Grammar: Idioms

Idioms are common phrases used in conversation that have a different meaning from that which appears at first sight.   These phrases or sayings don’t always make sense literally but we can still understand what they mean!

Example: I hit the nail on the head means I got something exactly right.  

‘To let the cat out of the bag’: This idiom is not about letting a cat escape from a bag! It’s actually about revealing a secret that should have remained a secret.

A decimal is a fraction of a unit. Decimals are really decimal fractions because they are parts of a unit.

e.g.

0.1 means no units and of a unit.

0.07 means 0 units + of a unit

Take three sheets of paper (not card) and turn each piece into a 3D shape like in the picture below,

Stand each shape upright and balance as many books as you can on each structure.

Which shape is the strongest? Why do you think that it?

Study this picture very closely. You will need to know all these notes to help you complete the worksheets below. We have met some of these notes before in violin and some of them are new.

As the worksheets go on, they get a little trickier.

You must read the instructions carefully as each worksheet is a little different.

If possible, please use a pencil so you can make changes of you make a mistake!!

Be aware that you have to complete 2 tasks on each sheet, 1. Fill in the note. 2. Write in the note NAME also.

Could you make up your own words for these note patterns below?The upper stave is all the notes of the treble clef and the lower stave is for the notes on the bass clef.

Ongoing work:

Continue working on a project or start a new project on a topic/topics that interests you. You can add a page each day. It could be about your favourite book, person, film, hobby, football team, Disney character or a country. You could draw, paint cut out pictures to add into your book each day and you can present your masterpiece when school starts back.

If you are doing any other fun activities at home with you family such as baking, arts and crafts, experiments or exercise activities, take pictures or write about them and tell us all about them when we are back at school.

Remember to be good for your parent’s girls and to help out at home whenever you can.
