P4 Reading Tasks for James and the Giant Peach

(Chapters 21, 22, 23 & 24)

· Read Chapters 21, 22, 23 and 24 of our class novel, James and the Giant Peach.

· Answer the HOTS questions 1 to 3 and then try and give a personal response to questions 4 and 5.

1. UNDERSTAND: Can you explain why the sharks hadn’t done much damage to the peach?

2. CREATE: What would it be like if you were a passenger on the Queen Mary and you saw the peach with its passengers flying through the sky in Chapter 23?

3. ANALYSE: Roald Dahl seems to pause the story in Chapter 24. Why do you think he does this and what effect does it have on the reader?

4. At the beginning of Chapter 23, James and the creatures all have a marvellous feeling because they are so proud and happy to have worked together as a team to save the peach. The Glow-worm is ‘glowing with pleasure!’

Can you think of a time when you felt like this? Describe an achievement you are really proud of and describe how it made you feel when you managed to succeed. This could be something where you worked with others as part of a team or something you did on your own.

5. The Old-Green-Grasshopper says to James, ‘there are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that you haven’t started wondering about yet.’ (Chapter 24)

What do you wonder about? Write down 5 questions that you would like to know the answer to!

Try to find out the answers to some of your questions.

Haiku Hike

What is Haiku?

Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry that is often used to describe nature or the seasons. Haiku is a three-line poem that follows a specific pattern based on syllables:

Line #1: 5 syllables

Line #2: 7 syllables

Line #3: 5 syllables

Take a Hike!

If you go out for a walk or sit in your garden, take “field notes” throughout the hike. Take notes about what you see, hear, and feel, be as descriptive as possible.

Time to Write.

Once you return from your hike, it is time to turn your field notes into haiku. Write two to three poems based on your experiences and observations. Choose a final haiku to share.

Here is poem from my Haiku Hike this morning.

Wind blowing wildly

Clouds bumping across the sky

Where has the sun gone?
