Grand Designs Revisited: BelfastSunday,18 September 2011

Thomas and Dervla O'Hare set out to build a spectacular split-level home cascading down a practically vertical hillside in Belfast. No one in their right mind would have built on such a steep slope but ambitious young architect Thomas believed he could do anything as long as he put his mind to it.

Thomas set up a fast track building program to complete this enormous, contemporary home in record time with Dervla - who had never built anything before - project managing the whole circus.

As the building reached its final stages, Thomas and Dervla had the opportunity to buy an adjoining garden which could radically change future plans for the house. Now, with all the deals done and new work complete, Kevin goes back to see the reshaped house to find out how life has changed in this, one of the biggest Grand Designs of them all!

Mrs Carey's ConcertSunday,18 September 2011

At a girls’ high school, music director Karen Carey prepares her young students for a concert at the Opera House. Believing in the transformative power of great music, Carey insists upon a classical repertoire, sets a dauntingly high performance standard and requires the participation of every girl in the school. Mrs Carey inspires many of her girls, but some do not share her passion and are not afraid to say so.

Her greatest challenge will be firing up the unwilling, and her antagonist is 16-year-old-Iris. Waging open warfare against authority, the charismatic Iris is the focal point of student resistance to Carey's Opera House ambitions, and the only girl who gets seriously under her skin.

Emily is Carey's star musician and a different sort of headache - a gifted but troubled teenager on the threshold of a brilliant musical career if only…

Mrs Carey wants Emily to solo in a Bruch violin concerto, but to bring out her best, she needs to keep the girl from going off the rails, and then get inside her head. This proves no easy task, because young Emily has her own distinctive take on everything.

Mrs Carey's Concert is about music making and coming of age, about talent and courage, compliance and rebellion. About those prepared to open their minds and hearts to what the world has to offer… and those yet to discover the potential within.

Compass: My Brother The IslamistSunday,18 September 2011

Tree surgeon and filmmaker Robb Leech is an ordinary white middle-class boy from the Dorset seaside town of Weymouth. So too is his stepbrother Rich. But a little over a year ago, Rich became a radical Islamist who now goes by the name of Salahuddin. He associates with jihadist fundamentalists and believes the UK should be ruled by Sharia law.

Compass: My Brother The Islamist charts the brothers' relationship - and Robb's attempt to understand why the person he'd once looked up to as a teenage role model could so strongly reject all that his family and the Western world, believe in.

As Robb spends time with Salahuddin, he witnesses a very particular phenomenon: the embrace of radical Islamism by young men, many of them white. This observational documentary has unprecedented access to a group who are regularly demonised elsewhere.

Robb first heard of Rich's conversion in a national newspaper, in the summer of 2009. The article said Rich had converted under Anjem Choudary, leader of the radical Muslim group, Islam4UK (later banned under Britain's anti-terror laws).

Robb was horrified by the things his stepbrother was telling him: that under Sharia law, women should be stoned to death for committing adultery, that he was prepared to die for Islam and that as a non-believer, Robb was going to Hell. Just the previous summer the two brothers had shared a room on holiday in Cyprus and been practically inseparable.

Robb began filming what was happening to Rich - and the wider emotional impact on their family.

Fake Or Fortune?: RembrandtTuesday,20 September 2011 Final

UK Journalist Fiona Bruce teams up with art expert Philip Mould to investigate mysteries behind paintings. It's a world of subterfuge and intrigue as they grapple with complex battles often unseen beneath the apparently genteel art establishment.

In this closing episode, suspicions are aroused when Philip and his researcher spot a rogue picture for sale in a South African auction house. It exudes all the classic scents of being a 'sleeper', an important picture that has been miscatalogued and offered for a very low price.

But there is a darker side revealed when investigations uncover that this is a wanted painting, having been stolen by the Nazis in World War II. Records show it was once recorded as being a German national treasure, once thought to have been painted by Rembrandt. A Jewish family have been trying to track it and other works stolen from their gallery ever since.

With minutes to go Philip and Fiona manage to stop the sale and release the picture for investigation. Having picked it up from Cape Town, Fiona delivers it to Philip and an in-depth examination utilising the latest infra-red and forensic testing begins. Can it really be by Rembrandt and will it be possible to see it returned to its rightful owners?

