Product Description

Previous to this lesson, students listened to and sang along with Pete the Cat and his book “Rocking In His School Shoes”. This lesson, they will sing along with Pete’s “The Wheels On the Bus”, an altered version of the orignial Wheels on the Bus song that many will be familiar with. After the read aloud, they will use their fingerprints to make their own cat to ride on Pete’s bus. The fingerprint art is in the style of artist Ed Emberley.

Lesson Procedure

To prepare for the lesson: Use bus clipart to create a long bus for each class, and cut out windows- laminate if you would like to use for next year.

1. Teacher asks students if they know the song, “The Wheels On The Bus”. Sing a little for the students.

2. Show first page of flipbook. Discuss how Pete may have changed the song a little, and how they need to listen closely to what you read/sing.

page’s lead-in. will listen to Pete the Cat: Wheels on the Bus and sing along after the teacher has given the lead-in line.

5. Use flipbook to lead the next part of the lesson. Students will be creating themselves as cats on Pete’s bus using fingerprint art in the style of Ed Emberley.

6. Using the flip book, ask students what was added to each fingerprint as it goes.

7. Students will remain at tables, looking at books to choose for check-out (procedures were discussed last time, and expectations are repeated)

8. While students are looking at books on the table to choose for check-out, students will be called back to make a fingerprint with the librarian. Librarian writes student’s name on the back of a small square that the student’s fingerprint will go on the front of.

9. Once lesson is completed, librarian will add catprints to windows of bus and display. Examples are in the flipbook.

Ideas: Hang in the hallway for back-to-school night, and see if parent’s can choose their child’s cat. (Teachers also created a fingerprint cat as the driver.)

Extension: Later in the year, we will revisit bus drivers as an occupation, and students will brainstorm questions they would like to ask a bus driver. We will try to interview a bus driver at that time- using video- and hopefully on a bus!!

Can you guess your child’s catprint?

Flip the bus up to check the name on the back of the cat-

print. Please excuse the misspelling of names-Pete(!) was in charge of that job.

Flip bus up to see if you chose the correct ‘cat-print’ as your child’s!
