Summer Challenge Rules- To complete the summer challenge you must complete an activity for each letter all the way from A to Z. I would suggest finding an inexpensive folder to keep all the completed tasks together. When you are completed with your summer challenge tasks you have three options- 1) Turn it into the office for them to put in my mailbox 2) Email it to [email protected] 3) Turn it in the first week of school to Mrs. Yanke Up to two times you may chose to do both activities in a letter to skip a different letter. For example I may complete for the letter A reading an animal book and interview an adult so that I can skip doing the activities for the letter P. This may only be done twice . Summer Challenge Rules-

To complete the summer challenge you must complete an activity for each letter all the way from A to Z. A is for Animals

Read a book that has an animal/animals as a main character/characters. Write down the title, author, and few sentences about the book.

-OR-

A is for Age

Answer the question about age that is in the picture below. Your answer should be about a page.

B is for Biography

Read a biography on a person who interests you. Write down the title, author, and few sentences about the book.

B is for Boring

Rainy days can be boring but here in Zimmerman we welcome the thunder! Write a page about how you tackled being bored on a rainy day.

C is for Colors

Read a book that has a color in the title or the author’s name. Write down the title, author, and a few sentences about the book.Examples- Anne of Green Gable or any book by Holly Black

C is for Cooking

Cook a complete meal for your whole family. It must include a main course, side course, and dessert. Write a paragraph on what you made and how it went. Then ask each member to write down their favorite part of the meal.

D is for Draw

Draw a setting for a fictional story. It can be one you made up or the setting to a fictional story you have read. Make sure to include the name of the fictional setting and if you made it up or what book it is from.

D is for Dreamcatcher

Research what a dreamcatcher is and how they were used. Then create your own dreamcatcher. Write a paragraph of what you learned in your research and then take a picture or bring your dreamcatcher for me to see.

E is for Events

Sometimes it can be easy to not stay current with events happening in areas around us. Write a paragraph each describing a local, state, and world event you read about in the paper this summer that you thought was big news.

-OR-

E is for Empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. We are going to work specifically on cultural empathy. Read a book in which the main character is your gender and around your age but from a different country or culture then you are. Write down the title, author, and few sentences about the book.

F is for Film

Read a book that was turned into a movie. Write down the title, author, and few sentences about the book. Then watch the movie. Describe at least two items you thought they did well and two items you thought they did poorly between the book to movie.

F is for Finish

Finish the story started in this picture. It must be at least a page.

G is for Games

Play a board game or card game that involves strategy. If you lose explain, in a paragraph, what went wrong with your strategy and how you could have improved it. If you win explain your strategy you used to win the game.

-OR-

G is for Gemstone.

Research Minnesota’s official gemstone. What is it called? When was it designated? What does it look like? Where is it found?

H is for Hearts

Hearts, Rummy, and Cribbage are examples of some fun card games. Ask a parent, grandparent or other adult to teach you how to play a card game. Write about the game. Was it easy? Did you have fun? How did your adult learn how to play the game and do that have any funny stories related to the game?

H is for Holiday

Create your own holiday. Pick a date; write a paragraph describing the importance of your holiday. Create a few traditions, a logo, and festivities.

I is for Interview

Interview an adult. Ask an adult what it was like being a kid. Example questions may be- What did you like to do in the summer? Who did you hang out with as a kid? Best vacation?

-OR-

I is for Interests

Hang out with an adult or a friend and have them show you one of their interests that you have not tried or may not know a lot about. So for example maybe they are interested in sports, card games, anime, comic books, etc... Spend some time trying them out. Write a page about what it was, what you learned, what you liked, didn't like, and if you will ever do it again.

J is for Jogging.

Go out and get at least 15 minutes of exercise in the sun. Tell about your favorite kind of exercise and why you like to do it. You must get a parent or guardian signature saying you completed at least 15 minutes of exercise.

-OR-

J is for June and July

June and July means SUMMER! Complete a mostly only summer activity. So for example go on a picnic, swimming outside, bike riding, etc… Write down your activity and answer these three questions- How was the activity? Did anything exciting happen? And what would this activity be like in January or February?

K is for Kite

Try to make your own kite to fly. Write a page explaining what worked and what didn’t. If possible also include a picture of your kite.

K is for Kleenex

A Kleenex is actually just a brand name for a tissue. The word Kleenex is a trademark that has become so popular that people tend to use it more often than the actual word tissue. Find at least 10 other trademarks that have become just as popular that they have practically replaced that actual word. Write them down and write down the real word for the object.

