1st Grade Reading/Writing For writing, we will continue to work on writing key details of the texts we read, writing paragraphs that include a clear main topic sentence, details, and closing sentence, and revising our writing. For comprehension, we will continue to ask and answer questions about texts, make and confirm predictions within a text, and identify the characters, settings and events. We will use evidence from the text and photographs so that we can support our writing with details. For reading, we will continue practice on or reading fluency skills, high-frequency words, and blending the sounds in words with short vowel sounds. Math In Math, we finished up working with addition and subtraction word problems, strategies, and fluency within 10. In October, we are going to begin working with place value as the students are introduced to addition and subtraction problems within 20. The students will be introduced to multiple strategies to solve these problems. Science In Science, we finished up working with solids and liquids are diving into Earth’s materials. Students will learn how to identify properties of different Earth substances, compare, and classify the different Earthen materials. Students will October Mondays are early release days. School gets out at 2:05 Oct. 18 th early release at 12:30 for conferences No school on Oct. 19 th Reading logs are always due Mondays Please look through your child’s Homework Folder to Students will be bringing home homework . What you can expect most of the time: -20 minutes of reading a night and 1 question about what they read. -5-10 minutes of a Math worksheet every night. If you have questions, please let us know. Reading/Writing

For writing, we will continue to work on writing key details of the texts we read, writing paragraphs that include a clear main topic sentence, details, and closing sentence, and revising our writing.

Students will also investigate the impact of using the Earth’s resources responsibly. Social StudiesIn Social Studies, we are going to be combining the Social Studies curriculum with Reading and Writing in order to gain more time to focus on Reading and Writing. The topic we will be working on this month in Social Studies is different cultures and communities.
