In the Holy Name of Jesus Christ, Welcome to Saint Thomas’ Church!

We are a lively, active community of faith. We strive to be a loving congregation, committed to welcoming ALL and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our Church building is a beautiful and distinguished historic site. We invite you to read more about us. There is information on our Literature Table at the back of the Church and on our website. We are happy that you are here with us today! Please learn more about our worship from the notes below.

ABOUT THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH and OUR WORSHIP The Episcopal Church, USA, is the American branch of the 85-million member

worldwide Anglican Communion – those Churches born out of The Church of England. Of the world’s 2.2 billion Christians, we are the third largest body.

In our worship, there is strong emphasis upon congregational participation. The Clergy and the congregation together conduct our services. Worshippers are involved participants, not mere spectators. Please use The Book of Common Prayer (red), this Service Program and The Hymnal (blue) to worship God with joy and enthusiasm! Join in the responses, sing along on the Hymns. Share in praising and thanking our loving God for all His blessings!

Holy Communion is open to ALL Baptized persons, regardless of Church affiliation. Our Ushers will guide you forward at the appointed time. You may kneel or stand for Communion. Read more about this in the Communion section of this Service Booklet.

Our 10:A.M. service and many of our special services are live streamed on Facebook, then archived for later viewing. Note that you may be on camera at some point!

Our accessible entrance and restroom are on the west (left) side of the Church building.

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Let us pray.

The Collect of the Day (Proper 27-C) O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the

works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Old Testament Lesson: Haggai 1:15b – 2:9

A Reading from the Book of Haggai. In the second year of King Darius, in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the prophet Haggai, saying: Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say, Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing? Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the LORD; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the LORD; work, for I am with you, says the LORD of hosts, according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear. For thus says the LORD of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land; and I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendor, says the LORD of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says

the LORD of hosts. The latter splendor of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity, says the LORD of hosts.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Psalter: Psalm 98 – CHANTED by the CHOIR – Lector & People are SEATED. 1 Sing to the LORD a new song, * for he has done marvelous things. 2 With his right hand and his holy arm * has he won for himself the victory. 3 The LORD has made known his victory; * his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. 4 He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, * and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. 5 Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands; * lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. 6 Sing to the LORD with the harp, * with the harp and the voice of song. 7 With trumpets and the sound of the horn * shout with joy before the King, the LORD. 8 Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, * the lands and those who dwell therein. 9 Let the rivers clap their hands, * and let the hills ring out with joy before the LORD, when he comes to judge the earth. 10 In righteousness shall he judge the world * and the peoples with equity.

The Epistle: II Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17

A Reading from the Second Letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians.

As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here.

Page 6: €¦  · Web viewWe are a lively, active community of faith. We strive to be a loving congregation, committed to welcoming ALL and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our Church

Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was with you? But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he call you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. Now may our Lord Jesus himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort you hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel: Saint Luke 20:27-38

The Congregation remains standing and faces the Deacon or Priest, who reads the Gospel.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

ome Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and asked him a question, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the

widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.” Jesus said to them, “Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy of a place in that

age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.”

Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, in whose hands are the living and the dead: We give youthanks for all your servants who have laid down their lives in the service of ourcountry. Grant to them your mercy and the light of your presence; and give us such a lively sense of your righteous will, that the work which you began in them maybe perfected; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People: It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day of the week overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection, opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Hosanna in the highest.

The People kneel and the Celebrant continues

oly and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

The Celebrant and People sing: Setting: Mass of Creation

Christ has died. Christ has died.Christ is risen. Christ is risen.Christ will come again. Christ will come again!

The Celebrant continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfullyreceive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with the ever-Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Thomas, Saint Mark, Saint Andrew, Saint John, Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Patrick and all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory are yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

PARISH NEWS for 22nd PENTECOST/VETERANS’ DAY – November 10, 2019

AS WE MARK VETERANS’ DAY, 2019, we will recognize each veteran in attendance this morning. We will also give thanks to God for all those veterans, both living and dead, who have faithfully served our country in times past. We will pray for those currently in military service. And our service will include patriotic hymns and anthems. Enjoy this special day!

Tomorrow, on actual Veterans’ Day, at 11:A.M. Fr. Allan will see that St. Thomas’ joins with other Churches across the nation in tolling our bell. The bell will be run 21 times, similar to a 21-gun salute. Tomorrow marks the 101st Anniversary of the end of World War I. The armistice, ending what was called “the war to end all wars”, was signed on the 11th day of the 11th month at 11:A.M. We are proud to be part of this observance.

