What’s your story about? ELA, Figurative Language. Addresses L.S.5, demonstrating knowledge of figurative language, word relations and word meanings.

How does your story start? We began by modeling, showing samples of each in text and explaining why I would use it in the first place. Then students were guided as they work on one text as a class with similes and metaphors as a close reading. Finally students practiced individually, we handed out passages and students had to identify similes and metaphors with an explanation. (I do, we do, you do)

What happened? Some students will be successful and others won’t due to low reading levels and language issues. Revisit during intervention and small group.

What changed? Will plan to teach one skill at a time (similes or metaphors). Exposure of skill across genres. Finding it is hard for students to separate out strategies, so isolating the skills should help.
