DC Gurdwara 2016, January – April Highlights

January : Youth Program - Gurpurab of Chaar Sahibzaade, Mata Gujri Ji, Mai Bhago Ji and sacrifices of all Singhs in the Poh of 1704.

The youth program was held on January 30th and included 60 participants from the DC Gurdwara as well as those in Maryland and Virginia. The entire Deewan was conducted by the youth and included Shabads, speeches, poems and group presentations. The program also featured the Mata Gujri Inspiring Grandparent Award Ceremony.

Feb: In Feb, we remembered our martyrs in massacre happened in Nankana Sahib.

The Nankana massacre (or Saka Nankana) took place in Nankana Sahib at that time of British India, modern-day Pakistan. The event forms an important part of Sikh history. In political significance, it comes next only to Jallianwala Bagh massacre of April 1919. The saga constitutes the core of the Gurdwara Reform Movement started by the Sikhs in early twentieth century. The interesting part of this saga is the unprecedented discipline, self-control and exemplary patience displayed by the peaceful Sikh protesters even in the face of extreme barbarism.

March: In March the Gurdwara was fortunate to have two special guests performing kirtan for the Sangat. On March 7th Satpartap Singh Ji performed kirtan in pure classical raag and on March 27 Bhai Harjeet Singh Ji performed kirtan.

April: On April 14 a special Diwan was held at the Gurdwara to celebrate Baisakhi and the foundation of the Khalsa Panth. Akhand Paath started on April 15 and ended on April 17. Baisakhi marks the establishment of the Khalsa and it is also a Punjabi harvest festival. The day is observed as a thanksgiving day by farmers. The Sangat was represented at the April 23 Baisakhi celebration hosted by Ambassador Arun K. Singh and Dr. Maina Chawla Singh at their residence. The well attended program included a speech by Dr. Pavan Sawhney on the meaning of Baisakhi as well as an entertaining gidda group and bhangra.
