MATHS:*Improve your Multiplication Tables with https://arithmetic.zetamac.com/game?key=7550253f(Write the page number at the top & always number your questions) *Improve your Mental Maths with the next two Tests from Brainteasers*PLANET MATHS ACTIVITIES -If you remember back to last week, we were learning how to add hours and minutes. We discovered that it was very tricky because it is not like regular addition. Adding time is not like adding Hundreds Tens & Units because there are not 100 mins in an hour! We make sure to keep add the hours and mins separately like this hrs mins 5 57

+ 2 44 7 101 Then we say 7 hrs + 101 mins is the same as 8 hrs + 41 mins

Rule 1: Always add hours and mins separately.

Page 5: bgnsblog.files.wordpress.com · Web viewPage 146 Here are some word problems about time. Make sure to send us a message if you find any tricky questions. Day 4: Page 147 Check Up

Rule 2: Change the answer at the end. So if you have more than 60 mins you can add that as an extra hour. Day 1 : Adding Time Try working out this problem :Mam was very busy this week. She spent 4 45 mins painting the kitchen and 7 hrs 40 mins weeding the garden, how long did she spend working altogether?

When you write out the sum, make sure to leave a gap between the hrs and the mins.

Next we need to learn how to subtract one amount of time from another. This is also tricky because there are only 60 mins in an hour not 100 mins.Rule 1: When we subtract time we must always keep the hours and mins separate.Rule 2: If there are 60 or more mins in the answer, we must change the answer so that the 60 mins make an extra hour and there will be fewer mins in the final answer. Here is an example of how it works:hrs mins 3 54- 1 28 2 26 I can regroup the mins to get 26 as my answer.

Page 6: bgnsblog.files.wordpress.com · Web viewPage 146 Here are some word problems about time. Make sure to send us a message if you find any tricky questions. Day 4: Page 147 Check Up

I won’t need to alter the hours because I only have 26 mins.

In this next example, we will have a problem subtracting the mins. Can you spot the problem? hrs mins 9 13- 5 39

Well done if you noticed that we can’t subtract 39 mins from 13 mins. Don’t panic! We can rewrite the sum by taking one hour and adding it onto the mins side. Here is the old sum Here is the new sum ↓ ↓

hrs mins hrs mins

9 13 8 73- 5 39 - 5 39

Notice how the new sum has one less hour but 60 extra mins.I only changed the top row of the sum, nothing changed on the lower rowNow I will be able to subtract. It’s ok to regroup within the mins but I must not try to regroup from the hours. Now try to

work out the correct answer on your own. Check on the next page to see if you were correct.

(Answer to subtraction of time question: 3 hrs 39 mins)

S.P.H.E : Topic: Making Decisions• Decision making is influenced by a wide range of factors. Increasing our awareness of these factors helps us to make informed decisions. An informed decision means that you have thought carefully about all the options and the consequences before you made up your

mind. “That’s why I did it!”

Think of a time when you made decisions to suit the following headlines. Draw a picture to go with each one.- Because I just felt like it- Because everyone was doing it- Because I saw it on T.V.- Because it’s my favourite- Because my teacher told me to- Because I would be in trouble if I didn’t- Because my mum or dad told me to- Because I think it is wonderful- Because I think it is important- Because everyone has to

Page 21: bgnsblog.files.wordpress.com · Web viewPage 146 Here are some word problems about time. Make sure to send us a message if you find any tricky questions. Day 4: Page 147 Check Up

- Because there was nothing else

Now have a look at the following statements.Think about the people who influence your decision.

There are mainly 3 to think about:1. Decisions I make by myself2. Decisions we make together3. Decisions that are made for me - I don’t choose.

Write 1) 2 ) or 3 ) beside each statement depending on who makes the decision• What clothes will I wear?• What time will I go to bed?• Who are my friends?• What homework will I do?• When will I go to school?• How will I spend my money?• Where will I go on holidays?• What books will I read?• Who will I talk to in school?• What will I watch on tv?• What will I eat?• What are my hobbies?• Whose house will I visit?• What will I do at the weekend?• What movies will I go to?• Where will I play?

Page 22: bgnsblog.files.wordpress.com · Web viewPage 146 Here are some word problems about time. Make sure to send us a message if you find any tricky questions. Day 4: Page 147 Check Up

What do you notice from your answers?
