The SLHS Choir Event Calendar will be updated throughout the school year with additional opportunities. The dates above should not change. However, if changes become necessary, the most current dates can be found on the SLHS Choirs Google

Calendar, which is always available at www.slhschoirs.com.

Attendance Policies

Choir is a co-curricular activity, meaning that we have required events outside of the school day. For returning members, this is nothing new, as you have attended dress rehearsals, concerts, and festivals in past years. For new members, this

6

Page 7: €¦  · Web viewThe success of our events relies heavily on good communication between the teacher, student, and parent. Please make sure that you are checking the website regularly,

may be a new practice. All of our events are graded events and serve as a percentage of our group exams. It is very important that all members and their families review the choir calendar and note conflicts as early as possible.

The following is a description of the Attendance Policies for the SLHS Choirs:

1. On the calendar, events in GRAY are required events for all students. The far right column indicates who is expected to be in attendance. The rest of the calendar contains optional events (Honors Choir, Field Trips, Solo & Ensemble, etc.).

2. EXCUSED ABSENCE FROM CLASSWhen a student has an excused absence from class, they can make up the daily participation points through individual after-school practice. The student must practice for 60 minutes per day missed and complete an SLHS Choir Practice Journal available in the choir room and at www.slhschoirs.com. Practice Journals must be submitted within one week of the absence to receive credit. Excused absences include all non-choir events (doctor’s appt, non-choir field trips, AP exams, etc.). Planned Absence Forms are not needed for individual absences from class.

3. UNEXCUSED ABSENCE FROM CLASSZero credit is received. Practice Journals are still encouraged to keep up with choir but are not accepted for credit.

4. EXCUSED ABSENCE FROM DRESS REHEARSALS/PERFORMANCESExcused absences from events are rare, as families have the calendar early in the year so as to minimize conflicts. When a student is excused from a required event because of one of the following reasons, they will have the opportunity to make-up full credit through an alternate assignment. Examples of excused absences include: Student illness, death in the immediate family, religious observance, suspension, legal proceedings, or planned absence. Should a family vacation conflict with a dress rehearsal or performance, the student should submit a Conflict Form to the director at least three weeks in advance. Forms are available in the choir room and at www.slhschoirs.com.

5. UNEXCUSED ABSENCE FROM DRESS REHEARSALS / PERFORMANCESZero credit is received. Examples of unexcused absences include: Oversleeping, employment of the student, drivers training, transportation problems, driver’s education, doctor or dentist appointments not cleared in advance.

6. ATHLETIC / OTHER CO-CURRICULAR CONFLICTSWe are proud to have members and captains of various sports teams who also sing in the SLHS Choirs. We have had countless singer-athletes in the past who have participated fully in both activities without incident. The student is entirely responsible for managing both schedules and bringing conflicts to the attention of both the director and coach as soon as possible. As a general rule, performances take priority over practices and games over rehearsals. In the event that a performance and game should occur at the same time, a resolution will be found between the student, parents, teacher, and coach (SIP Committee, 10/05). A student cannot be penalized by either teacher or coach because of such a conflict. Student failure to address scheduling conflicts in a timely manner, however, will result in an unexcused absence.

7. ACADEMIC INELIGIBILITYIf a student is deemed academically ineligible, they are not allowed to participate in any after-school choir events or choral festivals. These students will have the opportunity to make-up full credit through an alternate assignment.

SLHS Choir Practice Journal (Sample)Practice Journals are to be submitted when a student misses a rehearsal for an EXCUSED reason, to make up credit. To receive credit, the student must practice 60 minutes multiplied by the number of classes missed, and submit the completed journal to Mr. Hathikhanavala within one week of the absence. If a student fails to submit a practice journal within one week, their daily participation points for the day(s) in question becomes a grade of zero. Forms are available in the choir room and at www.slhschoirs.com.

Regional/State Honors Choir & Musical Theater Solo and Ensemble FestivalThe MSVMA (Michigan School Vocal Music Association) Honors Choir program consists of three tiers: Regional, State, and All-State. Students in 10th through 12th grade are invited to audition for High School Regional Honors Choir in October. Selected students perform challenging repertoire with other high school students in a December Regional Honors Choir concert. Regional Honors Choir members may also audition for State/All-State Honors Choir, which performs at the Michigan Music Conference in January and the Michigan Youth Arts Festival in May, respectively. More Honors Choir information will be provided during the first week of school. See the choir event calendar for specific dates.

9th grade students are encouraged to participate in the 7th-8th-9th Grade Honors Choir, which begins with an October audition and performance, followed by a performance by selected students at the State Honors Choir concert at the Michigan Music Conference in January. More Honors Choir information will be provided during the first week of school.

Musical Theater Solo & Ensemble Festival provides interested students with an opportunity to prepare two selections from the Musical Theater repertoire for performance in a traditional Solo & Ensemble Festival atmosphere (see description below). More Musical Theater S&E information will be provided during the first week of school.

