This was extremely useful to the development of my project as it made editing so much more efficient and improved the final product. Features such as markers, which allowed me to know what I needed to do and where I needed to move things easily within the timeline, or if I’m watching my project through I can mark where I notice a problem so I can find it quickly and fix it. This site gave simple explanations of the 3 types of music video that there are. It was very useful because it showed me how each type is typically used. It let me think about what I really wanted to achieve by doing a music video and what my options were. It helped me decide to do a purely narrative music video and set out what I need to include to do this.

This site was useful because it gave a lot of points that can suggest you have a drinking problem, points describing and explaining the signs and symptoms of alcohol abuse, the different stages of an alcoholic, how it effects people around the person with alcohol abuse. It gave it ideas as to what actions I can include in the video to portray Jake as an Alcoholic.

This site was useful because it very simply and plainly showed the motives and reasoning behind drinking, which can lead to alcohol abuse. The ideas of relieving pain (emotionally) and escaping sadness and loneliness are what I decided to use in my video from this article.

I found this video useful because it gave me an insite into how a real alcoholic acts, and it gave me a bunch of ideas of actions to portray such as suffering from anxiety, cheating, yelling at his girlfriend, and blacking out.

This was a mix of a narrative and a performance based video. This was a useful watch because it showed how a performance video can be fitted with a narrative video, and not only that, but have parts of the performance be a part of the story line in the narrative. This really expanded my ideas and allowed me to think a bit more outside the box.

This was entirely a narrative video based around the title of the song only, as it didn’t really relate to many of the lyrics in the song. This was useful because it showed me how a music video can be fitting for the song even if it doesn’t relate to the lyrics at all and still make it an interesting piece to watch.

This was a very information filled page, simply showing me what types are shots and movements are used in almost any media creation. I found this very useful because it also gave me ideas on what kind of effect each shot can give and what message it can portray, which gave me an idea on what shots are best to use. It also helped planning of my storyboard.

Research being used in development:

My research was useful throughout my project, once I thought of my own initial idea, the research helped me build upon it. My research into the typical actions of an alcoholic gave me ideas as to how I interpreted the song, as well as what actions I should use to portray what I had interpreted. My research into camera angles and movement helped me in the pre-production of my project, the storyboard, and the recording as they gave me ideas on what interesting shots I could have and what effect they create. Looking at other music videos was useful in development as it showed me what ideas work well, the kinds of lighting and themes that could be used, and how each type of music video is portrayed and what makes them successful. Doing some research into how to effectively use my editing software really helped as it sped up my production edit, made it look a lot neater, and gave me time to improve my work in other areas.

Suitable for my target audience?

Based on EDEN’s typical audience of 16-24 year olds, and my own analytics that my video will be mainly received by 18-24, my target audience is 16-24 year olds, mostly males.

I made my video suitable for my target audience by mainly surveying that age range and asking what they mainly wanted from a music video. They told me they wanted a narritive story.

They also said they associate things such as problems, forgetting things, acting differently, DUI’s, dizzyness, and loss of control. All of these things I had included in my video.

I know applying this research was useful in my project as I received very positive like to dislike ratio, and it received more views than the amount of sub-boxes it reached so it was either played more than once by people (which means they enjoyed it) or it was shared around, as you can see here:

How important research was:For developing my initial idea, my research helped me make my mind up for what type of music video to do as I wasn’t sure to start with, but other than that my initial idea was pretty consistent from the start. The research was very important for developing the video/ product production as it helped me to create it in a way where I could make the story clearer and fill gaps in the plot, the best ways to shoot certain parts, and just interesting ideas. It helped in the post production also as it sped up the process made it turn out at a higher quality than it would’ve done if I hadn’t done any research. It also allowed me more time for work on other areas of the project. My peer assessments showed that I had used the research I’d been given by my target audience effectively. They told me the plot was very clear and easy to understand and they just over all enjoyed it which means I done things right by listening to what they told me and did what they wanted.

Other sources I could have looked at:I feel like I could’ve looked at more stories of other alcoholic stories or people who have had to deal with an alcoholic. I also feel I should have looked at analytics from other music videos to see their audience and see how it was received. I could have looked at other music videos of EDEN’s, either official or un-official. I feel like these could have helped give my video more of a story as well as use some methods from other music videos as a lot of EDEN’s songs are familiar and could’ve been transferred over which would have improved my production quality in my opinion.

How successful my research was:I think that my research was extremely successful and I feel like my project would have turned out very bad if no research was done because my story was built on the research, the quality was raised by the research I had carried out. It’s made me realise that research is incredibly important because

it helps to bring the best possible outcome to give to your target audience and research itself can’t do any harm at all so it’s always worth doing.

Next time I carry out research for a future project, this is what different ways I’d do it:

Create more in depth surveys so I can find out what more the audience wants. I would do research into discovering who my target audience is for a particular project. I could also carry out interviews so I can find out exactly what information I’m getting from a

specific demographic. Watching films that are related to the project I’m working on and taking notes of their use of

lighting, camera angles, style of recording, sounds and ambience, ect.. I could also do research into video editing and processing techniques to make my videos

look higher quality and more professional.