L is for Love

Read a book that has a love triangle in it. Write down the title, author, and few sentences about the book

L is for Listening

Try to listen instead of talking for a day and see what you all hear. Write a paragraph on how it goes. (Make sure to let people know ahead of time that you are working on this project)

M is for Minnesota

Read a book by a Minnesota author. Write down the title, author, and few sentences about the book. Here is a website of Minnesota authors http://www.sppl.org/books/read-local/minnesota-childrens-authors-and-illustratorsor ask a librarian.

M is for Money

You have been given $100 to plan out the perfect day. Write out a budget of how you would spend the money and what you would do. (Make sure to include travel expenses, food etc…)

N is for New

Read a first book from a new author. Write down the title, author, and few sentences about the book.

O is for One

Read a book with a One word title. Write down the title, author, and few sentences about the book.

O is for Organizations

There are many organizations that someone can volunteer at to help others. Take time to find one of these organizations and set up at least an hour of volunteer time with them. If you cannot find or get to an organization do your own volunteer work in your community. Examples would be help a neighbor mow, walk their dog, or pick up garbage along the street. Write a paragraph about your volunteer work and get a parent, guardian, volunteer coordinator, or neighbor’s signature.

P is for Peer

Read a book that has been suggested by a peer. Write down the title, author, and few sentences about the book.

-OR-

P is for Poetry

Find a poem that you really connect with or enjoy. Then either draw a picture or write a paragraph telling/showing how this poem makes you feel or what it makes you think about.

Q is for Quiet time.

Go sit outside and quietly listen for at least 15 minutes. Write a story about what you heard.

Q is for Question

What is a question you have always had but never took the time to look up the answer. Write down the question. Then use a computer or book to research the answer. Write a page stating what you found out about your question. You must also show at least one source that you used. So for example cite a book like this-Author. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publishing Company, Year Printed.

R is for Road Trip

Road Trips are lots of fun but the car ride can become very long if you don’t make stops on the way! Plan where you would drive to and find 3 to 4 attractions you would stop at on the way. Look at a map and research on the internet or at the library

R is for Recipe.

Find a delicious recipe and make it. Write how it turned out and if you would use the recipe again. Next, write down or copy and paste the recipe. Next change the measurements so someone could make a half recipe. Finally, change the measurements for someone who wanted to double the recipe.

S is for Songs

You probably like many songs but do you actually know all the lyrics to these songs. Time to read song lyrics! Find 2 songs that have really fun and meaningful lyrics to you and print or write them out. Write a paragraph explaining what you like about these lyrics.

S is for Sports

Create a play by play of at least 5 minutes of a sports game as if you were the sports announcer you are watching in person or on television. Either record yourself or type it out.

T is for Tree

Work on creating your family tree. Go back as far as you can. Make sure to research and use all the sources you can. Ask your parents, grandparents, and relatives. Also with parents permission you may want to check out online sources like ancestry.com which usually costs money but does offer a free 14 day trial.

T is for Theater

Have you ever been to the theater and seen a play? Or maybe you’ve read a play? Create your own play for the theater. You can either write it up (minimum or 3 pages) or you may find people to act it out and submit a recording of your play (minimum length of 3 minutes)

U is for Urban Legends

Research Urban legends. What are they and how do they usually start? Create your own. Must be at least a page.

U is for Unkept

An unkept house can really stress some people out and keep them indoors so lets help with housework! Help with extra housework around the house for one day. You must have a parent’s signature verifying that you helped out.

V is for Vocabulary

Write down five new words you learned this summer. The definition and then use them in a sentence.

V is for Video Games

Video Games (or computer games) teach us in there own way. Play a Video Game for at least an hour. Write the title of the game and then discuss in at least a page how the game made you think or was educational. For example, did you have to make important decisions, use creativity, or be strategic? How could this game have been more educational if it was lacking?

W is for Week

W is for Weeds

Weeds are a gardener's enemy. Try your hand at being a gardener. Plant something and try to help it grow. Take care of it. Take a few pictures of the process and the results. Let me know in a small paragraph the how the experience went.

X is for IXL.

Complete one IXL activity to a SMART score of 80.

-OR-

X is for xx and xy chromosomes

Read a book that has a strong female or male character and write a small paragraph explaining why you found them to be strong characters.

Y is for You

Create a collage all about you. You can show favorites, interests, hobbies, use real photos, etc… be creative. If you don’t want to turn this in you must at least take a picture for me to see the finished project.

-OR-

Y is for Yourself

Yourself is the Y in DIY or Do it Yourself. Use the free social networking site Pinterest (www.pinterest.com) to find a craft project or a do it yourself project. Try it out. Discuss in a paragraph how the project went and take a picture.

Z is for Zimmerman

Create a map of the city of Zimmerman or your neighborhood.
