Transfer programme for 6th class students
Mrs Cumiskey’s 6th Class Work Week Beginning 18th May 2020
Welcome to the transfer programme. This is a booklet of worksheets and activities to get you thinking about coming into 1st year. It’s a big move but you will get lots of help and support from all the teachers and staff in your new school. Every year when we do the transfer programme, students tell us that they are a little bit nervous and a little bit excited so this is perfectly normal to have these feelings. Hopefully by the end of this booklet you will be a little bit more prepared for coming to secondary school. And don’t be afraid staff will spend lots of time in the first few weeks helping you all to settle in your new school. Some of the big issues that 6th class students worry about are getting lost, making friends and homework/classwork being too hard. All of these topics will be dealt with later in the workbook.

Homework
Mrs Cumiskey’s 6th Class- Work for week beginning 18th of May 2020
Homework – While no one likes it but it’s just one of those things that you have to do and the more organised you are, the less amount of time you’ll have to spend doing it.
In First Year you may start to get a lot more homework than you have been used to.
To help you do this, you will be given a homework journal where you can write down what you have to do and when it has to be finished by.
Why is homework important?Homework is really important because it shows the teacher whether you understand the work or not. It also means that you can cover more work than the time allowed by a lesson in school.
1. Be organised and have all your homework carefully written in your diary.
2. Check your timetable to see what subjects you have the next day.
3. Do all your homework for the next day first.22
Tips for Homework

paper, table and a quiet room.5. Take small breaks every 45 minutes.6. Keep the area where you study neat and
organised

SCHOOL RULESWhy do we have them? Every school will have some rules for the classroom, corridors and assembly as well as rules about homework, break-times and uniform. You might not like them or even agree with them but they are there to make life easier for everyone in school.
Can you think of the reasons why schools need rules?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Breaking the rules!
There will always be consequences for breaking the rules too. So it’s not only important to know what the rules are but also what will happen if you don’t follow them.
Apologising
If you do break a rule, it is usually a good idea to admit that you got it wrong and to say sorry. It might be useful to practise apologising. It can be hard to keep your cool if you’re being told off. Staying calm is a skill and we need to practice skills to get better at them. Try to remember things will only get worse if you get angry!
