Required Textbook:

Sustainable Construction: Green Building Design and Delivery by Charles Kibert (4th ed., 2016).

Course Description This course introduces students to assessment tools, design and construction considerations, and operating planning requirements for sustainable enterprises. Students will learn about the ecological and economic benefits of sustainability/green practices. Additionally, they will learn how product, process, and service decisions affect sustainable enterprise concepts. Today's enterprises are considering their social and environmental challenges, marketing and supply chain decisions, and recycling, reusing, reconditioning, and other product and service decisions in order to realize a natural competitive advantage within their operating strategies. This course will focus on best practices, case studies, evolving trends, and experimental efforts regarding sustainable/green systems.

Prerequisite:

Admission to Business Administration BS, Management and Organizational Leadership BAS, or Sustainability Management BAS. 47 contact hours.

Course Major Learning Objectives:

1. The student will gain an understanding of the issues and opportunities enterprises face in an energy and environmentally conscious operating environment.

2. The student will examine strategies for developing energy and environmental considerations in the design of facilities, products, services, and processes.

3. The student will analyze how supply chain decisions affect society, impact the environment, and consume our resources.

4. The student will define various drivers and practices used to develop sustainable enterprises.

5. The student will compare and evaluate initiatives and practices used to change behaviors and pursue improvement initiatives that support sustainability/green concepts.

Course Content:

The course is broken down into 8 weekly segments designed to provide the student with an overview of sustainable enterprise planning fundamental practices. A variety of learning activities are provided to help the student gain a unique set of competencies to effectively respond to this dynamic and evolving field.

1. Lectures – Audio-video online lectures (6) guide the students in understanding and integrating weekly lessons. Lectures will guide the students in further understanding key concepts, principles, techniques, and current issues faced in respective fields. Online students are required to watch these lectures while it is optional for blended students. Further guidance on the assignment series project is also discussed in the lecture series.

Page 3: webapps.spcollege.edu  · Web viewWednesday and Friday noon-6pm, but please coordinate meeting times in advance to deconflict from other scheduled meetings with students (e.g., weekly

2. Readings – Students are assigned weekly readings from the textbook, along with supplemental articles and website links to help develop a more rounded knowledge base on the concepts and technologies associated within this broad field of sustainability management practices. While the textbook emphasizes sustainability in the built environment, the supplemental materials will extend this knowledge into broader enterprise management needs.

3. Videos - Additional videos are also provided to supplement lectures and readings in order to further understand key concepts regarding sustainable enterprise management needs. These videos include case studies, additional applications, industry expert interviews on evolving concepts and technologies, etc.

4. Homework - There are five (5) homework assignments to help students prepare better for tests and the assignment series project. These assignments are untimed and are focused on synthesizing the chapter reading and evaluating further how to critically think about the concepts in each week's lesson. Students have one submission and all homework will close on their deadline (Saturday at 11:55PM EST, one day prior test deadline).

5. Tests/Final Exam – There are seven (7) weekly tests on textbook readings, supplemental readings and videos, and online lectures to assess student's knowledge gained in regards to the key concepts associated to sustainable enterprise planning and management practices. Students have 40 minutes to answer 20 questions in each test. There are hundreds of questions in the test bank and students are able to retake the test (getting different questions) three (3) times to improve their grade. The maximum score is recorded into the grade book. All tests will close at their deadline (Sunday at 11:55PM EST). Furthermore, there is a comprehensive Final Exam that is timed with only one submission in Week 8 that will close at the deadline (Wednesday at 11:55PM EST). Students should review weekly tests after their deadline to review errors and prepare for the final exam.

6. Assignment Series – Students will complete a sustainability mini-assessment during this course (with four submission points in Week 2, 3, 6, and 7). Students will work with a team on these assignments. Students will select a project to conduct a sustainability mini-LEED assessment on, as well as they will conduct further research to plan a strategy to improve sustainability performance for that selected project. This is a realistic managerial scenario to help the students further evaluate how to apply the concepts learned in this course, as well as to develop critical thinking skills associated with sustainable enterprise planning and management practices. Students will prepare a workshop on the results of this assignment to share with other students at SPC in Week 7 in face-to-face or via WebEx live. Workshops will be recorded and posted on the Net Impact website for future students.

7. LEED Green Associate Test Preparation (optional, but highly encouraged). There is a free (normally $350), one-day or three-evening test prep workshop at the end of the semester that is designed to prepare you to take the LEED Green Associate exam. Since the content of this course provides the basic background for the exam, and students are given special pricing ($100), all students in the Sustainability Management program should plan to get LEED Green Associate accredited as soon as possible after the course – it is a powerful resume builder. The program’s ultimate goal is to prepare students for LEED AP. Students in the Sustainability track would greatly benefit from the accreditation, as well.

Grading Policies

Students should review the instructions and grading assessment rubrics included with assignments. Grading assessment rubrics will be used for corresponding submissions and the instructor will send additional remarks or feedback for all submissions within 7 days after the due date.