OUR ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP CANVASS to fund all the vital ministries of St. Thomas’ Parish for the approaching New Year continues. Have we received your 2020 Pledge Card? If not, please complete it today and place it in the Offering Plate. A card is enclosed with this bulletin, and there are pens at the Baptistery. Unused cards may be left on the Literature Table for later use. Thank you for your faithfulness to Christ and His Church! Please strive to continue this in the New Year!

And check out the “Shining our Light” message on today’s insert!

ISC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DEBBIE COHILL WILL SPEAK to our Adult Education Class today, offering us the latest information on the vital outreach ministries of the Interfaith Service Coalition. St. Thomas’ has been deeply involved in the ISC since its beginning 30 years ago, and we are proud to continue that involvement today. The year 2019 has been a banner one for the ISC, with the opening last April of Martha’s House. Come and be informed about this important work for Jesus Christ. We meet in the Lower Parish Hall right after the 10:A.M. service. Coffee is served.

ALL ACOLYTES ARE EXPECTED TO MEET TODAY with Acolytes’ Master Phoebe Hogbin and Fr. Allan. We will begin at 12:Noon [after Sunday School], sharing pizza in the Parish Hall then moving over to the Church for some important training. Please, let’s have all Acolytes present!

DEACON KIRK IS AWAY FROM US TODAY, assisting The Rev’d Canon Scott Slater with a Parish Visitation to St. Mark’s, Lappans. Archdeacon Jane O’Leary likes to have Deacons assist Bishop Sutton and Canon Slater with their visitations, helping to promote the ministry of the Diaconate across the Diocese. Kirk will return to us next Sunday.

BISHOP SUTTON RECENTLY ANNOUNCED his choice for a new Assisting Bishop for our Diocese. We are delighted to tell you that The Right Rev’d Robert W. Ihloff, 13th Bishop of Maryland (retired) has graciously agreed to take on this important ministry. Bishop Ihloff will make Parish Visitations, will work with the Ordination process through the Commission on Ministry, will work closely with smaller congregations and generally assist as needed. Bishop Ihloff retired as our Diocesan Bishop in 2007. Since then he served for a period as Interim Rector at The Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore and for a time was Assisting Bishop in the Diocese of Virginia. Bishop Ihloff has had a long and distinguished ministry. He and his wife, Nancy, reside in Baltimore and have two married children and six grandchildren. We are so blessed to have him serve our Diocese in this new capacity! He will begin his time of service in early January.

THE REV’D VIRGINIA CARR, 64, HAS BEEN CALLED to serve as Priest-in-Charge of St. Mark’s, Lappans. She comes to Maryland from St. Peter’s, Westfield, New York, where she has served as Rector for the past nine years. Rev’d Virginia and her family have experience in missionary work for the Episcopal Church in Central America. She and her husband, Owen, have three grown children and are now raising two adopted sons – Justin, age 8, and Nathaniel, age 5. She is expected to begin her service at St. Mark’s in early December. Her ministry will enable St. Mark’s to postpone their search for a new Rector to succeed Rev’d Anne, who retired on June 30.

CURSILLO – Spanish for “little course” is a special weekend designed to enrich and deepen the Christian faith of the participants. Cursillo weekends are held in Dioceses across the nation and usually take place twice a year at Claggett here in the Diocese of Maryland. Through the years, numerous St. Thomas’ folks have been to Cursillo, including Fr. Allan, Rev’d Anne and Deacon Kirk. It is a wonderful experience of God’s love! Maryland’s 115th Cursillo is in progress this weekend, and we are happy that parishioner Jennifer Walter is among the participants! Pam Mann is serving on the leadership team, and Deacon Kirk is serving as Jennifer’s sponsor. Please pray for all involved – that they may indeed be touched and uplifted by Christ and His Spirit this weekend.

REV’D ANNE IS AT ST. ANDREW’S, CLEAR SPRING, again today to serve as Celebrant and Preacher for their Sunday Eucharist. Fr. Steve and Melanie are, later today, returning from their pilgrimage to the Holy Land. They left last Saturday and have spent the week visiting many of the sacred sites of the land of Jesus. Fr. Steve has posted photos of the trip on St. Andrew’s Facebook page, and he and Melanie have also offered regular video reports which can be viewed on Facebook. We pray for their safe travel as they return home, and we look forward to hearing more about their experiences during their pilgrimage.

DANIEL WEATHERHOLT HAS BEEN APPOINTED to serve on the Music and Worship Committee for the 2021 General (National) Convention of the Episcopal Church, to be held in Baltimore in early July, 2021. In preparation for this big event, Daniel will participate in several meetings held by video conferencing. Daniel, eldest son of Fr. Allan & Rev’d Anne, is Director of Music & Organist at St. Peter’s Church, Poolesville (Montgomery County). He is married to The Rev’d Elizabeth Sipos, Rector of St. John’s Church, Kingsville, where they reside.
