Question 5 required candidates to listen to two short dialogues in which some friends were talking about their summer jobs and to select items referred to in the conversations from a number of listed possibilities. At Higher Tier over 93% of candidates scored the 4 marks available for this question. Difficulties mainly encountered for Foundation candidates were the misunderstanding of suelo organizar excursiones and tengo que archivar papeles.

Q required students to listen to some people talking about their jobs and select the correct one from those shown in the list above. Q(i) and Q(ii) were answered very well by most students whereas in Q(iii) many students misunderstood trabajo al aire construyendo viviendas thus missing the link with a builder and in Q(iv) quite a number of students failed to grasp ayudo a mis clientes cuando están en el extranjero, por ejemplo con el alojamiento and equate it with a holiday rep.

This question was similar in type to question 6. Candidates were required to listen to a number of teenagers describing aspects of ideal working conditions and to match these against a given a

number of headings. The recognition of opinions proved to be quite demanding for some candidates although most achieved at least one of the four marks available. Responses (a) and (b) were answered more successfully than (c) and (d). In (c) candidates failed to recognise hablar idiomas and in (d) many candidates correctly identified the noun ordenadores, but failed to match this to the key heading technology. Often this word was wrongly linked to uniform.

This question required candidates to be able to recognise opinions and details from a longer extract of dialogue which contained familiar language in a less familiar context. It was based on a dialogue in which Marcela was having an interview about going to college. The question proved to be quite challenging for some candidates. Answers (b) and (f) were more correctly achieved than items (e) and (g). In (e) maybe candidates frequently failed to link química with ciencias and in (g) candidates were frequently confused by no tengo experiencia de trabajo.

In this question which targeted A* students had to listen to two longer extracts of dialogue about preparing a CV and preparing for an interview. In the first part students had to choose the correct option from the choices given whilst in the second part the correct piece of advice had to be selected from the list provided. The question was challenging to many students as it clearly tested their knowledge and understanding of extended spoken Spanish. In the first extract students failed to understand incluir información sobre tu experiencia laboral previa, añadir toda la información posible, la ley, es esencial que sea, un amigo íntimo. In the second extract students had problems with es importante que sepas, para que llegues con bastante anticipación,atentamente, sé positivo, ten seguridad, despídete cordialmente.

Q8. 

This question targeted Grade A* and candidates had to listen to two extracts about Arturo and Verónica talking about work. The question was fairly challenging as candidates had to listen to extended extracts of Spanish which included some difficult structures and be able to identify the correct answers. In general candidate performance in Part A was much better than in Part B. In Part A at times too many boxes were crossed which led to loss of marks. Items of difficulty proved to be: me llevo genial con mis colegas, y eso hace que disfrute ejerciendo mi profesión, mi jornada laboral es larga, espero que en el futuro el sueldo sea más alto. Part (b)(i) was answered correctly by two thirds of the candidates although some candidates misunderstood the idea behind Este empleo no es lo que yo esperaba. In part (b)(ii) some candidates did not link Desde que comencé no he hecho nada difícil with the correct answer B and in part (b)(iii) me gustaría trabajar en algo creativo, en una empresa donde aprecien tu trabajo was difficult for some. In part (b)(iv) misunderstanding of He decidido mandar mi carta de renuncia esta semana prevented 41% of the candidates from scoring the mark. Many candidates however scored at least 4-5 marks and the most able 7-8 marks.
