Please Note: The schedule is subject to change. The schedule is created based upon weather and the progress of sailors. If sailors are struggling with mastering certain maneuvers, the schedule will be modified to ensure that skills are achieved before moving onto the next task. Sailing is an extremely complex sport to master, and it’s important that students feel comfortable in their own skills and within the boat. It is also important that sailors learn to respect and appreciate the power of the environment in which they sail. Wind, waves, and current are some of the aspects that make sailing so exhilarating, but they can be factors that can make sailing quite frightening for the inexperienced sailor. Maintaining a fun and safe learning environment is our main priority, and as such, when wind speeds exceed 20 knots the Opti Race Program will not be going out on the water. If there is excessive rain, we will also not be going out on the water. On these days, we will play sailing related games as well learning sailing land-lessons, such as what to wear when sailing, rules of the road, and reading the wind.

Please review the Waegwoltic Parental Guide for more specific information on the program, and please follow our webpage at http://waegsailing.weebly.com for daily updates.

Parental Commitment: Parental support is paramount when participating in the racing stream of the Waeg’s sailing program. Throughout the course of the Opti Race Program, sailors are often off site, training and racing at BBYC, SMSC, LYC etc. Parents are responsible for the transportation of their sailor(s) to all such events and are responsible for the registration for their sailor(s) as well. The Waegwoltic’s instructors and coaches will help educate on, support, and facilitate the racing process; however, please ensure that you as a parent are prepared for the level of commitment that is required to have your sailor participate in this program. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sarah Flanagan, the Head Instructor, at [email protected] .
