9:20 am Keynote Speaker – Prof. Robin Ali.

Robin is Professor of Human Molecular Genetics at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, London, where he is also Head of the Department of Genetics. He holds faculty positions at UCL Institute of Child Health and the Biomedical Research Centre for Ophthalmology at the Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. The main focus of his research is the development of gene and cell therapy for the treatment of retinal disorders.

Topic - Gene therapy for retinal degenerations, an overview of the Moorfields Hospital clinical trials programme.

10:55 am Dr John De Roach and Ms Tina Lamey.

Dr De Roach is Principal Medical Physicist, Department of Medical Technology and Physics at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Perth WA and is Director of the Australian Inherited Retinal Disease Register and DNA Bank. Tina Lamey is the Senior Research Officer at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and has responsibility for the day to day operations of the IRDR/DNA Bank.

Topic - Australian Inherited Retinal Disease Register and DNA Bank progress.

11:25 am Michael Simpson Vision Australia.

Topic - Entitlements of a Vision Impaired Person.

12:00 pm Dr Lauren Ayton.

Dr Ayton is a clinician at the Centre for Eye Research Australia with a specific interest in low vision and ocular disease. As part of the Bionic Vision Australia consortium, she is the Clinical Research Co-ordinator for the bionic eye project. She is a qualified optometrist who has also worked in the areas of traumatic brain injury and eye movements.

1:40 pm Associate Prof. Erica Fletcher

A/Prof Fletcher heads the Visual Neuroscience Laboratory at the Dept of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Melbourne. She has a strong interest in the mechanisms of photoreceptor degeneration. She is a recipient of Retina Australia research funding.

Topic - The role of purines in photoreceptor death.

2:10 pm Concurrent Workshops Session 1

Workshop 1. What is it like to be blind? Regina Renfree (Guide Dogs).Preliminary to Sighted Guide Skills (Workshops Session 2): Suitable for family, friends and interested professionals with the expectation that you proceed with your partner onto the Sighted Guide Skills workshop in Session 2. (Spare partners available.) It is often noted that family members and eye health professionals have no training in assisting a vision impaired person effectively, with dignity and safety. This workshop provides this training opportunity.

Workshop 2. Retina Youth : “Me Too”.

An opportunity for youths and young adults to get together in a rare crowd where others know what it’s like to be vision impaired.

Workshop 3. Vision impaired people and the kitchen. Vision Australia.

Helpful hints for working in the kitchen when vision impaired, and information about useful tools. Suitable for vision impaired registrants.

Workshop 1. Sighted Guide skills. Regina Renfree (Guide Dogs).Suitable for vision impaired registrants, their families and Professionals.

Workshop 2. Ophthalmic issues and gene therapy. Prof. Robin Ali.

Workshop 3. Youth issues. (Genetic, financial advice).

4:40 pm Introduction of Retina Australia Youth Representatives.

4:50 pm Close of session; housekeeping for Evening Events.

6:30 for 7:00 pm Canapes prior to Gala Dinner.

Topic - Stem cell therapy for retinal degenerations, a vision for the future.

9:45 am Dr Una Greferath

Una is with the Dept of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Melbourne where much of her work involves aspects of the development of the retina. A recipient of Retina Australia research funding.

Topic - The role of histamine in the development of the retina.

10:15 am Prof. Robyn Guymer.

Head of Macular Research Unit, Centre for Eye Research Australia, University of Melbourne where her research is mainly in the area of macular degeneration. A recipient of Retina Australia funding.

Topic - What influences the outcome of treatment in neo-vascular and age related macular degeneration.

10:45 am Housekeeping. Morning tea.

11:15 am Assoc. Prof. Robyn Jamieson.

Robyn is involved with the disciplines ofPaediatrics, Genetic Medicine & Ophthalmology at the Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney, and is Head of Developmental Genetics Research at the Children’s Hospital Westmead NSW. A recipient of Retina Australia funding.

Topic - Investigation for novel disease genes in cone-rod dystrophies.

11:45 am Prof. David Hunt.

David is Winthrop Professor at the School of Animal Biology, University of Western Australia. A considerable amount of his time is involved with research into dominant macular dystrophies. A recipient of Retina Australia funding.

Topic – Dominant inherited macular dystrophies

Including the role of novel mi|RNA in the dominant syndromic disorder of macular dystrophy and split hand/foot malformation.

Workshop 1. The impact of vision impairment on the family. For persons who are carers or members of families with affected persons. An opportunity for the family members of vision impaired persons to talk about their issues. (Lead by a professional counsellor).

Workshop 2. Ophthalmic Issues, stem cell therapy. Prof Robin Ali.

Workshop 3. Latest technology for vision impaired people.

Vision Australia and Guide Dogs show the latest in phones, iPads, canes and other helpful products for the vision impaired registrant and interested eye professionals.

Workshop 4. Retina Youth: VIP Pilates – Postural awareness techniques to aid the vision impaired, and an opportunity for friendship!
