David G. James. 1989. Overwintering of Amblyseius victoriensis Womersley (Acarina: Phytoseiidae) in southern South Wales. General and Applied Entomology 21: 51-55.

Keywords: predatory mite, The overwintering behaviour of 'Amblyseius victoriensis' (Womersley) was studied in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area of southern New South Wales in 1986 and 1987. 'A. victoriensis' overwintered successfully as non-reproductive, but active feeding females on evergreen vegetation or weeds. Successful overwintering was associated with the presence of tydeid or tenuipalpid mites which appeared to serve as a major food source. Overwintering was unsuccessful on weeds when 'Tetranychus urticae' (Koch) was the only prey available. Reproductive dormancy in female 'A. victoriensis' was terminated rapidly at any time during winter when exposed to warm temperature and long photophase. Winter females deprived of food died within 21 days.
