Vasco da Gama
Vasco de Gama of Portugal made three voyages to India navigating
around the southern tip of the continent of Africa which was once known as the Cape of Storms. It is
now named the Cape of Good Hope.

Christopher Columbus
Seeking a western sea route to Asia for Spain, Italian navigator
Christopher Columbus landed on an island in what is now called the
Bahamas. This spurred a wave of European exploration of the North and South American continents.

Marco Polo
Traveling with his merchant father and uncle, Marco Polo lived for
many years in China. After returning to Italy, his experiences traveling in Asia were written into a book which inspired later explorers to search for trade routes to Asia. They hoped to find valuable goods such as silks
and spices there.

Amerigo Vespucci
A contemporary of Christopher Columbus, Vespucci explored the
northeastern and southeastern coasts of South America. He
referred to the continent as the “New World”. The American continents are
named for him.

Ferdinand Magellan
Born in Portugal, Magellan and his crew were the first Europeans to
traverse the Pacific Ocean. One of his ships made it all the way around
the world. It was the first ship in European history to do so. He sailed for Spain to find an eastern route to the East Indies in search of valuable
spices.

Cabeza de Vaca
Spanish explorer who traveled to what is now Florida with Panfilo de
Narvaez, Cabeza de Vaca was stranded in the Gulf of Mexico. He
lived with Native Americans in what is now Texas for many years before finally finding other Spaniards and
returning to Spain.

Francisco Vazquez de Coronado led an expedition through what is now
the American Southwest in search of treasure for the Spanish Empire.

Hernan Cortes
Hernan Cortes was a Spanish soldier who sailed to what is now
Cuba with Diego Velasquez in search of gold. He later sailed to the mainland of North America where he
led soldiers to conquer the great Aztec Empire in present day Mexico.

Francis Drake
English navigator, Francis Drake, was the first to European to see the Pacific Ocean by traveling over land through what is now Panama. Later, he sailed around the world in search of treasure for England. He explored much of the west coast of both North
and South America.

John Cabot
Upon learning of of Christopher Columbus’s first famous journey across the Atlantic, King Henry VII of England
sent Italian navigator, John Cabot to claim land for England in North America. He
attempted to find a Northwest Passage to Asia. Although he was unable to do this,
he explored much of what are now eastern Canada and the northeastern United
States.

Henry Hudson
Henry Hudson was commissioned by a British trading company to find a route through the Arctic to Japan and China hoping to trade for valuable silks and
spices. On one attempt, he reached the large island of Greenland. On a second
voyage, he reached islands north of Russia. Later, he sailed for a Dutch
company and explored much of the east coast of what is now the United States, including what is the New York river that was named for him. On his final voyage,
he explored a vast bay. This also bears his name – Hudson Bay.

Sir Walter Raleigh
Sir Walter Raleigh was an English explorer who went on several
expeditions to North America in search of land and riches for the British crown. He attempted to establish a colony on Roanoke
Island. Later he attempted to find El Dorado, the legendary City of Gold
in what is now Venezuela. Both attempts were unsuccessful.

Pedro Alvares Cabral
Cabral was a Portuguese navigator who was the first European to set foot on land in South America. He
stopped in present day Brazil on his second journey to India to establish trade agreements and bring back
valuable spices.

Giovanni de Verrazano
Verrazano was an Italian explorer who explored the Atlantic coast of the present
day United States for the country of France. He first landed in what is now
North Carolina, and then turned north and explored areas ranging from present day
New York to Newfoundland. He claimed all the land he found for France. Later, he
made other trips to the Americas including South America and the Caribbean.

Jacques Cartier
Jacques Cartier was a French explorer who traveled to North America in search of gold, spices, and a new route to Asia. He
made three journeys to North America where he explored areas of what is now
Canada including the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River. Native American guides helped him in his
explorations.

Hernando de Soto
Hernando de Soto was an explorer and soldier from Spain. He made several
journeys to the Americas. After his first journey to the West Indies and Central America, he gained wealth by trading Native Americans as slaves. He then
traveled to South America to conquer the Inca Empire in what is now Peru. Later, he
was sent to conquer land in what is now Florida. On this journey, he and his men became the first Europeans to site the

Juan Ponce de Leon
Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer who sailed with Christopher Columbus on his second journey to the Americas. He participated in conquering the island of
Hispaniola and founded the earliest European settlement in what is now Puerto
Rico. Later, he explored what is now Florida in search of the legendary Fountain of Youth. He unsuccessfully attempted to
establish a Spanish settlement in this area.