Incomplete grades fall under the Incomplete Grades and Procedures of the college. Per SPC policy, for an incomplete grade to be assigned, the student must provide documented evidence of the reason(s) or circumstance(s) for the extension, have a minimum of 80% of the course completed, be considered in good standing in the course (i.e. C or better), and acknowledge in writing the plan to finish the necessary work. In the event of an “I”, the instructor will provide the terms for all required work to be completed; no later than the end of the sixth week of the next semester. After that time, a grade of “F” (or higher if the work that has been submitted is adequate to justify the higher grade) will be assigned. Students with anything less than 80% of the course completed will result in the appropriate letter grade being recorded.

Communication Policies

Students should always practice professional communications not only with their professor, but also with college administration and their peers in the course (disrespectful and disruptive students may be removed from the course by disciplinary action which may include suspension or expulsion from the college). Blended students may not use any electronic devices during class meetings unless for academic purposes. Professional communications should be used at all times which includes using an appropriate subject in the title, as well as a greeting or salutation and closing signature in emails (not doing so is only suitable for family and friends). Please understand employers are asking SPC to work with students on netiquette to help students grow better communication skills for a successful career (see link for more tips as well as the guidelines in the syllabus addendum).

Attendance Policies

As the syllabus addendum states, instructors will verify and report student attendance in the first two weeks. Students will be classified as ‘No Show’ if blended students do not attend their physical meeting or if online students do not provide any submissions for each week. Students with attendance issues in both Week 1 and 2 will be administratively withdrawn from the course and will receive a grade of W. As the syllabus addendum further states, students with financial aid will be responsible for paying for the class if they have attendance issue these first two weeks.

Please understand skipping any of the assigned actions items and submissions as shown in the syllabus schedule may result in students not being successful (earn 0 points) in the course. However more importantly students will not learn the week’s objectives skipping these requirements. Later week lessons build upon prior week lessons typically leaving students struggling if they skip the action items in a course.

Further in the week following the last date to withdraw with a W (see academic calendar), instructors will report students who are not actively participating in the course. Students that have not completed the majority of the assigned graded submissions in Week 3 through Week 5 will be reported as not actively participating in the course and will receive a grade of WF in that following week. As the syllabus addendum states, students may withdraw themselves prior the last date for a W (before

completing 60% of the class), however if students receive any form of federal financial aid they will be required to repay a portion (please speak to a financial aid counselor, see www.spcollege.edu/getfunds). Students should review this college-wide policy further to understand GPA and financial consequences.

No late submissions will be accepted unless the student provides a documented excuse (i.e. family death certificate, doctor's note, etc.). After verification of this documentation a late submission may be accepted as long as completed within one week from the due date. Advance notice should be given to the instructor whenever possible to arrange for further alternatives. Please note computer problems, travel, and lack of planning do not constitute an acceptable excuse for not meeting a deadline. Students should review the syllabus schedule and plan their time (minimum 15 hours per week per course) to complete the action items on-time (all deadlines are by 11:55PM EST).

Computer Requirements:

Students should have regular access to a computer that is connected to the Internet. It is strongly recommended that students have a broadband (high-speed) internet connection such as DSL or a cable modem. When viewing online videos or taking online quizzes/tests and doing homework, students should have an internet connection that is stable and will not drop their connection. Students without a stable high-speed internet connection should consider making arrangements to use alternative means (i.e.St. Petersburg College library or a similar facility) where a stable high-speed internet connection is available. Please note student computer problems do not constitute an acceptable excuse for missing a submission deadline (procrastinating until the due date increases risks that students may miss or do poor on required submissions).

Students are responsible for making sure their computers are compatible to the system requirements. Internet browser use and settings, security and virus protection software settings, necessary plug-ins and software requirements, and other computer requirements today require students to assure the computer they are using for their studies will appropriately support these systems and course needs to be successful. Students should contact SPC Technical Support if they need further assistance to get anything in this course to run appropriately on their computer.

SPC Technical Support Desk Call Center: http://www.spcollege.edu/helpdesk/

A standard file format applies to submissions in the College of Business to support file compatibility, sharing, and commenting needs. Students are required to submit all assignments in Microsoft Office formats (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft formats). Other formats may have compatibility issues or instructor feedback in comments may not be viewable by students. Students can access MySPC to get Windows and MS Office (FREE, see http://www.spcollege.edu/microsoft). As well as Office 365 online access to support student email, one drive, etc.

It is required that students must have access to a web camera and headset microphone to support video submissions. Students should arrange for the necessary equipment if they intend to earn full credit for those submissions or plan to attend a blended class in-person or other alternative (see instructor, i.e. Skype, office hours, etc.).

Academic Honesty

College-wide polices that all students agree to adhere to upon enrollment at SPC in every course. Students should closely read the policies and examples as violations regarding cheating, plagiarism, bribery, misrepresentation, conspiracy, fabrication, collusion, duplicate submission, academic misconduct, improper computer/calculator use, improper online, TeleWeb, and blended course use, disruptive behavior, and confidentiality will not be accepted in this course. This academic honesty policy is located in the the Course Home News, SPC Resources in every class.

As highlighted in the syllabus addendum, failure to meet this honor code will result in academic and disciplinary action. This may mean a zero on an assignment (reported to the Dean), an F in the course, or even expulsion from the College. As members of the College community, students also have an ethical obligation to report violations of the SPC academic honesty policies they may witness. In addition, students that receive assistance from a tutor must ensure that any work submitted in class is the student’s own.
