The Three Musketeers" were lensed there.

In 1922, CBC/Waldorf Comedies (later to be renamed as Columbia Pictures) resided on the lot, followed by United Studios in 1924. In 1926, Tec-Art Studios, Inspiration Pictures, Colorart Corp., Lillian and Dorothy Gish Productions, and Richard Barthelmess Productions resided on the lot. In 1927, "Ramona" was lensed on the lot. In 1931, Walt Disney used the Tec-Art Studio for his Mickey Mouse shorts.

In 1934, Prudential Studios took over the studio ("Hopalong Cassidy" and "Black Fox" were filmed there), while in 1941, Harry Sherman signed an exclusive contract to lease the studio. A new name appeared: California Studios.

In 1946, the name of the studio changed to Enterprise Studios, but with the bankruptcy of that studio, the lot was once again known as the California Studios. Many television shows utilized the lot during this time, such as " Life of Riley", " Cisco Kid", "Superman", "Gunsmoke", "Have Gun, Will Travel", and "Perry Mason".

Sometime in the 1960's, the lot's name again changed. This time to the Producer's Studio.

In 1979, Raleigh Enterprises purchased the property and renamed the studio Raleigh Film and Television Studios.

In 1982, a master plan was developed that included the addition of three sound stages (most likely built where the backlot sets stood).

The original address for the studio was 650 N. Bronson.

It was owned by J. S. Edwards and John Rounan. E. E. Rounan, Harry Edwards, and T. H. Glaze rounded out the studio heirarchy.

Formed to make only wild animal films, probably its most famous films were a series of over forty one-reel comedies starring the chimpanzees Sally and Napoleon.

FINE ARTS STUDIO4516 Sunset Blvd

Hollywood, California

Originally built around 1914/1915 at 4516 Sunset Blvd. and known as the Majestic-Reliance Studios, within a few years, it became the home of D. W. Griffith and Mutual Pictures. The lot was then renamed the Fine Arts Studio.

"The Birth of a Nation" (1915) and "Broken Blossoms" (1919) were partially or fully lensed at the studio. The sets for "Intolerance" (1916) were erected across the street where the Vista Theatre now stands (near the intersection of Hillhurst, Hollywood Blvd, and Sunset Drive.

Reopening Triangle-Fine Arts StudioMany Improvements Being Installed at the Famous Establishment at 4500 Sunset Boulevard.

Keen interest among Southern California motion picture folk has been aroused by the announcement that the Triangle-Fine Arts studio in Hollywood is soon to be reopened on a large scale. The studio formerly employed hundreds of performers, to say nothing of a large force of mechanics, clerks and laborers, and the news that it will become active again is welcomed in many quarters.

Recent additions to the Fine Arts studio at Hollywood have put that plant in excellent shape to take on a new lease of life under a new regime. A new central scene dock, 180 feet in length and 70 feet in width, has been built to house the elaborate interior settings that are to be utilized for forthcoming releases. On either side of the scene dock is a runway leading to each of the new stages, while a fleet of large baggage trucks with low wheels is employed to carry sets and properties to their destinations.

The new light studio just completed at the northern end of the property is up to the minute in every particular. It is said to have the highest roof and the best facilities for overhead lighting of any building of its kind on the Pacific Coast. Some idea of

its unusual construction may be gathered from the statement that there is a distance of 48 feet from the floor to the first roof girder. A new electric generator has also been installed, and under the guidance of efficiency engineers, the entire plant has been overhauled.

[June 9, 1917, The Moving Picture World]

In 1927, Tiffany-Stahl

Productions took over the studio. In 1930, it became simply the Tiffany

Studios and in 1932, it became the California Tiffany Studios.

With the demise of Tiffany around 1932/1933, the new owners of the lot renamed it Talisman Studios and rented the facility out.

In the 1950's, Columbia Studios gained ownership of the property.

An early 1960's fire destroyed virtually all of the buildings except for one sound stage which remained until 1975.

The former studio site is now a shopping center.

