Challenge: Can you make sure each sentence has an expanded noun phrase? E.g. The enchanted staircase

Here is a sentence starter written by another pupil.

'I pushed open the old creaky door and looked inside. What a sight met my eyes!'

The character is called Dinah and she’s just opened a door in an abandoned house that she has broken into.

TASK: Write the next 3-5 sentences to complete the first paragraph.

What does she see?

What does she do next?

How is she feeling?

Does the door close behind her?

Is she stuck in this magical universe?

Challenge: Can you add speech into this paragraph where she is talking to herself?

E.g. “I wonder what’s up there?” Dinah thought to herself.

Today your task is to plan your story.

Characters (who?)

Setting (where?)

Introduction and build up (How does she find the door and what does she do next?)

Problem (How does she meet the tiger? What problems arise?)

Solution (How is the problem fixed?)

Ending (How does she get home?)

Challenge: Can you create a list of 5 adverbs that you will use in your story? E.g. suspiciously, angrily, curiously.

Use your plan to write your story.

You will need:

Capital letters and full stops*

Paragraphs (if possible)

Expanded noun phrases e.g. An enormous, dangerous tiger.

Fronted adverbials (time, place or manner - see above)

Adjectives - describing words

Here are some sentence starters:

Bravely, * began to walk up the stairs…

After a while, she realised…

Challenge: Can you add adverbs and hyphenated adjectives into your writing?