MSVMA (Michigan School Vocal Music Association) Choral Festival

All of the members in the SLHS Choirs participate in District Choral Festival (See Calendar Dates). If the ensemble receives a rating of Excellent, they also have the opportunity to participate in State Choral Festival (See Calendar Dates). These events are scheduled over multiple weekdays, within the time frame of 8AM-8PM. Each ensemble will participate only on a single day for a given festival. Because of busing limitations, students will likely leave during the school day and may not return until the late afternoon/evening. Potential athletic/work/family conflicts should be identified and addressed immediately by the student, with both the coach/boss/family and Mr. Hathikhanavala. Failure to address

9

Page 10: €¦  · Web viewThe success of our events relies heavily on good communication between the teacher, student, and parent. Please make sure that you are checking the website regularly,

potential conflicts in a timely fashion by the student is grounds for zero participation credit and places future performances in jeopardy.

MSVMA Solo and Ensemble Festival

Solo and Ensemble Festival provides opportunities for interested beginning, intermediate, and advanced singers to individually prepare a musical performance. Musical performances consist of two classical songs selected in consort by you, Mr. Hathikhanavala, the choir accompanist, and a private voice teacher. Students perform two songs for an adjudicator who provides written and oral commentary and an overall performance rating. Students must prepare the repertoire on their own or with a private voice teacher. Practice audio files are available on the choir website. Students must arrange for their own accompanist (assigned by Mr. Hathikhanavala), including payment/rehearsal schedule. District S&E Festival will be held on a Friday and Saturday (See Calendar Dates). Students who receive a rating of Excellent have the opportunity to advance to State S&E Festival, held on a Friday and Saturday (See Calendar Dates).

Private Voice Instruction

While the SLHS Vocal Music program emphasizes musical and vocal growth and development within the choral classroom, we encourage every student to study voice privately. Many students in the varsity ensembles study privately throughout the calendar year. Students will study solo literature, prepare for competitions, and improve their vocal technique. There are several excellent and highly qualified private voice teachers in the South Lyon-Novi-Brighton-Ann Arbor area. A list of suggested private voice teachers is included below:

Karen Roberts in Brighton (810) 227-8426 [email protected] Shuster in South Lyon 810-599-0952 [email protected] Williams in South Lyon (248) 974-8474 [email protected]

Music with a Sacred Text

The SLHS Vocal Music program strives to perform repertoire of the finest quality and from the finest composers. Thus, we explore a wide variety of musical styles, genres, cultures, and time periods. Vocal music involves the fusion of musical compositions with texts, and thus, in our search for excellent repertoire we encounter both sacred and secular texts. It is the intent of the SLHS Vocal Music program to expose students to the wide variety of music that exists, without imposing beliefs upon either individual students or an entire group of students. All music, exhibiting either sacred or secular texts, will be explored and considered from an academic and musical standpoint only, including the examination of text from these perspectives. Because this approach requires students to investigate, not accept or espouse the beliefs of the textual content, all students will be expected to participate fully in this endeavor, regardless of personal beliefs. This statement concurs with material published by the American Choral Directors Association and the Music Educators National Conference.

To maintain a tradition of excellence, we rely on the great parents of our fabulous students. Parents are always invited to participate and get involved, and your contribution directly affects the success of your child. Simply put, we could not offer the type of program we do without the parent contributions! Any parent interested in volunteering is encouraged to attend monthly SING meetings (see meeting schedule under the Booster tab at www.slhschoirs.com) or talk to Mr Hathikhanavala.

SING Vocal Music ScholarshipsEach spring, SING puts on a K-12 SLCS-wide variety show to raise money towards vocal music scholarships for deserving members of the SLHS Choirs. Any member of the SLHS Choirs is able to apply, assuming they meet the eligibility requirements set forth by SING. Scholarship awards can be applied towards private voice lessons, summer music camps, or SLHS Choir materials fees to further the students’ musical growth and development. Scholarship applications are distributed in December. Last year, SING awarded over $1,500 in scholarships. Please contact Mr. Hathikhanavala for more details.

Fundraisers & Student Activity Accounts

Throughout the year, students will have opportunities to attend field trips or perform outside of the school building. Several types of fundraisers are set up so that students can raise money for choir-related activities.

Group Fundraisers: Students participate in a cooperative, group effort. All proceeds go into the general choir fund, to assist in choir-related purchases beyond the SLCS budget. Example: Valentine’s Serenades.SING Fundraisers: Students join parent volunteers to raise money for the SING Booster organization, who receive all proceeds. The SING Boosters use this money for vocal music scholarships and choir-related donations. Example: SING Variety ShowIndividual Fundraisers: Students sell individual items. All proceeds go into individual student accounts. Example: Car wash

Individual student activity accounts are maintained by Ms. Agne. Please see the information below regarding the CHARMS program for managing choir student activity accounts.

Items covered by fundraised money include: SLHS Choir Materials Fee, Solo & Ensemble/Honors Choir registration fees, field trip fees and other choir activities.
