Weekly Service Roster

If you swap a duty with someone else – reading, chalice bearer, prayers etc, as well as changing it on the roster by the door please would you let the Liturgist for that Sunday know as they may not check the alterations during the week. This will make it much easier for them when putting the service together. Many thanks.

Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.

GILLIAN’S MONTHLY MUSINGS

There are always worship highlights for me, but our first ever effort to take our Blessing of the Animals Service out to the Mercury Bay Community, by holding it along the Buffalo Beach foreshore, would have to be my pick this month. We worshipped with dogs and their Career’s this time, but as the experience was so worthwhile for all of us, we will try for some less familiar animals as well as dogs next year. This was an outreach that was really appreciated by those who attended. The affectionate ‘dog hug’ I received from a German Shepherd after I had blessed him, of a paw wrapped around my leg, would probably have to bemy hit of the morning.

It is easy for us to stay within the comfort zone of worshipping exactly the same way in exactly the same place every time we come together, but sometimes a change of place and space bring the reality of Christ’s closeness to all of us, more clearly into focus. This was a good thing to do.Unfortunately, a much less happy occasion was the trip Nicky Hewlett and I took to George Langton’s funeral at Holy Trinity Cathedral. George has been a much loved member of our congregation for years, and his impish presence at our services will be sadly missed. We are coming towards the end of our church year, and our Worship Team have been very busy thinking about and planning our Advent and Christmas worship. Along with the Advent theme to be highlighted in each of those four weeks we have agreed as a worship community to run an Advent study programme, one evening a week during Advent, together with a shared meal. Hospitality, fellowship, thinking and talking about this important time in our faith journeys, are things we do well. I look forward to being part of this programme.ManaakiGillian

For the next few editions of the NN we will be sharing, section by section, the contents of the guideline booklet:Helping the People of God Celebrate.(Notes on the Liturgies of the Eucharist – The Eucharist as a Community Event)

Last month the NN looked at the third option for the Eucharistic Liturgy, to which we commonly refer by their starting page numbers. (It is important to remember that much of the text in these Liturgies is optional, with the expectation that the Liturgist and Presiding priest will use those components that are most useful and pertinent for a particular service).

This month, the first part of the Liturgy known as Thanksgiving and Praise starting on p476, is explained. The Ministry of the Word in this Eucharist is the time and place for us to speak about and witness to our love for God. It is also an occasion where our being a nation of at least two races and languages is openly acknowledged.Thanksgiving and Praise opens with a welcome in which the people are addressed by their Maori titles, and the themes prepared are designed to speak to Maori and Pakeha alike. However, the parallel columns are not, and are not meant to be, translations of each other. The people are welcomed as the baptisedwho are Christ’s body and Christ’s work in the world. They reply by p[raising Christ the new beginning who gives the gospel.A song of praise follows and anything suitable may be used. The text thanks God for our country and our life together. It may be followed or varied by another piece which reflects on Christ and the work we have to do. It is the leader’s part to speak theologically; the people answer personally. The reflection then moves to our failure to be true members of Christ’s body, and to receiving and proclaiming forgiveness. The welcome, the song of praise and the reconciliation are designed to open the liturgy together and to move naturally into each other. However, if people want an extended time of singing or praise, this is the obvious place to have it.Next come the sentence, readings and sermon. The second section ends with what is called a liturgical affirmation. It is not meant to be a creed. Rather, it is a devotional declaration of faith in the Trinity, in response to the good news.(Next month we will continue with the remainder of this liturgy.)

Anglican Service at Continuing Care Unit

On the 3rd Wednesday of every month, the Anglican Churchis rostered to take a short service at CCU. (The other churches

inWhitianga take services on the other Wednesdays). The format for the service is quite simple – a bible reading, someprayers and maybe a psalm interspersed with six hymns. You canuse your own discretion as to the input, usually based around the

seasons or any special event in the Church calendar.I have been taking this service for quite some time but would really

like one or two others to share the responsibility. If you feel you would be willing to help in this worthwhileoutreach, please contact me and we can discuss it further.

Nicky Hewlett – Ph. 8665115 or 0273830052

FOOD BASKET: - Don’t forget your donation to the Social Services Food Basket. This is a very worthy cause, and there are people in Whitianga who are really struggling. It is good for us to

share a little of what we have, to give some comfort to these households.

LIBRARY

Pilgrim's Progress (C S Lewis) I read this 30/40 years ago and didn't realize it was a sort-of autobiography written around the time of his conversion from atheism. In his pilgrimage he passes through the City of Claptrap, (bet you've been there) Tablelands of the High Anglicans, (and there) the swamps of the Dirty Twenties (only just heard about it?) and more ...

History of Christianity (The) Great Illustrations and easy to read. Full of characters, such as the lovable Roman emperors Nero and Caligula, a rugby team called The Crusaders, saints and un-saints.

BaluBulongMipela Ideal inflight reading when landing in Wellington on stormy days - and on overseas flights during cyclones and volcanic eruptions. This odd-titled book is about MAF but not the now deceased MPI one. Ministry Aviation Fellowship gave us a presentation a while ago and if you like gripping flying to-and-from unsealed jungle and mountain runways this is for you. . Book now ... Robin

PRAYERS AND THOUGHTS

A PRAYER FOR THOSE LIVING ALONEI live alone, dear Lord,

Stay by my side,

In all my daily needs

Be thou my guide.

Grant me good health,

For that indeed, I pray,

To carry on my work

From day to day.

Keep pure my mind,

My thoughts, my every deed,

Let me be kind, unselfish

In my neighbour’s need,

Spare me from fire, from flood

Malicious tongues,

From thieves, from fear,

And evil ones.

If sickness or an accident befall

Then humbly, Lord, I pray,

Hear, thou my call,

And when I’m feeling low,

Or in despair,

Lift up my heart

And help me in my prayer.

I live alone, dear Lord yet have no fear,

Because I feel your presence ever near.