This week's episode is a quite interesting look at 'House and Home'. Joining QI Master Stephen Fry ‘in da house’ are panellists Danny Baker, Eddie Izzard, Bill Bailey and Alan Davies.

The panellists’ buzzers sound like door bells. Stephen Fry asks - many things can influence the value of a house, but what instantly reduces the value of a house in America by a third?

Artscape: 3 Days in Venice: Biennale 2011Tuesday,20 September 2011

For more than a century, the Venice Biennale has been one of the world’s largest and most prestigious arts events. Artscape enters the society of glamorous international art, celebrity parties and competitive national exhibitions. This is an investigation into the Biennale’s significance in the context of the international art world and Australia’s part in that.

3 Days in Venice focuses on the preview or ‘vernissage’ when 30,000 arts insiders - artists, dealers, collectors - not to mention the rich and famous - flock to more than 89 national exhibitions throughout the city.

In particular, this documentary follows the progress of Australia’s 2011 official representative, Hany Armanious. Armanious is preceded by the likes of Sidney Nolan and Albert Tucker, Howard Arkley, Bill Henson and more recently Shaun Gladwell whose careers have all been given a boost as a result of international exposure and recognition received at the Venice Biennale.

Controversially, this year the real action is rumoured to be around billionaire, Francois Pinault, who, almost in competition to the official program, will be exhibiting an adventurous collection at the elegant Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana.

Among others 3 Days In Venice features British arts journalist Ben Lewis, director of The Great Contemporary Art Bubble - a blistering piece of investigative journalism about the art world, and Australian actress and art enthusiast Rachel Griffiths.

The Venice Biennale is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious arts events. This is a focus on glamorous international art, celebrity parties, competitive national exhibitions and behind-the-scenes nerves.

Poh's Kitchen on the roadWednesday,21 September 2011

Poh's on the road to the Australian alps. Recently Poh has been using beer as an ingredient instead of wine to give an extra bit of sweetness and complexity to a dish. So she's off to the alps to visit a charming little boutique brewery near Bright.

Keen to find out more she talks to some local brewers and meets local chef Anthony Simone, a chef who is fascinated with beer and cooking. Anthony also represents the other thread that drew Poh to the Aussie alps and that's the local Italian community. Italians here still keep up fantastic traditions like salumi (Italian smallgoods making). Originally from Umbria, Anthony's family run a local restaurant which combines the best of Italian tradition with a love of the region and its bounty. As well as talking beer and cooking, Anthony teaches Poh the finer points of making salami and pancetta.

Poh's last alpine adventure is to go on a wild mushroom hunt. She's been invited to lunch with the Simone family and wants to take something. She decides to use the local wild mushrooms to create a mushroom spring roll. The spring rolls go down a treat at lunch and there's even time for Poh to take a toboggan ride in the freshly fallen snow.

CrowniesThursday,22 September 2011

While Janet (Marta Dusseldorp) and Lina (Andrea Demetriades) wrestle with a potential child sociopath, Richard (Hamish Michael) crosses the line with a key witness. And Tatum (Indiana Evans) discovers that running her own case is far from a drag.

The Max Gardiner case is turned on its head after Max's father Sean (David Flanklin) brings the DPP some alarming new evidence about his son's abnormal behaviour. Sean's account of Max's disturbing history convinces Lina of the boy's guilt. However, Janet maintains her reservations, and recommends against prosecuting. But David (Lewis Fitz-Gerald), who has his own ideas, forces Janet to pursue Max in court.

Richard is surprised when Tina Chang (Tasneem Roc) discharges herself from hospital, intent on giving evidence to shut her boss's killer away for good. But the prospect of giving detailed evidence of her ordeal in court proves too much. Tatum is handed her own contest to run - a face-off between two drag queens. Tatum wins the case for her complainant, but when she's invited to see the drag queen's show firsthand, she discovers she's been used for an entirely different purpose.

Tension between Lina and Erin (Ella Scott Lynch) lingers after Lina's questioning about Rhys (Jerome Ehlers). But they thaw when Erin helps Lina dissect the Gardiner case.

