Session 2 – Making Pairs

If you can’t get out on a walk to find natural objects then you can find things around the house that can be pairs. You could find 2 building blocks that are the same, 2 socks the same, 2 pens etc.

Challenge

Can you draw a Chinese New Year dragon that has 4 pairs of legs? That will be 8 legs altogether. You could decorate the dragon by drawing lots of number 8s all over it to make it look like scales. Could you add 8 spikes to the back of your dragon?

Session 3 – Combining 2 groups

Have a go at completing the activity by drawing your own picture.

Can you write all the numbers from 1 to 10. Which do you find the most tricky? Can you try writing it in different places like on a mirror, in some soil, with some chalk or paint?

Colour and cut out the dragon mask in your pack. Use the strips of cellophane and tissue paper to add streamers to your mask. Can you make up your own dragon dance while wearing your mask?

Use the chopsticks and the challenge cards and in your home learning pack to have a go at the activities. You will find pasta, paper clips and pom poms in your pack to help you.

Day 4

Lesson 4 – Reading words

Create a Chinese food menu. Look through your storybook of Dragons in the City and use your mini book to draw the different special foods you can see that they have throughout Chinese New Year. Can you label each of the different foods? You can use the Chinese food mat in your pack to help you.

Cook your noodles with an adult and let them cool.

Lesson 5

Choose one of the animals to draw in your book and tell someone in your family all about it. Now make a list of the things you have learnt about it. If you choose a panda you might write the sounds you can hear in the words black, white, fluffy or write ‘It is big’. Use your sound mat and animal word mat to help you.

Session 5 – Adding More

Play the game with someone in your house.

Challenge

Put your Chinese number cards 0-10 in a bag and take them out two at a time. Which number is more and which number is less?

Make a concertina dragon

1. Find your dragon head, feet and tail. Colour these in using bright colours and cut them out when you have finished.

2. Use the strip of red paper to make the dragon’s body. You need to fold the paper backwards and forwards to make a concertina, as you did for your gingerbread man’s arms and legs.

3. Stick the head, feet and tail to the concertina body.

4. Add a paper straw to the back of the head and tail to help your dragon move.
