Name: _______________________ Grade: _________ Milling Machine Cutters
A component that is to be machined on the horizontal milling machine from a mild steel block 110 x 30 x 40 mm is shown in Figure 5.
a) Sketch and name the cutter used to produce the slot at A.
b) Sketch and name the cutter used to produce the slot at B.
c) Sketch and name the cutter used to produce the slot at C.
d) The slot at B is to be machined using a 120 mm diameter milling cutter. The
cutting speed of mild steel is 30 metres per minute.
i. State the formula for calculating the revolutions per minute of the
cutter.
ii. Calculate the revolutions per minute required.
e) List TWO advantages and TWO disadvantages of the conventional (up-cut)
method of milling.
f) State TWO safety precautions that should be observed when using the
milling machine.
1 The figure below, shows a component with a T- slot which is to be produced
on the milling machine
a) Sketch and name the TWO cutting tools that could be used to produce the
slot.
b) List FOUR factors that could NEGATIVELY affect the life of a cutting tool.
c) State the primary purpose of the dividing head that is used in gear-cutting
operations on the milling machine?
d) Calculate simple indexing for 21, 24 and 70 divisions, using the Browne and Sharpe plates having the following holes circles:
Plate 1 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20Plate 2 21, 23, 27, 29, 31, 33Plate 3 37, 39, 41, 43, 47, 49