Keystone Studio - Then & Nowby Bryant Arnett

(click on any image for a larger picture)

Chaplin's autobiography describes the Mack Sennett Keystone Studio as existing in a suburb of Los Angeles called Edendale.  After searching through my maps for the city, I came to the conclusion that it simply no longer existed.  Then one day, while driving my usual daily commute down the "Glendale Corridor" where the 2 freeway turns into Glendale Blvd., I glanced over at a post office and noticed the sign on the front:  "U.S. Post Office - Edendale Station."  I could hardly believe that I had been driving right through Edendale for years!  Further research led me to dig up my old copy of Theodore Huff's book "Charlie Chaplin" and I discovered from it that the Keystone Studio was located at 1712 Allesandro Ave.  As it turns out, that particular stretch of Allesandro was now Glendale Blvd. (Allesandro continues a few blocks above and a few blocks below this location, which is now 1712 Glendale Blvd.).  Not only was I driving through Edendale, I was driving right through the center of the Keystone Studio!  The above photos are looking East from Effie Dr. looking across Glendale Blvd.  The large concrete building appears to be the only remaining piece

33

Page 34: Web viewUsed by permission of Mike & John Del Gaudio . E & R JUNGLE FILM COMPANY. The E & R Jungle Film Company was formed in July 1914 and remained ... Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

of the original studio.   Closer inspection reveals where the original windows have been plastered over.   The building is now part of a Public Storage company.  I wonder if the people working in the Jack in the Box realize that they might be flipping burgers in the exact spot where the Tramp was born!  I took the above Now photo from the roof of my car.   I am fairly sure that the original photo was taken from the rooftop of a house a bit further back and higher than my location.  I am certain the house was there at the time, since it looks very old and does not appear to have been painted since about 1914.

This shot is of the West side of Glendale Blvd.  The studio had expanded to both sides of the street.  The only surviving thing from the Then photo is the two story brick building in the distance. It has now been painted white and contains a very small, very old market and deli. From Chaplin's autobiography…

It was lunchtime and I watched the men and women in their makeup come pouring out of the bungalow, including the Keystone Cops. They crossed the road to a small general store and came out eating sandwiches and hot dogs. Some called after each other in loud, raucous voices: "Hey, Hank, come on!" "Tell Slim to hurry!"

Someday, I will have to stop and get a sandwich or a hot dog at this market.

This shot was taken from near the same vantage point as the first picture, but much further back, up a hillside on a narrow staircase that leads up to another street.  The house in the distance at the extreme left, behind the red Jack in the Box sign, is visible in both the Then and the Now shot. This entire area is full of very old buildings and houses.  I suspect that the entire area around the studio was used extensively for location shooting and could be a gold mine for future Then & Now adventures. Hmmmm….

CityDig: Where Were the Mack Sennett Studios?July 10, 2013 Nathan Masters Add a comment

In April, the newly renovated Mack Sennett Studios at Fountain and Effie in Silver Lake welcomed then-mayoral candidate Eric Garcetti for a campaign event. “This isn’t just a place, it’s really a symbol,” Garcetti remarked about the historic building, recently purchased by music producer Jesse Rogg. “People think Hollywood started in Hollywood. It actually started further east, here at Mack Sennett Studios.”

Sort of. Mack Sennett—a pioneering filmmaker best known for slapstick comedies like the Keystone Kops—did operate two Los Angeles studios in the early 20th century. One was indeed east of Hollywood, though neither was in Silver Lake.

Sennett first set up shop in 1912 in Edendale, a budding film colony located in what is today the neighborhood of Echo Park. Built on the site of an abandoned grocery store, Sennett’s Keystone studio repurposed existing structures. An old bungalow hosted the administrative offices. Actors dressed inside a barn. It was among these makeshift facilities that Charlie Chaplin first gesticulated for the camera, appearing in Keystone’s 1914 film Making a Living.

Sennett moved into his second studio in 1927. Located in what was then known as North Hollywood, his 20-acre San Fernando Valley studio lot, today the CBS Studio Center, became the centerpiece of a larger real estate development named Studio City.

The triangle-shaped lot in Silver Lake, meanwhile, may be steeped in early filmmaking history, but it bears only a tenuous connection to Mack Sennett. Built in 1916, it became the home of the Mabel Normand Feature Film Company after Normand—Sennett’s star actress and onetime fiancée—discovered the producer in a tryst with one of her close friends.

Normand became one of Hollywood’s first independent woman filmmakers. With funding from Sennett’s joint venture, the Triangle Motion Picture Company, she moved into the cramped but new production facility, which included a stage, dressing rooms, and a space for post-production. Though a success, her first film—1918’s Mickey—would be Normand’s only independent production.

Signing with Samuel Goldwyn, she soon vacated the studio. From 1918 to 1921 it hosted cowboy star William Hart’s production company and later the Triangle Drapery and Lighting Company. Sennett’s name didn’t become attached to the historic building until 1983, after nostalgia had swelled for Hollywood’s silent film era.