The Next Big ThingThursday,22 September 2011

This week the fledgling suppliers face the harsh realities of the cut throat world of retail. The open days are over but the hard work is only just beginning. The retailers may like the producers' ideas, but a series of tricky price negotiations and design meetings mean that not all products will pass their prototype stage. Business inexperience is beginning to show through as blunders are made and professional advice ignored.

At Habitat Steven Biddulph continues down his determined road of UK manufacture, while Catherine Gray's attempt to design a vase with a difference is hitting a wobbly patch. The Liberty designers' dreams continue as Professor Weston talks money, whilst Charlotte Sale is in a race against time to produce her entire order in one day - or risk making a loss.

At Boots, Elaine Weston's teen skin care range faces the toughest test of all - a focus group of young girls, who she hopes will want to splash the cash on her creams. By the end of the episode, one product will have hit the shelves and one will be back to where it began before the open day. And of course Theo Paphitis is on hand to find out exactly what the designers, producers and retailers are thinking - every step of the way.

Scott and BaileyFriday,23 September 2011 New Series

A thrilling investigative drama exploring the personal and professional lives of two female detectives. Detective Constable Rachel Bailey (Suranne Jones) is 30, down-to-earth, noisy, argumentative and single. She's a hardworking, committed detective. She had been in a relationship with a barrister, Nick (Rupert Graves), until he left her for the wife she didn't know he had.

Meanwhile her colleague, Detective Constable Janet Scott (Lesley Sharp) is 40, a diplomat and a thinker, as well as being a wife and mother to two teenage girls. She had very strong reasons for wanting to be a detective - her friend was murdered when they were children and the crime has never been solved.

They both work for Manchester Metropolitan Police's prestigious Murder Investigation Team and, despite the obvious differences between them, they have developed a robust friendship.

Co-created by award-winning writer Sally Wainwright and ex-Detective Inspector Diane Taylor, formerly of the Major Incident Team at Greater Manchester Police, Scott And Bailey is an honest, powerful and funny crime drama series.

In this opening episode, angry at being dumped by married lover Nick, Manchester detective Rachel Bailey joins married colleague Janet Scott to investigate the murder, made to resemble a suicide, of Emel Yilmatz, a pregnant teen age Turkish girl. And Janet is approached by old friend Geoff to reopen a dead case.

As Anna (Susan Lynch) starts a new life, Monroe is determined to show that he can move on too, but his attempts to enter the world of dating seem doomed to failure.

At the hospital, Monroe is sure that surgery can help Brendan (Tony Mooney), a family man whose epileptic seizures have been getting worse. Catalyst3D Printing

Imagine the industrial revolution in reverse, where it's as cheap to create single items as it is to mass produce them. 3D printers have shrunk in size and cost over the past decade, enabling small design teams to sidestep the mass manufacturing process to make unique creations. Jonica Newby travels to the U.K. to sample a flashy commercial 3D printer and the ultimate DIY workshop. Whether top of the range or in the backyard shed, 3D printers may have as profound an impact on the commercial world as the factory conveyor belt.

Wind and Waves

A new study of satellite data covering a twenty-year period - the most comprehensive research of its kind ever undertaken - suggests that wind speeds have increased by 10% and wave heights have grown by nearly 7%, in extreme weather conditions. The research could inform the design of coastal buildings, structures and shipping. But as Tanya Ha reports, this could also adversely affect the cycle of heat exchange between the sea and the atmosphere.

Gravity

Derek Muller takes to the streets with a medicine ball and a basketball and poses the question: when dropped from the same height, which one will hit the ground first? You may know the correct answer, but can you explain why? This bouncy segment has Derek playfully intriguing his hapless subjects before delivering the goods and putting them out of their bemused puzzlement.

Recovered Memories

Unfortunately, our memory is not like a video recorder and limited understanding of exactly how memory works has given rise to disagreements. None of these disagreements has been more vigorous than the battle over recovered memories. Buried memories of traumatic events can be recovered - but how reliable are they? Are traumatic memories repressed through a process of dissociation? Or, do we simply forget? Jonica Newby explores the latest in thinking on recovered memories.

Penguin Wave

Being the only vertebrate to breed during the harsh Antarctic winter, Emperor penguins have found a clever way to survive - by huddling. But, just as important as the huddle, is the wave - the cooperative, coordinated pattern of movements that keeps every penguin on its happy little feet and safe from the cold.
